Life is funny more and more I keep hearing Barbara from a videographer I listen to on Facebook. Then when I’m talking I hear myself saying Barbara and I don’t want to get into trouble for using someone else saying even though everyone uses Karen.
I’ve decided the Cate family needs there own saying. After much discussion I’ve come up with Well, Buttercup… and you will hear it everywhere including when I tell you to Pull Up a Chair, Because I Got Some Stories to Share
Thanks Facebook for giving me something else I didn’t need. LOL. This what happens when I begin watching people on Facebook that I never thought I would sit down and watch. Some are doing podcasts.
Some of the are cooking and sometimes I find recipes my family will actually eat. Some are traveling with their families and I see places I never heard of or learn traveling tips. Some are just telling stories about their everyday lives. And somehow, I’ve ended up following all of them.
There’s the woman who lives in a camper trailer with her family and travels with her husband while he works. There’s the woman who cooks. There’s the woman from Applesauce and her mom. There’s Misha, who just stands out because, well… she’s Misha.
Then there’s Manny and Barabra and he is funny, Then there is Rat Nation, the Army guy, a couple singers and a whole collection of people whose names I may or may not remember correctly.
But I wanted to share Manny with you this morning. Even Charlie will listen to him with me at times. Manny has a word. “BARBARA” and that word is used in so many ways I wouldn’t even have thought of.
I don’t know how or why he came up with Barbara and I don’t know why that particular word stuck in my head, but it did. The more I watched, the more I started hearing myself use it.
And then one day I thought, Wait a minute. I don’t want to copy Manny. I want to be me. I want something that sounds like Greatful Moments. Something that sounds like sitting on the front porch, pulling up a chair, and telling somebody what happened today.
And then it hit me. My word would be Buttercup. Not, honey, sweetie pie or dear it would be Buttercup. Well, Buttercup you should pull up a chair because I got lots of stories to share with you today.
Before you start wondering where Buttercup came from, let me explain. Sometimes you see something happen and you don’t have time to explain the whole story. Sometimes somebody does something that makes you shake your head.
Sometimes your husband comes home from Dollar Tree with chips for your brother, Takis for your son, a glass for you, and pork skins—and then puts the pork skins in a Ziploc bag because he knows you aren’t going to eat the whole bag at once.
Sometimes your son wakes you up at five o’clock in the morning because he wants to go get a drink, and instead of telling him to go back to bed, you get up and go with him. Sometimes you end up at Aldi because you need milk, bread, food and gravy mix or there isn’t going to be a roast for dinner.
Sometimes you’re headed to Whataburger and your son suddenly remembers that his mom really prefers a sit-down breakfast and says, “Mom, what about Blue Mound Cafe?” That is Love and it deserves a Well, Buttercup thank you, I love you.
And sometimes you simply sit across from your son, don’t take the perfect picture, don’t photograph the food, don’t worry about creating content, and just enjoy being together. Those are the stories I want to tell.
And sometimes, Lordy, Lordy, have mercy… I don’t have the words. That’s when Buttercup comes in. Because I am not going to sit around blessing everybody’s heart. We all know that “bless your heart” can mean something entirely different depending on how a Southern woman says it.
So instead, around here, we’re going to say: “Well, Buttercup…” And if I say that, you might want to pull up a chair. Because I’ve probably got a story. Maybe it’s funny. Maybe it’s sweet.
Maybe it’s one of those days when everything went sideways. Maybe it’s about Charlie. Maybe it’s about David. Maybe it’s about one of these crazy dogs. Or Buttercup it might actually be about myself.
Or it might be something that happened while I was grocery shopping. Maybe it’s something that made me laugh when I really needed to laugh. And maybe, every once in a while, it’s one of those little moments that reminds me just how blessed I really am.
Because that’s what Greatful Moments has always been about. Not just the big moments. The little ones. The ordinary ones. The moments that happen when nobody is taking pictures and nobody is trying to make a memory. The moments that you almost miss because you’re too busy living them.
So no, there won’t be a Barbara here. There won’t be a Karen. There won’t be you got some plainin to do which is what David say’s from I Love Lucy. There won’t be somebody else’s catchphrase.
There will just be me. And my Buttercup. So the next time you see me show up with a story and I start with… “Well, Buttercup…” You already know what to do. Pull up a chair. Because I got some stories to share. And Lordy, Lordy… you never know what we’re going to talk about next on GreatfulMoments.com
Grateful, Thankful, Blessed.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
