I woke up this morning and sat down at my desk to work when I decided to check out what #Holidays was happening today. When I found out it was Change A Light Day, and apparently our house the light in my office and even the hallways decided it wanted to celebrate a few days early.
The other day I was sitting in my bedroom office getting ready to work when I turned on my light with the fan. And the light started flickering on and off. On. Off. On. Off. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought I was sitting in a haunted house! Laughing out loud.
I had to call Charlie in, and he took the light out for me. Then the next day David came home, and we started putting lights throughout the house. I was like, “Don’t put one in there. Don’t put one in there!” That was the room where the light had been flashing on and off, and I wasn’t taking any chances.
David, being David, said, “It shouldn’t do that if I do this.” And thank the Lord, he was right. We got the new lights in, and suddenly it’s like I can see again! I have light! You don’t realize how much you appreciate having a good light until you’ve been sitting there watching one flicker like you’re waiting for the ghost to appear.
But apparently our house wasn’t finished with us yet. A couple of days later, I was walking down the stairs when I noticed another light going out. And guess what? It was doing the same thing. Strobing back and forth. Back and forth. It looked like somebody had installed a disco ball in my hallway. Except I wasn’t dancing.
I was trying to get down the stairs without taking my life into my own hands. That light is so high up that I don’t know how in the world we’re going to change it. We’re probably going to have to call the maintenance man. And let me tell you something. Having a maintenance man come into our house with three dogs is going to be worse than having a wrestling match in the living room.
We’re going to have to keep three dogs away from the man, the ladder, the tools, and everything else they’re going to think is there for their entertainment. Oh my goodness. I don’t even want to think about it. But I really do need that light changed. Especially because going up and down those stairs at night when the light is acting like a strobe light isn’t exactly my idea of safe.
And I have visions of me making it all the way down the stairs only to end up at the bottom. And that’s not how I want my October—or my holiday season—to go! So I’m grateful, thankful, and blessed that David is home one day during the week and can be here when we need to call the maintenance man.
Because somebody needs to get that hallway light changed ASAP. Please pray that we can get it taken care of before I end up becoming the newest decoration at the bottom of the stairs. Laughing out loud. Or Charlie or even David does or God forbid my brother who comes up sometimes when he needs something.
You know, one of the things I loved about homeschooling was that almost anything could become a lesson. And changing a light bulb—or figuring out why one keeps flickering—is one of those everyday things that could have turned into a homeschool lesson. We could have talked about electricity. We could have talked about circuits, switches and how lights work. We could have talked about different kinds of light bulbs and why some are more energy efficient than others. We could have talked about electrical safety.
And most importantly, we could have talked about knowing when something is a job for Mom and Dad and when it’s time to call someone who knows what they’re doing. Because believe me, I’m not climbing up that ladder to change that hallway light. There are some homeschool lessons you can learn from a book. And then there are the ones you learn because the lightd starts flickering like you’re living in a haunted house. Life has a funny way of teaching us things.
So today, on Change A Light Day, I’m thankful for the lights that work, thankful for Charlie helping me with the first one, thankful for David being willing to tackle the lights throughout the house, and especially thankful that I don’t have to climb that giant ladder myself.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to keep my eye on that hallway light. Because if it starts flashing again, I’m calling David. And I’m staying right where I am.
