I am excited to share another post in our series where we ask you a What If question. This morning What If I Was a Soda Pop? Part B: The Extended Family. If you thought Part A was interesting, we’re not done yet! Buttercup.
As you know in Part A, we asked ChatGPT what soda pop it thought David, Glenda, Charlie, and Suzanne would be. Some of ChatGPT’s answers were exactly what I would have chosen.
Others made me scratch my head and say, “Really?” And then there were the ones where, after ChatGPT explained its reasoning, I thought, “Okay… I can actually see that.” Now we’re moving on to Part B: the extended family.
This time we’re talking about Gerald, Debbie, and Renee. And once again, I asked ChatGPT to make the difficult decisions for me. So let’s see what it came up with. Then I will share my thoughts with you then it’s your turn to let me know if ChatGPT go it right. Or I did or if there is something else you would have chosen.
Gerald — ChatGPT chose Dr Pepper Zero Sugar for Gerald. Now, the first thing I have to tell you is this: Gerald won’t even drink Dr Pepper! Gerald is 100% Coke even though Dr. Pepper was my mom’s favorite Soda.
But when ChatGPT explained its reasoning, I could actually see where it was coming from. Dr Pepper has a whole bunch of different flavors blended together, and Gerald has always had a whole lot going on inside him, too.
Back when he could see, he was always doing something and had a lot of different interests and things happening around him. These days he’s much quieter and more likely to stay to himself.
He’s familiar. He’s dependable. And he’s kind of like a big teddy bear. But don’t let that teddy-bear description fool you. There is definitely an independent streak in Gerald. Don’t cross him, because you’re probably not going to like what happens next.
He’s not necessarily someone who wants to talk all the time. He tends to stay to himself and keep things inside. So why Dr Pepper Zero Sugar? My mom loved Dr Pepper. When she was doing Weight Watchers, she would drink Diet Dr Pepper. And Gerald and my mom were extremely close.
So even though Gerald himself would probably look at that can of Dr Pepper Zero Sugar and say, “No, thank you. Give me my Coke,” I can understand why ChatGPT connected him with Dr Pepper. Maybe it wasn’t just thinking about Gerald. Maybe it was seeing a little bit of the connection between Gerald and Mom. And that makes me smile.
Glenda’s Thoughts– If I were choosing Gerald’s soda, there is no question: Coke. That’s what I would choose. But I have to admit, after hearing ChatGPT’s reasoning, I can see why it picked Dr Pepper Zero Sugar.
It’s got all those different flavors going on at once. And that’s Gerald. Quiet? Yes. Dependable? Absolutely. A teddy bear? Most of the time. But independent? Oh, definitely. And maybe there’s a little bit of Mom mixed into that Dr Pepper choice, too.

Debbie — ChatGPT chose Diet Coke. And this one actually makes a lot of sense. Diet Coke is steady, straightforward, and classic. It has been around for a long time, and it has developed a personality all its own.
And that’s Debbie. Growing up, all Debbie really wanted was Classic Coke. She wasn’t much of a Dr Pepper drinker, so Coke has always been more her style. These days, Diet Coke is the soda that fits into her life.
But there’s another reason the personality fits. Diet Coke is different from Classic Coke. Classic Coke is bold and bright. Diet Coke is a little quieter. And Debbie? She’s definitely the quieter one.
But don’t mistake quiet for predictable. Debbie can go from calm to “Oh, my goodness!” in the blink of an eye. She has a personality all her own. She’s steady. She’s straightforward. She’s classic. But she is also very much Debbie. And just like Diet Coke isn’t Classic Coke, Debbie isn’t anyone else in the family. She’s her own flavor.
Glenda’s Thoughts– I think ChatGPT got this one right. Diet Coke is Debbie. Growing up, she wanted Classic Coke. But today, Diet Coke fits her. It’s familiar, but it’s different. It’s quieter than Classic Coke, but it still has plenty of personality. And that describes Debbie pretty well. So I’m going to give ChatGPT this one. Good choice.

Renee — ChatGPT’s Choice: Sprite– It said Renee feels like Sprite because she’s refreshing, energetic, and brings a completely different flavor to the family. Sprite isn’t trying to be Coca-Cola.
It isn’t trying to be Dr Pepper. It knows exactly what it is. And that feels like Renee. She’s her own person. She has her own personality. She has her own way of doing things. And she definitely brings a different flavor to this family.
Glenda’s Thoughts– I can see the Sprite choice. But if you ask me? Renee is ginger ale. And yes, I’m going to argue that ginger ale counts as a soda pop. It is in the pop aisle! Therefore, I am counting it. Buttercup…
Ginger ale is bubbly. It’s fun. It’s got personality. And it has a taste that is completely its own. It doesn’t need to be Coca-Cola. It doesn’t need to be Dr Pepper. It kind of hangs out over on its own little side of the soda aisle.
And that’s Renee. Sometimes you look at Renee and think, “Okay… what are we getting today?” And then tomorrow you look at her and think, “Okay… what are we getting today?” Because with Renee, never two days are the same.
One day you know exactly what you’re getting. The next day? Surprise! And that’s why I think ginger ale is a better fit. It’s bubbly. It’s unpredictable. It’s a little different. And it stays in its own lane. Just like Renee. Renee is ginger ale, buttercup even if it isn’t a Soda.

And once again, I have to say that this is exactly why I love asking ChatGPT these silly questions. Sometimes it gives me the answer I expected. Sometimes it gives me an answer I would never have thought of.
And sometimes it gives me an answer that makes me laugh at first and then makes me realize, “Wait a minute… that actually makes sense.” But we’re not finished turning the Cates family into a soda aisle.
We’ve covered the immediate family. We’ve covered the extended family. Now it’s time for the members of the family who don’t get to argue with me about their soda choices. Because they can’t talk. At least not in words. Although, at times Bear and Pheobie do.
