My family would like to welcome you back to another Coffee or Sweet Tea Conversation From My Front Porch — Questions That Make Us Go Hmmm… Today’s question is one that can tell you a lot about a person. But before I share the question with you I wanted to let you know this question comes from my love of socks.
Do your socks have to match? 🧦
Now, I have to admit something… There was a time when my socks absolutely had to match. No questions asked. I used to collect socks, and if they didn’t have a matching partner, there was no way, no how I was wearing them. Every sock needed its mate, and my drawer needed to be organized. I had socks for every #Holiday and I still try and purchase them and wear them on Holidays but instead of just using them one time now I wear them all year round.
Fast forward to today… I’m a mom, a wife, and a business owner. And let me tell you something — I do not have time to stand around matching socks! If two socks are clean and they fit, congratulations… they have found a purpose. Because after doing laundry, the last thing you will find me doing is sitting there folding socks into perfect little pairs.
If you think I’m going to stand at home or at the laundromat sorting socks all day, you are C-R-A-Z-Y. Crazy. It’s just not happening. But here is the funny part… I can buy myself a brand-new package of socks. They can have cute designs, fun colors, or patterns I picked out just for me. And then Charlie runs out of socks.
Guess what? There go Mama’s socks. Suddenly, those socks belong to everybody. Even David will borrow my sock if he can’t find any. And shoes? Well, shoes are fair game in our house too. I wear a size 7–8. Charlie wears a size 11–12. But somehow, we still manage to try to wear each other’s shoes.
You should see me walking around in some of Charlie’s shoes. I look like I’m clomping around! And then there is David. David wears a size 13. If I need to walk to the mailbox or take a quick walk and I can’t find my shoes, sometimes I just grab his. Because in our house, socks and shoes seem to belong to whoever needs them at the moment. If I ever need to get a job I could in the Circus because sometimes my feet look like a Clowns feet. And the funniest part? I’ve even seen David grab a pair of Charlie’s Crocs or clogs — including the ones his grandmother gave him — and try to wear them. Now that is a sight you don’t want to miss!
So today’s front porch question is:
🧦 Do your socks have to match?
Are you:
- A perfectly matched sock person?
- A “close enough” sock person?
- A mismatched sock person who says life is too short to worry about pairs?
And while we’re at it…
Do shoes in your house belong to one person, or are they fair game too?
Grab your coffee or sweet tea and tell me your answer!
Because these are the little things that make us stop and go…
“Hmm…”
Grateful. Thankful. Blessed.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
