All my life I’ve wanted a old Country house with a wrap around porch rocking chairs and Roses to look at that bloom all around the house with Tulips mixed in. When David and I got together my dream added a claw foot tub like my grandmother used to have for both us. In our Trailer David helped me create a porch not the one I wanted but it was a porch and that’s what counts.
Then we had to move and I had to give up my porch which the LORD knew I would miss. He helped us move into our Town Home and not only did I end up with a porch, but a balcony and even a back porch my family can grill on. Making us grateful, thankful and blessed because there is something special about a front porch.
For my family a front porch is more than just a place attached to a house. It is a place where people gather. It is where neighbors wave as they walk by, where families sit together at the end of the day, and where conversations happen without needing a reason. Some of the best memories are made in places where we simply slow down. Aren’t they?
Growing up, many of us remember those moments. Sitting outside when the weather was nice. Watching the world go by. Visiting with family members who stopped by for a while. Listening to stories that had been told many times before but somehow never got old. Those moments may have seemed ordinary at the time, but looking back, we realize they were the moments that mattered.
That feeling is what I want to bring to Grateful Moments and why I would like to welcome you to the first official conversation of Pull Up a Chair. When I thought about what I wanted this series to be, I kept coming back to the idea of a front porch. Not because everyone has a front porch, but because everyone understands what a front porch represents.
It represents welcome. It represents connection. It represents taking time to be present with the people around us. It takes us back to my grandparents home and to my mother n laws home as well as my friends and families homes. If you have a porch pull up a chair and join us for a cool drink and conversation.
In a world where everything seems to move faster every day, sometimes we need a reminder that it is okay to slow down. We do not always have to be rushing to the next thing. Sometimes the best moments happen when we stop and enjoy where we are. For me, some of those moments happen right at home.
They happen when David and I sit together after a long day. They happen when we share a meal, talk about what happened during the day, or laugh about something one of our family members said. They happen when Charlie comes home and shares something about his day. They happen when Gerald is part of the everyday conversations and routines that make our home what it is.
They happen when Phoebe and Bear Bear remind us that pets are not just animals living in our home. They are family. They bring their own personalities, their own funny moments, and their own special memories. And now Sandy has joined our family, reminding us that sometimes the biggest blessings arrive in unexpected ways.
That is what I love about everyday life. You never know when a simple moment is going to become a favorite memory. A quick trip to the store can turn into discovering something new. A recipe made for dinner can become a meal your family requests this recipe again and again. A conversation can become a story you remember years later.
Those are the moments I want to capture. Pull Up a Chair is not about having a perfect life. It is not about pretending every day is easy. Life has its challenges. Families have difficult conversations. Plans change. Things do not always happen the way we expect. But even in those moments, there are blessings.
Sometimes the blessing is found in the people who stand beside us. Sometimes it is found in the memories we carry. Sometimes it is found in learning something new, trying something different, or realizing that God had a different plan than the one we imagined. This series will be a place where we talk about all of those things.
We will share family stories, recipes, books, movies, savings ideas, faith, traditions, and the simple joys that make a house feel like home. Some conversations may make us laugh. Some may bring back memories. Some may encourage someone who needs a reminder that they are not alone. Because that is what happens when people gather together.
Stories are shared. Memories are made. Connections are created. So today, I invite you to imagine pulling up a chair. Maybe you are sitting on your own porch. Maybe you are at your kitchen table. Maybe you are enjoying your favorite drink while taking a few quiet minutes for yourself. Wherever you are, there is a place for you here.
