I wanted to share Part B: Gerald, Debbie & Renee in our series If My Family Where and this morning were asking ChatGPT if they were a classic tv show. Then I share my thoughts with you and we end up with the Family. Come on back to the front porch and pull up a chair as we share our answers with you.

If My Family Were a Classic TV Show, who would each of us be? If you missed Part A, here’s how we’re playing. I ask ChatGPT a question about one of my family members and let it give me an answer based on the impression it has gotten from the stories, conversations and details I’ve shared.

Then I come back and give ChatGPT my thoughts. Sometimes I agree. Sometimes I don’t. Sometimes ChatGPT gives me an answer that makes me laugh because I never would have thought of that person.

And sometimes its answer makes me look at somebody I have known for years in a completely different way. Then comes the best part: I want to know what YOU think which is the fun part.

Now, I know not everyone uses ChatGPT. That’s okay. This isn’t an advertisement for ChatGPT, and I’m certainly not saying everybody needs to use it. I use it because I think these questions are fun.

I enjoy seeing how ChatGPT sees the people in my life based on the stories I’ve shared. It doesn’t live here. It doesn’t know my family the way I do. It only has the pieces I’ve given it. And sometimes those pieces create a surprisingly good picture. So let’s see what happened when we moved on to Gerald, Debbie and Renee.

Gerald: Who Would He Be? When I think about Gerald, I don’t think of somebody who fits neatly into one little television-character box. He’s family.

He’s got his own personality. His own history and his own way of looking at things. So I asked ChatGPT: “If Gerald were a classic TV character, who would he be?” And ChatGPT’s job was to take everything it knew about him and make its best guess.

The answer was: Andy Taylor from The Andy Griffith Show. And I have to admit, I can see why ChatGPT went there. Andy Taylor was steady. He was loyal. He cared about people. He wasn’t looking for attention.

He was somebody people could depend on. And there was something very down-to-earth about him. But now it’s time for my side of the conversation. Because this is where I get to say whether ChatGPT really understood Gerald.

And I think that’s what makes this challenge so much fun. ChatGPT is looking at Gerald from the stories I’ve shared. I’m looking at Gerald through a lifetime of memories. Those aren’t necessarily the same thing.

My thoughts on Gerald: I see the family member I know. I see the personality behind the name. I see the history that doesn’t always make it into a conversation with ChatGPT. And that’s the part I want you to remember as we go through this series: ChatGPT’s answer isn’t the final answer. It’s the beginning of the conversation.

So, Reader, What Do You Think? If Gerald were a classic television character, who would you choose? Would you agree with ChatGPT? Would you choose Andy Taylor? Or does Gerald remind you of somebody completely different? Tell me. Because I want to see whether you see Gerald the way ChatGPT sees Gerald—or the way I see Gerald.

Debbie: Who Would She Be? And Debbie is another person where personality matters. So I asked ChatGPT: “If Debbie were a classic TV character, who would she be?” And ChatGPT chose: Dorothy Zbornak from The Golden Girls.

Now, I have to admit, Dorothy is a pretty strong character to compare somebody to. She is smart, direct and practical. Independent and she is definitely not afraid to say what she thinks. If Dorothy thinks something is ridiculous, you are probably going to know about it.

And I can see why ChatGPT made that connection with Debbie. But this is where I get to add the things ChatGPT can’t necessarily know. Because when you’re talking about family, you aren’t just talking about personality.

You’re talking about memories and you’re talking about the things you’ve been through together. You’re talking about the little things that make you recognize somebody before they even say anything and you’re talking about the person behind the character.

My thoughts on Debbie; There are parts of Dorothy that make sense but there are also parts of Debbie that don’t fit neatly into Dorothy—or any other television character. And that’s okay.

That’s actually the point. We’re not trying to force people into boxes. We’re asking: “If we had to cast you, who would you be?” And then we’re laughing, remembering and telling stories along the way.

What Do YOU Think About Debbie? If Debbie were a classic TV character, who would you choose? Would she be Dorothy or someone else from The Golden Girls? Or a completely different television character? Maybe you’ve met Debbie and have your own answer. I want to hear it.

Renee: And now it gets interesting if you’ve been following along with my family stories, you know that Renee is another person who has become part of the bigger picture of our lives.

So I asked ChatGPT: “If Renee were a classic TV character, who would she be?” ChatGPT chose: Mary Richards from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. And I actually liked this one. Mary Richards represented independence.

Work, determination. and friendship. And figuring out how to navigate life while still being herself. She was surrounded by people with strong personalities, but she had her own identity.

And that is what made the comparison interesting to me. Renee isn’t simply somebody who exists in somebody else’s story. She has her own story. Her own personality and her own way of doing things. And that’s what makes these character comparisons so much fun.

But Here’s What ChatGPT Can’t Know; This is something I’ve been thinking about throughout this whole challenge. ChatGPT can only see the pieces of people that I have shared.

It doesn’t know the conversations that happened when nobody was listening. It doesn’t know the inside jokes. It doesn’t know the childhood memories that never made it into one of my stories.

It doesn’t know the look somebody gives me across a room. It doesn’t know the things we’ve laughed about for years. It doesn’t know every chapter. It sees the pieces I’ve handed it.

And then it tries to put those pieces together. Sometimes it surprises me. Sometimes it makes me laugh. And sometimes I say: “Nope. You missed that one!” But that’s okay. Because I’m not using ChatGPT to tell me who my family is.

I’m using it to start a conversation about who they might be. And that’s a big difference. Now I Want Your Answers This is where I hand the conversation over to you. If Gerald were a classic TV character, who would he be? If Debbie were a classic TV character, who would she be? If Renee were a classic TV character, who would she be?

And here’s the fun part: You don’t have to agree with ChatGPT. You don’t even have to agree with me. That’s the entire point. Maybe you know somebody in my family and think ChatGPT got it completely wrong.

Maybe you’ve never met them and you’re going purely on the stories I’ve shared. Maybe you have a completely different character in mind. Tell me. I want to know how my readers see my family. Because sometimes the people sitting outside the story can see something the person telling the story doesn’t.

And That’s Why I’m Asking I know some people don’t use ChatGPT. I understand that. This isn’t about whether you use it or don’t use it. For me, it’s simply another way to have fun with the stories and people in my life.

I ask: “If Gerald were…?” “If Debbie were…?” “If Renee were…?” And ChatGPT gives me its impression. Then I say: “Okay, here’s what YOU don’t know.” And then we have a conversation.

That’s what I love about this. It’s not a test. It’s not scientific. Which is why this makes a fun #homeschool project. It’s not supposed to be perfect. It’s just fun. And sometimes, when you’re willing to look at your family from a completely different angle, you discover something new about people you’ve known forever.
