As we were driving to Oklahoma this morning to check on my brothers house I begin to think about what all I needed to do on the blog when we got home. One thing that I knew I needed to do was share a new question in my what if my family were series.
As we drove along I decided todays’ question in our What If My Family Were a Classic TV Show? I choose this question because anyone who knows me knows I love movies and tv shows especially classic shows I grew up with.
That I’ve been luck to share with Charlie and David. Which is why I wanted to as this question this afternoon. Remember there are some families that probably look pretty normal from the outside. And then there’s mine.
If you’ve been around Greatful Moments for any amount of time, you already know that my family has never been short on personalities, stories, opinions, laughter, memories, adventures and, occasionally, a little bit of chaos.
We have the people who love to tell stories, the people who love to fix things, the people who save every penny, the people who speak their minds, and the people who would probably rather be doing something completely different from whatever everyone else is doing.
And then, of course, we have the dogs and our friends and family. Because no family story of mine would ever be complete without them. Over the years, I’ve discovered that one of the things I love most about my family is that everybody is different.
We don’t all think alike. We don’t all act alike. And we certainly don’t all see things the same way. But those differences are what make our family stories so much fun to tell. Welcome Back to My “What If I Were…?” Series
I would like to welcome you back to our “What If I Were…?” series, based on a question that we asked ChatGPT. The idea is simple. I ask ChatGPT what it thinks about me or my family based on all the times we’ve worked together and all the stories, conversations and little pieces of our lives that I’ve shared.
Then ChatGPT gives me its answer. After that, I give you my thoughts. I tell ChatGPT what it got right, what it got wrong and, most importantly, the things about my family that only somebody who actually knows us would know.
And then I want to ask you: Do you think ChatGPT got the right answer? You don’t have to use ChatGPT yourself. I know plenty of people don’t, and that’s perfectly okay. I use it because I think these questions are fun.
I love seeing how ChatGPT sees my family based on the things I’ve shared with it over time. Sometimes it surprises me. Sometimes it makes me laugh. Sometimes I think, “How in the world did you come up with THAT?”
And sometimes it gets remarkably close. So come join me. Grab your favorite beverage, pull up a chair, and let’s sit on the front porch together while we discuss what my family would look like if we were characters in a classic television show.
And we’re going to start with David, then it will share thoughts on me, then Charlie and Suzzaane. Then we move onto Gerald, Debbie and Renee. Then the dogs Bear, Pheobie, Sandy and Gunner and we end with my whole family.
David: I asked ChatGPT: “If David were a classic television character, who would he be?” And ChatGPT chose… Mike Brady from The Brady Bunch. He was a dad. He was a family man. He cared about his family. He was dependable.
But when ChatGPT gave me that answer, I had to laugh. Because I wouldn’t have thought of Mike Brady either. My answer was completely different. I said David was Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor. And I didn’t pick Tim Taylor just because he likes tools.
Although… David REALLY likes tools. If David could have a garage filled with tools, cars and projects, I honestly believe he’d think he’d died and gone to heaven.
But that’s only the beginning. David is a hardworking, kind, caring and loving dad. He loves his family. He loves working on cars. And cars aren’t just a hobby for David. He grew up working on cars with his dad.
So when I think about David working on cars, I also think about his dad and the memories they made together. Then there’s the backyard. I can absolutely see David standing outside barbecuing and talking to anybody who happens to come along.
David likes making friends. I can see him meeting the neighbor over the fence. They’re talking about cars. Or tools. Or barbecue. Or whatever else happens to come up. And before long, they’re laughing and probably sharing a beer or two. That’s David.
That’s why Tim Taylor was my answer. Not because David is exactly Tim Taylor. But because I see so many pieces of David in him. The hardworking dad. The loving family man.
The car guy. The tool guy. The guy who would love his own garage. The guy who learned from his dad The backyard barbecue guy. The guy who makes friends wherever he goes. And the guy who loves his family. So ChatGPT started with Mike Brady. I said Tim Taylor. And after I explained my reasoning, ChatGPT agreed. I’m going to call that one a win.

Now It’s My Turn and I asked ChatGPT: “If Glenda were a classic television character, who would she be?” And ChatGPT chose: Clair Huxtable from The Cosby Show. And I have to admit…
I had to think about it for a minute but after thinking about it I could see it. The Cosby Show was one of my favorite shows growing up. I loved Cliff Huxtable. I loved Theo. And Clair was funny, loving, outspoken, practical and capable.
She could look at a situation and basically say: “Okay. Stop. We’re going to figure this out.” I like that. She was also a lawyer. She was intelligent. She was empowered. She was a woman’s woman.
She took nothing off anybody. And she loved her family. So I understood why ChatGPT chose her. But I don’t know that I would have picked Clair for myself. And that’s where this conversation got interesting.
Because once ChatGPT said Clair Huxtable, I started thinking about all the other women from classic television shows that I could see pieces of myself in. I immediately thought about Alice Hyatt from Alice.
Now, there’s a woman I understand. Alice was hardworking. Funny. Independent. Down-home. And she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. There is definitely a little bit of “Kiss my grits!” in me.
But Alice also reminded me of something from my own life. At one point, I actually wanted to run a little restaurant. I thought it would be fun to share my down-home recipes with my customers.
Cook for people. Talk to people. Get to know people. Instead, I ended up in advertising. And blogging. And writing. And sharing stories. So maybe I didn’t get as far away from that dream as I thought.
I just created a different kind of restaurant. Instead of serving people food… I’m serving people stories. And Then There’s Flo Of course, if we’re talking about Alice, we have to talk about Flo.
That redheaded waitress who loved every man she came into contact with. Now let me just say: That part is NOT me. But I love Flo. She was funny. She was bold. She had personality. She wasn’t afraid to say what she thought. And sometimes you don’t have to be exactly like a character to love them. Flo is just one of those characters who makes me smile.
Then We Get to The Golden Girls And that’s when I realized something. I might not be just one character. I might be… The whole kit and caboodle of different shows all wrapped up in one package.
Let’s start with Sophia. Oh, I can see Sophia. Especially when it comes to storytelling. Because I can tell a story. And if that story needs to go all the way back to Sicily? That’s perfectly fine with me.
We may start talking about something that happened yesterday, but before we’re finished, we’re going to know what happened twenty years ago, who was there, what somebody said, what somebody’s cousin did and probably what happened in Sicily. That’s Sophia. And I love her for it.
Dorothy Is in There Too And this one makes sense because I was a school teacher. Dorothy was smart. Practical. Direct. Funny. And she wasn’t afraid to tell somebody when they were being ridiculous. I understand that. There’s a little Dorothy in me that says: “Okay, everybody. Let’s get this straight.”
And Then There’s Rose who was sentimental. Imaginative. Unexpected. And she always had a story. That sounds familiar. Something ordinary happens in my life, and I don’t necessarily leave it ordinary.
A family moment becomes a story. A recipe becomes a memory. A memory becomes an article. A conversation becomes an idea. That’s my Rose side. So Which One Am I? Why?
And that’s when I realized why I couldn’t settle on one answer. Maybe ChatGPT was right about Clair she is my strength. But Alice is my hardworking, down-home side. Dorothy is my teacher side. Sophia is my storyteller. Rose is my heart and imagination. And Flo? Well… Flo is there because I love Flo.
So maybe I’m not one television character at all. Maybe when God created me, He broke the mold. And then he decided to add a whole bunch of different characters to my life. I could probably name fifty more that would fit some part of me.
And you know what? That’s okay. Because people aren’t supposed to fit neatly into one little box. We’re made up of layers. Stories. Memories. Experiences. Dreams. Heartbreaks. Laughter. Love. And the people we’ve met along the way.
Charlie: Then we got to Charlie. I asked ChatGPT: “What classic television character would Charlie be?” And the answer was: Alex P. Keaton from Family Ties. I laughed. and so did Charlie and David.
But then I started thinking about it. And I thought: You know what? I can actually see this. Alex P. Keaton loved money. Charlie loves money. In fact, Charlie can squeeze a penny tighter than anybody I know.
Alex did things his own way. Charlie does things his own way. Alex had his own thoughts. Charlie definitely has his own thoughts. Alex was serious. Charlie can be very serious about the things that matter to him.
And then there’s the Richard Nixon obsession. Alex P. Keaton was obsessed with Richard Nixon. Charlie? Not exactly a politics guy. So that part doesn’t fit. But there are other similarities.
Alex had his own way of looking at the world. He wasn’t interested in simply following everybody else. Charlie is very much his own person. Alex loved his little brother. Charlie loves little kids.
Alex had his own experiences with young love that didn’t always work out. Charlie has had some of those experiences too. So while Alex P. Keaton wasn’t the character I would have immediately chosen for Charlie, once ChatGPT explained its reasoning… I could see it.
Do you think ChatGPT chose the right character for Charlie?
Suzanne: When it came time to ask ChatGPT about Suzanne, I was really curious about what it would say. Suzanne was such a special part of our family, and because she isn’t here for me to ask what she thinks about these comparisons, I wanted to see what ChatGPT would come up with based on all the stories and memories I’ve shared about her.
So I asked: “If Suzanne were a classic television character, who would she be?” And ChatGPT chose: Marilyn Munster from The Munsters. Now, I have to admit, that was not the answer I would have expected. But ChatGPT’s reasoning was actually pretty interesting.
It saw Marilyn Munster as someone who had her own special place in a family filled with very strong and unusual personalities. Marilyn was surrounded by the wonderfully eccentric Munsters, yet she had her own identity.
She was feminine. Warm. Sweet. Gentle. And there was something about her appearance and her classic beauty that made ChatGPT connect her with Suzanne. ChatGPT also saw Suzanne as someone who had a distinctive personality of her own rather than simply blending into the background.
And that made me stop and think. Because when you are talking about somebody you have known and loved your entire life, you sometimes forget just how much personality that person carried with them. So now it was my turn.
My Thoughts on Suzanne: When ChatGPT said Marilyn Munster, my first thought was: “The Munsters?” I never would have thought of that. But then I started thinking about Suzanne. And suddenly, I could kind of see it.
Now, when I hear the name Marilyn, my mind immediately goes to Marilyn Monroe but in a way Marylin from The Munsters is just like Marlyn Monroe with her classic beauty. The beautiful outfits. The glamour. The fashion. The feminine style. That little bit of “ooh-la-la.”
And Suzanne loved those things. Suzanne always loved to dress fashionably. She loved French things. She had that feminine side that could absolutely appreciate something beautiful, romantic and a little bit glamorous.
And then there’s her hair. Suzanne had beautiful brown hair, and I can see how ChatGPT made that connection with Marilyn Munster’s beautiful black hair. So while I would have never thought of Marlyn from The Munsters for Suzanne on my own, once ChatGPT explained its reasoning, I started seeing the connection.
And then something else occurred to me that made the whole thing even more special. The Munsters was one of David and Charlie’s favorite shows. And Suzanne grew up watching The Munsters right alongside me.
So here we have ChatGPT choosing a character from a television show that was already part of our family’s memories. That makes me smile. Would I have chosen Marilyn Munster for Suzanne if ChatGPT hadn’t suggested her? Probably not.
But now? I can absolutely see why ChatGPT chose her. And isn’t that what makes these questions so much fun? Sometimes ChatGPT gives me an answer and I immediately think: “Nope. You got that one wrong.”
And sometimes it gives me an answer that I never would have considered, and after I think about it, I say: “You know what? I can see it.” That’s what happened with Suzanne. ChatGPT made me look at a piece of Suzanne’s personality from an entirely different angle.
And because Suzanne was part of our family, the connection to The Munsters makes it even sweeter. She wasn’t just a character somebody picked out of a hat. She was a girl who actually watched that show with us. She was part of those memories.
And that’s something ChatGPT couldn’t possibly know unless I had shared it. Which brings us right back to why I’m doing this series in the first place. ChatGPT sees the pieces of my family that I’ve shared with it. I bring the memories. And together, we get to have a conversation about the people we love.
Now It’s Your Turn– So, dear reader, what do you think? If Suzanne were a classic television character, would you have chosen Marilyn Munster? Maybe you knew Suzanne and immediately thought of somebody else.
Maybe you didn’t know her personally, but you’ve heard my stories about her and have another character in mind. Maybe you see her as someone glamorous. Maybe you see her as funny.
Maybe you see a character from a completely different classic television show. Tell me who you would have chosen and why. Because that’s the part I really want to know. ChatGPT gave me its answer. I gave you my Suzanne.
Now I want to know: Who do YOU think Suzanne would have been? And that’s exactly why I enjoy these questions. Sometimes the answer makes you laugh. Sometimes you disagree. And sometimes somebody gives you an answer that makes you look at someone you have known forever from a completely different angle.

That’s the fun of this series. ChatGPT gives me its impression. I give you my real-life thoughts. And then you get to be the reader who decides. So grab your beverage, pull your chair a little closer, and stay awhile.
Because this family has a whole lot more television casting to do. And trust me… We haven’t even gotten to the dogs yet. Or my family David and Debbie or my friend Renee or our entire family.
A Little Dolly Before We Go-And because I can’t tell this story today without thinking about Dolly Parton, I have to leave you with this. Dolly was 80 years old when she died, and learning that she had been battling cancer was something that truly surprised me.
I didn’t even realize she was sick. That stopped me in my tracks. And maybe that’s because I’ve learned through life that we don’t always know what somebody else is carrying. People can be working. Creating. Laughing. Giving. Loving.
And fighting battles we know nothing about. That’s one of the things I admire about Dolly. She kept going. She kept creating. She kept dreaming. She kept giving. And when I think about my own life, I know exactly what I want.
I want to make it to 80. And when I get there, I want to go out of this world kicking and screaming. Not because I want to be afraid of death. Because I don’t want to be finished living.
I want to still have something to say. Something to write. Something to create. Somebody to love. Somebody to laugh with. Somewhere to go. Something to look forward to. I want to be able to look back and say:
“Well, I sure lived.” And maybe that’s really what these “What If I Were…?” questions are about. They’re silly. They’re fun. They make me laugh. But they also make me think about the people we become, the people we love and the stories we collect along the way. So come sit with me again. The front porch is always open.
