I was looking through the #Holidays we should celebrate in October and I found out October 1 was International Music Day #MusicDay. I don’t know about you but when I hear that I immediately thought of “the day the music died.” Do you remember that day?
Before you ask if they have anything in common no, they don’t and I know that. But for some reason, that’s where my brain goes every time I hear International Music Day. Maybe it’s because we all have certain words, songs and phrases that immediately make us think of something else.
And that’s one of the things I love about music. Music has a way of attaching itself to our memories. A song can take you back to a particular year. A particular person. A particular place. Or even a particular moment you haven’t thought about in years. That’s what I want to know from you today.
When you hear the words International Music Day, what comes to mind? Is there a particular song? A singer? A concert? A dance? A family memory? Maybe you remember sitting in the car with your parents while a certain song played on the radio. Maybe there’s a song that reminds you of your husband or wife. Maybe there’s a song that takes you right back to high school. Maybe music reminds you of someone you loved and lost.
Or maybe, like me, one phrase makes your brain jump to something that doesn’t technically have anything to do with the original subject. That’s okay, too. I think that’s what makes music so fascinating. We don’t just listen to songs. We attach memories to them.
Years later, you can hear the opening notes of a song and suddenly remember exactly where you were. You might remember who you were with. You might remember what you were doing. You might remember how you felt. Sometimes you’ll even remember things you didn’t realize you remembered. And that’s pretty amazing when you think about it.
Today would be a great day to ask your family about their music memories. Ask your children: What’s your favorite song right now? Ask your parents: What was your favorite music when you were growing up? Ask your grandparents: What song takes you back to when you were young? And then tell them yours.
You might be surprised at the conversations that follow. Because music can become a little piece of family history. So here’s my question for today: What does International Music Day make YOU think of? Does a particular song immediately pop into your head? Does it remind you of someone? Or does your brain, like mine, take you somewhere completely unexpected?
For me, apparently International Music Day = the day the music died. Don’t ask me why. I couldn’t tell you. But now I’m curious. What does music make you remember? Happy International Music Day! Now tell me your story. Then tell me your families story.
