I wanted to share a new book I found for our 10 minute challenge which takes us back to Dolly Parton and the question 🎶 What you got cookin’? 🎶Because on Wednesday’s we highlight a cookbook we’ve found and with 9-25 coming up and becoming – 2- 5 day in remembrance of Dolly I thought it would be fun to share one or two of her Cookbooks with you.
Com and join us as we’re adding a little Dolly Parton to the mix! Share your favorite Dolly memory with us. Here is a fun fact I thought I would sharfe with you this morning. I’ve actually been waking up with “9 to 5” running through my head for the last couple of days. So when I realized that September 25 is Dolly Parton Day, I thought, why not combine Dolly, cooking and our 10-Minute Reading Challenge?
Let’s go down a little Dolly rabbit hole! and see what Dolly has cooking? I don’t know about you but if you’re looking for a cookbook to explore with your family, Dolly Parton has a couple of cookbooks worth checking out. Not only that you will find the cookbooks inside our Christmas Gift Guide/ Wish List this year.
Now,I have a question for you. Did you know Dolly and her sister Rachel Parton George wrote Good Lookin’ Cookin’: A Year of Meals – A Lifetime of Memories, which combines recipes, family memories and menus.
That isn’t all Dolly also published Dolly’s Dixie Fixin’s: Love, Laughter and Lots of Good Food filled with Southern-inspired recipes and stories. Here is something that might surprise you these books can be at Walmart.
But today I don’t want to simply tell you which cookbook to buy. I want to ask you something. If You Could Cook With Dolly Parton… What would you want to cook with Dolly Parton — and why? Would you invite her sister to join you in the kitchen and why?
For me, I’d want to make one of those down-home family recipes her parents made. After all, I’m from Texas and Dolly is from Tennessee. You know we’re going to have two different ways to cook the same things!
Buttercups, it might get a little dicey in that kitchen, so you might want to stand outside until we’re finished cooking. Maybe Dolly and I would agree about the recipe. Maybe we’d disagree. Or maybe we’d decide that the most important part of cooking together is sitting down and enjoying what we made.
So tell me: What would YOU cook with Dolly? Would you make biscuits? Chicken? A family recipe? Something Southern? Something you’ve always wanted to learn? And, most importantly: Why that recipe?
Now let’s bring this back to our 10-Minute Reading Challenge. When we’re asking children to read for 10 minutes a day, we’re not asking you to send them off by themselves and say, “Go read.” We’re asking you to come sit beside them.
Grab your favorite drink and your favorite blanket. Cuddle up on the couch. And read together for 10 minutes. Yes, it can be a book. Yes, it can be on your Kindle. Yes, it can be a magazine. It can even be a cereal box.
And if you’re sitting there going through bills, you can even read those! Because the point isn’t necessarily what you’re reading. The point is that your child sees you reading right along beside them. You’re teaching them that reading isn’t something children only do because somebody told them to.
Reading is something our family does. And guess what? You can earn a ticket, too! If your child has a ticket chart for our challenge, start your own. Because when this challenge is over, you deserve to be pampered, too.
Maybe your reward is a book. Maybe it’s your favorite dessert. Maybe it’s an afternoon to yourself. Maybe it’s simply getting to sit down with your favorite drink and your favorite blanket without somebody asking you to do something. You’ve earned it!
Now, lets get to the Guys… This does NOT mean you get to sit on the couch holding the remote and say: “I’m reading.” Nope. Put the remote down. Put the phone down. Pick something up. Read it. For 10 minutes and no, talking. Let your children see you doing it. That’s the example we’re trying to set.
So today, grab something to read and spend ten minutes reading with your family. Then come back and tell us: If Dolly Parton pulled up a chair beside you in the kitchen, what would you cook together — and why?
Maybe you’ll even find a recipe you want to try. And if you do, we’d love to hear how it turned out! One book. One recipe. One couch. Ten minutes. Maybe a little Dolly music playing in the background. Sounds like a pretty good Wednesday to me.
Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed.
