The Day I Lost 20 Blog Posts: Why Every Creator Needs a Backup Plan

With David’s dad being in the hospital and passing away and trying to move and set up the new blog I sat down the other day and published 20 post which should have been published once we finished the move. Everyone of those post got lost. I wanted to remind you sometimes the lessons we need the most are the ones we never expected to learn. Recently, I learned one of those lessons the hard way.

After moving everything over to Greatful Moments, I discovered that approximately 20 of my blog posts were missing. These were not just random posts. They were important pieces of my work — core articles, reviews, and content that I had spent countless hours creating. At first, I felt overwhelmed.

As a creator, our words are more than just words on a screen. They are our experiences, our ideas, our memories, and the time we’ve invested into helping someone else. When those things disappear, it feels like losing a piece of our story. But as I looked at the situation, I realized something important.

This was a reminder to slow down, pay attention, and make sure I was protecting the work I had created. Because the truth is, no matter how long you’ve been blogging, no matter how much experience you have, things can happen. Websites can have issues. Hosting can have problems. Migrations can lose information. Technology is wonderful, but technology is not perfect. That is why every creator needs a backup plan and you can bet your bottom dollar I will be working on one.

What Every Blogger Should Protect

Our blog is more than our published posts. There are many pieces that make up our online home.

Make sure you have backups of:

  • Blog posts and drafts
  • Photos and images
  • Printable files
  • Recipes and original content
  • Affiliate information
  • Important documents
  • Branding files
  • Logos and graphics
  • Email lists
  • Social media content

Your content represents your time, creativity, and experience. Protect it.

Ways to Create a Backup System

You do not have to be a technology expert to protect your work. Start with simple steps.

1. Keep a Copy Outside Your Website: Do not store everything only inside your website dashboard. Save important content somewhere else:

  • External hard drive
  • Cloud storage
  • Computer folders
  • Backup services
  • A notebook

The goal is to have another copy if something happens.

2. Organize Your Content

One thing I’ve learned during this process is that organization matters.

Create folders for:

  • Published articles
  • Drafts
  • Printables
  • Photos
  • Reviews
  • Recipes
  • Seasonal content

A little organization today can save a lot of stress later.

3. Back Up Regularly: Do not wait until there is a problem.

Create a routine:

  • Weekly backups for active sites
  • Monthly checks for older content
  • Before major changes or migrations

4. Save Your Favorite Content: Some posts are more than articles. They are memories. They are milestones. They are pieces of your story.

Save the posts that represent:

  • your family
  • your journey
  • your biggest lessons
  • your most helpful resources

This Is The Lesson I’m Taking Forward– While losing posts was frustrating, it also gave me an opportunity to look at Greatful Moments differently. This website is not just a collection of reviews. It is my story. It is my family. It is the recipes we share. It is the memories we hold onto. It is the lessons learned along the way.

And moving forward, I want to build with more intention. I want to slow down. I want to organize. I want to protect the work I create. Because our stories matter. This is why I plan on learning one new thing a day regarding my blog so I can do things on my own and not lose important post and pay someone when I can do these things on my own.

If your a blogger, a small business owner, a recipe creator, or someone documenting your family memories, do not assume your work is automatically safe. Take the time to protect it. One backup at a time. if you don’t know how ask someone for help because the only stupid question is the unasked question.
