I Am a Good Person After Coffee: A Little Sign With a Big Truth

Life has gotten off track this week and its been a little while since I shared a post for our home reorganization series Grace by Grace: Room by Room — Coffee Nook & Snack Bar Reset. This morning I would like to share a sign I purchased for Charlie for our Coffee Nook/ Snack Bar area. The sign says I Am a Good Person After Coffee and I would like to believe that about myself but sometimes I wonder if its true.

As for David and Charlie I know they are better people after Coffee and that is why this sign fit my family perfectly. This is why resetting a room isn’t about buying a whole bunch of new things. Sometimes it’s about finding one little piece that makes the space feel like your family. That’s what happened when I found this little sign at Hobby Lobby,.

The sign says: “I am a good person after coffee.”

And if you know me, you probably already understand why it came home with me. Charlie, David, and I are all coffee lovers. And I’m going to be honest with you: sometimes in the morning, before I’ve had my coffee, I am not necessarily the person you want to have a long conversation with. Once I’ve had that first cup? Much better.

So when I saw this little sign, I laughed because it was just too true. It is a small square sign in a beautiful light sage green. I love that soft green, and it fits perfectly with the colors I’m using as we work through our Grace by Grace: Room by Room resets. It’s small enough to sit on a shelf in our coffee nook, but it also has a clip on the back so it can be hung on the wall.

That’s exactly the kind of decorating piece I like for this space. I don’t want everything sitting on the counters. I want things to be useful, pretty, and easy to move around when I’m resetting the space. The sign was marked $2.79, but I purchased it during a Hobby Lobby sale, so I believe I paid about 40 percent off.

I rarely buy these little decorative signs at full price because Hobby Lobby regularly puts them on sale, and I’m perfectly happy to wait. And this one was worth waiting for. Especially because it belongs in our coffee nook. Charlie saw it and immediately said, “That’s very, very true.” Then he pointed out that it wasn’t just true about me. It was true about him too. And Dad sometimes. I had to laugh because he’s right.

There is something about that first cup of coffee that can change the entire morning. But that’s what makes this sign more than just decoration. It is a little piece of our family. Charlie drinks coffee. David drinks coffee. I drink coffee. And now we have a sign sitting in our coffee and snack nook reminding all three of us that maybe we should have our coffee before we start making important decisions.

Or having serious conversations. Or answering too many questions. There is another detail about this sign that I really love. The word coffee is written in a beautiful script. The rest of the saying is simple, but the lettering gives that one word a little something extra. I love the way the script looks, and it makes the sign feel a little fancier without taking away from the humor.

And I think my mom would have loved this sign too. That’s another reason I like adding little meaningful pieces to our home. A room can be beautiful, but I want our rooms to tell our story too. That’s what Grace by Grace: Room by Room is really about for me. We’re not just cleaning. We’re not just organizing. We’re not just moving things around. We’re creating spaces that work better for our family and adding little reminders of the people, memories, and things we love along the way.

Our Coffee Nook & Snack Bar Reset is still a work in progress. And this little sage-green sign is one of the pieces that is helping me make it feel like ours. It doesn’t take up much room. It doesn’t cost a lot. It doesn’t require a major decorating project. But every time I see it, I smile. And isn’t that what we want from our homes?

A place that makes us smile when we walk into it. A place that feels comfortable. A place that reminds us of the people we love. And, apparently, a place that reminds us to drink our coffee before we try to be nice. You can find Hobby Lobby’s current home decor selections at HobbyLobby.com. Prices and availability can change, so check their current listings and sales before shopping.

For now, my little sign has found its home in our Coffee Nook & Snack Bar. And I think it’s going to fit in perfectly. Because around here, we may be Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed… But first, we need coffee.

Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
