The $6 Pork Chop Adventure: When Dinner Plans Change

As much as I hate to admit it but in my house in the morning Gerald and I will take out what I think were going to have for dinner. Then more times than not the dinner plans become

Sometimes David will call from work and say: “I don’t feel good. Let’s just pick up dinner tonight.” And there goes mine and Gerald’s dinner plan! That’s exactly what happened with when I had plans to broil pork chops.

I had picked up a $6 package of bone-in pork chops at Kroger, and there were five pork chops in the package. Five pork chops. Five people. That sounds like a pretty easy dinner plan to me.

One pork chop per person. Yes, the men grumbled because there was only one a piece but life goes on. Once dinner was finished if they were still hungry they could make a sandwich because we live in a budget and I’m trying to stretch the groceries we have.

“One pork chop is enough when I’m watching what we’re eating. Because both David and I need to lose some weight. One pork chop, some vegetables, and a good side dish can make a perfectly good dinner.

We don’t have to put two or three pieces of meat on everybody’s plate just because we’re used to doing it that way. We’re trying to stretch our groceries and our dollars and to lose weight..

I took the pork chops out because I wanted to broil them because I love broiled pork chops. David? He isn’t to crazy about broiled pork chops and who knows about Charlie and Gerald.

So I already knew there was a good possibility that my broiled-pork-chop dream wasn’t going to happen. Then I realized I didn’t even have everything I needed to get dinner going. So there went Plan A.

And then David called. “Oh man, I don’t feel good. I think we’ll just pick up dinner tonight.” And I’m thinking: “I don’t have any money.” And David says: “It’s okay. I got it covered.” Of course he did.

Because apparently my husband still thinks he’s SUPERMAN. Lord have mercy. The man thinks he can take care of everything. And one of these days, come hell or high water, he’s going to discover that he is not Superman. But until then, I guess I’ll let him think he is Superman and he can save the world.

And that’s how one package of $6 pork chops sitting in my refrigerator somehow turned into: a trip with Charlie to get dinner for my family because David didn’t feel like stopping and picking up food.

I got dressed and we got into the car to go to Cannes for Charlie’s dinner. Before we went there we stopped at Walmart with Charlie to look at pink hair dye. A trip to Chick Fil A got cancelled and Charlie and I had Cane’s for dinner.

Then it was off to Buffalo Wild Wings on Denton Highway for Gerald and David Wings & Fries for dinner. Giving me a whole lot of extra time with Charlie. And honestly? I’m not even mad about it.

Because that little adventure with Charlie was a godsend. I got extra one-on-one time with my son. We rode around. We listened to music. We talked. We laughed. We looked at hair dye.

We didn’t buy the hair dye because Charlie left his wallet in the car. And we ended up bringing dinner home for everybody. For me the plans that get messed up turn into some of the best memories and that is what happend.

The Pork Chops was still in the Icebox and David called and asked: “Aare the pork chops in the icebox?” Yep. They’re right there. And then he said: “I’ll make them when I get home.” That was perfectly fine with me because I didn’t want to cook.

Before you ask if the pork chops were broiled like I wanted no, David decided he was going to cook them on the grill. And you know what? I’m not going to fuss. Because there’s actually a pretty good reason I’m okay with it.

Those bone-in pork chops should be really good on the grill. And grilling them reminds me of Suzanne, because grilled pork chops were one of her favorite ways to eat pork chops. So maybe tonight’s dinner will be a little bit more than just dinner. Maybe it’ll be one of those meals that brings back a memory. And I’m okay with that.

Now let’s get one thing straight. David may be cooking the pork chops. But I’m getting my English peas. And I may or may not cream them the way my grandmother used to. I’m still deciding.

Because sometimes you want vegetables. And sometimes you want vegetables using Grandma’s vegetable recipe. There’s a difference. And then we’re going to have three-cheese macaroni and cheese.

Now, I’m going to save the actual product review for later because I need to go downstairs and get the brand and all the information. And right now? I’m just too darn lazy to climb down those stairs. 😂 I’ll get there eventually.

So Tonight’s Dinner Is Coming Together. We’ve got: Bone-in grilled pork chops. One porck chop apiece. English peas which only I will be eating and Three-cheese macaroni and cheese.

And one package of $6 Kroger pork chops is going to feed five people and I found them on clearance for $6. That was a Godwin. That’s the kind of grocery math I like. How about you?

One package. Five servings. A family dinner. And hopefully some leftover three chesse mac and cheese—or at least enough food to make everybody feel satisfied. And once we actually cook everything, I’ll come back and do the full review.

We’ll talk about the pork chops. We’ll talk about how they turned out on the grill. We’ll talk about the peas. We’ll talk about whether I creamed them. And we’ll talk about that three-cheese mac and cheese once I finally get myself downstairs to look at the package. 😂

Because this isn’t just a food review. It’s another one of our real-life family dinner adventures. Sometimes dinner starts with a $6 package of pork chops. Then plans change because someone wants something different.

Or David decides he’s Superman. Then Mom and Charlie go looking for pink hair dye. Then we end up at Cane’s and Buffalo Wild Wings. And finally, somehow… we end up right back where we started—with those pork chops. And honestly? That’s just life around here.

Stay tuned for Part Two: What Those $6 Pork Chops Actually Tasted Like. 🥩

Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
