Questions That Make Us Go Huh? Day 4 How Many Pairs of Pajamas Is Too Many?

Welcome back to another Coffee or Sweet Tea Conversation From My Front Porch — Questions That Make Us Go Hmmm… Yesterday we started with a very important question: Are you a coffee person or a sweet tea person? ☕🍹You can check out my families answer to yesterday’s question here.

Today, we are talking about something a little cozier… Pajamas. So here is today’s question: How many pairs of pajamas does one person really need? And while we are asking that… Do pajamas belong only in the house, or are they acceptable outside the front door? Why do you feel this way?

Now, let me tell you a little story. But before I do I wanted to let you know this question is brought to you in memory of Suzzane who loved her Flip Flops and PJs. Back in the day, my daughter practically lived in pajama pants. And yes, she would even go to Walmart wearing them. Heck she even went to school in pjs. Back in my day this wouldn’t have been allowed. Was pjs allowed in your school?

I thought I would answer this question of did I ever want to leave the house wearing pajama pants for you? Absolutely not. I thought it was wrong. Uncouth. Pajamas belonged in the house, not out in public. But then something happened. Fast forward what feels like 150 years — or as Charlie would say, “before the dinosaurs left the face of the earth” — and things have changed.

Because now? You might just see me wearing pajamas out and about. Why? Because I’m a mom. I’m tired. And sometimes I just don’t give a dang. And honestly, I learned a little bit of this from Charlie. That boy will wear pajamas everywhere. 24/7 if he could and yes, that includes to work if they would let him.

Recently, he inherited his grandfather’s black and white checkered pajamas, and one day he looked at me and said: “Let’s go to QT.” I looked at him. He looked at me. And out the door we went. Charlie was wearing those black and white checkered pajamas that belonged to his grandpa and I smiled.

Then I looked down at myself and thought… “Nope, I don’t have pajamas on.” But guess what I did have? House shoes. And mismatched socks. Because apparently, in our house, we have reached the point where comfort wins. The funny part? We were just sneaking out for a little mom-and-son adventure.

A quick trip to QT or Sonic — whichever one had drinks on sale at the moment. Nothing fancy. Nothing planned. Just time together. And yes, David probably would have looked at us and wondered what in the world we were doing leaving the house dressed like that. But you know what? It was just me and Charlie. And it was fun.

Those are the moments that create memories. Those are the stories we laugh about later. And that is one of the things I am Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed for — having a son who is not embarrassed to walk out the door with me, no matter what either one of us is wearing. Because sometimes the best memories are not made when everything is perfect. Sometimes they are made wearing pajamas, house shoes, and mismatched socks while running to get a drink with your child.

So today’s front porch question is: 🌙 How many pairs of pajamas do you own?

I would say 4 to 5 pairs for me but that can change at the drop of a hat. Charlie has to many pairs to count thanks to his Grandpa. David has one pair of pjs. Pheobie has none and Bear has 2 pairs of pjs.

And the bigger question… Would you wear them to the store?

I would, Charlie would and David no, how no, way but Pheobie and Bear said they woud

Come sit on the porch with me and tell me your answer.

Because these are the little things that make us stop and go… “Hmm…”

Grateful. Thankful. Blessed.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
