I am excited to be back with Part B in our series asking What If We Were and today we picked a movie. In this section we share our thoughts on Gerald, Debbie and Renee. ChatGPT Picked Grumpy Old Men
When I asked ChatGPT what movie Gerald would be, it picked Grumpy Old Men.
Now, before I even tell you what I thought about that choice, let’s talk about why ChatGPT picked it.
Why ChatGPT Chose Grumpy Old Men for Gerald
ChatGPT connected Gerald to Grumpy Old Men because of the personalities in the movie and the way the characters interact with the people who have known them the longest. The movie isn’t simply about being grumpy.
It’s about strong personalities, stubbornness, humor, getting on each other’s nerves, saying exactly what’s on your mind, and having years of history with the people around you.
The characters can argue. They can irritate each other. They can be set in their ways. They can say things that probably should have stayed inside their heads. But underneath all of that is a relationship built over years. That’s what ChatGPT saw in Gerald.
Glenda’s Thoughts: And the more I thought about it, the more I started thinking about Oscar Madison. If you’ve seen The Odd Couple, you know Oscar and he is messy and he’s not exactly the neatest person in the world when it comes to house cleaning.
He’s got a personality that can change depending on the situation. And sometimes he just says things. Things other people might think but wouldn’t necessarily say out loud. And that is where I started laughing.
Because Gerald can be messy. And he can have that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality where you never quite know which version you’re going to get. And sometimes Gerald just says things.
He doesn’t necessarily stop and think, “Should I say this?”
Sometimes it’s more like: “I’m thinking it, so I might as well say it.” And honestly, that reminds me of Oscar Madison. So while ChatGPT chose Grumpy Old Men, I think it may have accidentally gotten even more specific than it realized.
It wasn’t just the grumpy part. It was the Oscar Madison part that made me think: “Okay, ChatGPT. I see what you did there.” The more I thought about it, the more I agreed with the choice.
Gerald can be messy. He can have that Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde personality. He can say things that I don’t necessarily feel or things that I might think but wouldn’t say. And there are just little things about Oscar Madison that remind me of Gerald.
So yes… I’m going to give ChatGPT this one. Grumpy Old Men actually fits Gerald pretty well. And now I’m curious whether Gerald himself would agree with ChatGPT—or whether he’d have a completely different movie in mind.

What If Debbie Were a Movie? ChatGPT chose Julie & Julia. And this is another choice where I immediately understood the reasoning, even though I’m not completely sure the movie is a perfect match.
Why ChatGPT Chose Julie & Julia for Debbie: ChatGPT connected Debbie to Julie & Julia because of determination, figuring things out as you go, and turning everyday life into something meaningful.
The movie follows someone who takes something ordinary and creates a project out of it. There’s persistence involved. There’s learning involved. There’s figuring things out when you don’t necessarily know exactly what you’re doing. And there’s the idea of taking something in everyday life and making it matter. That’s what ChatGPT saw in Debbie.
What I Think: If I was remembering the right movie this movie is based on cooking and Debbie does cook. And she does bake. But I’m not sure that cooking is the thing that makes me think of Debbie first.
She’s more flowers and other things. So I’m not throwing Julie & Julia out. But I’m also not declaring it perfect. I think I need to watch it again. And maybe when I do, I’ll see something in it that makes me say: “Oh! Now I understand why ChatGPT picked this for Debbie.” So we’re keeping it. For now.

What If Renee Were a Movie: ChatGPT picked The Pursuit of Happiness. And this is another movie I’m adding to my watch list. ChatGPT saw Renee as someone who doesn’t give up.
Someone who continues moving forward when things don’t go according to plan. Someone who keeps trying. Someone who doesn’t let setbacks become the end of the story. And that’s Renee.
Renee is persistent. She is determined. If she decides something needs to get done, she’s going to get it done. Come hell or high water. If one way doesn’t work, she’ll find another way.
She doesn’t simply throw her hands up and say, “Well, I guess that’s not going to happen.” No. She’s going to figure it out. I can definitely see why ChatGPT picked this one. I haven’t decided whether the movie itself is Renee yet because I need to watch it again. But the personality description? That’s Renee to a T. She does not give up.
