DALLAS CHILDREN’S THEATER COLLABORATION SEEKS PLAYWRIGHT FOR NEW WORK BASED ON A POEM BY MAYA ANGELOU (Dallas, TX) Dallas Children’s Theater (DCT), Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, Children’s Theatre of Madison and The Rose Theater in Omaha seek a playwright with meaningful experience working directly with youth to create a new work inspired by Life Doesn’t Frighten Me by Maya Angelou. We intend this new work to serve ages 4-8. We envision collecting and utilizing the stories and ideas of youth living in each of our Cities to inform a play with music. Black History Month celebrates Maya Angelou BIRTH DATE April 4, 1928 DEATH May 28, 2014 Civil Rights Activist Poet Author known for her acclaimed 1969 memoir, ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,’ along with Poetry and Essay Collections. ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings the first nonfiction bestseller by an African American woman Honors Maya received: Two NAACP Image Awards in the outstanding literary work (nonfiction) category, in 2005 and 2009. Maya Angelou parents spilt up and she was sent to live with her fathers mother. At the age of 7 she was Raped by mother’s boyfriend. As vengeance for the sexual assault, Angelou’s uncles killed the boyfriend.…
