What If I Was a Tennis Shoe?

Before we begin a new day that may or may not get busy I wanted to bring you a new question in our series asking you a question and then seeing what ChatGPT would choose. This morning I decided to ask what if we were tennis shoes adventure with the Cates family because this is one of Charlie’s favorite shoes.

Before I sit down this morning, and get to work Charlie and I thought we would share the tennis shoes ChatGPT picked out for us and our thoughts. Then we wanted to ask what you thought of the answers and why.

This morning’s question is all about tennis shoes, which Charlie and even Suzzane absolutely loves! Plus, tennis shoes is the shoes I wear most of the time unless I can find my sandals and its the only shoes David wears. So come join us as we see what ChatGPT picked for the people—and even the dogs—in my family.

Then leave me a comment and let me know what you think about the answers it chose for my family. Do you think ChatGPT picked the right tennis shoes for each of us? Why or why not? And if you were choosing a tennis shoe for my family, what brand would you have picked—and why?

Before we get started, though, I want to say something important. Just because I use ChatGPT doesn’t mean I think everyone should. I’ve enjoyed using it to help with several different projects, and it has helped me a lot. But we all have different opinions about technology, AI, social media, and the tools we use every day.

You have to do what feels right for you and follow your own heart about what you choose to use. For me, ChatGPT is simply another tool I enjoy using to ask questions, get ideas, have conversations, and sometimes look at my family from a completely different perspective.

And this morning, we’re not trying to solve the world’s problems. We’re just having a little fun. 😂 Because sometimes a silly question can turn into a pretty interesting conversation. So I asked ChatGPT to look at the personalities of the people I love and answer this question:

“If each member of my family were a tennis shoe, what brand would they be?” Then I took it one step further and asked: “If our entire family were one tennis shoe, what brand would we be—and why?”

I didn’t tell ChatGPT what shoes we actually wear. I wanted to see what it would come up with based on who we are. And some of the answers surprised me. Some were wrong. Some were surprisingly right. And some made me say: “I never would have thought of that…but I can actually see it!” That’s what made this so much fun.

And I decided that if we were going to do this, we weren’t going to pretend ChatGPT got everything right. If it got something right, I’d tell you. If it missed something, I’d tell you that, too. Because ChatGPT doesn’t know my family the way I do.

It can make a guess based on what I’ve told it, but I have the memories, the stories, the little things that make each person who they are. So we’re going to tell it like it is. We’re going to look at what ChatGPT picked, why it picked it, and then I’m going to tell you what I think.

And yes, we’re including the dogs. Because Bear, Phoebe, Sandy, and Gunner aren’t just dogs. They’re family. ❤️🐾 So grab your morning coffee or sweet tea, pull up a chair, and let’s see what ChatGPT came up with.

David — ChatGPT said David would be a pair of Skechers because he’s the kind of person who values comfort, dependability, practicality, and reliability over trying to be the flashiest person in the room.

Skechers are the kind of shoes made for everyday life. They’re comfortable enough to wear all day, practical enough to depend on, and built to keep up with whatever the day brings. ChatGPT said David isn’t necessarily looking for the newest, most expensive, or most attention-grabbing shoe. He’s looking for something that works.

If it’s comfortable, feels good, does what it’s supposed to do, and can keep up with him, then that’s what matters. And that fits David because he’s the kind of person you can count on day after day.

He’s dependable and steady. He’s not trying to impress everybody around him. He’s practical, reliable, and comfortable being exactly who he is. In other words, ChatGPT saw David as the everyday shoe you know you can count on.

What I Think About David– ChatGPT got this one exactly right. David really would be a pair of Skechers. Although, when David buys shoes, more times than not, he’ll go to Walmart because he’d rather save the money. He’d rather spend the money on more expensive shoes for Charlie and me. That’s just David.

There have been times when he has worn Skechers, though, and I have to admit, they look so nice on him. And there’s another reason this answer touched my heart. Skechers were Suzanne’s favorite shoes.

So when ChatGPT picked Skechers for David, it brought Suzanne into this little conversation, too. David is comfortable. He’s practical. He’s reliable. He’s the most dependable person I know. And if David ever isn’t dependable, then we know there’s something wrong with life! 😂

He’s built for everyday life—almost like a Tonka truck from our childhood that you know is going to start when you need it and get you where you’re going. David isn’t the flashiest person, and anyone who knows him knows that. He doesn’t need to be.

If something works, feels good, is comfortable, and can keep up with him, then that’s a godsend. And that’s exactly what I think of when I think about a pair of Skechers. They’re an everyday shoe.

They’re practical. They’re reliable. They’re comfortable. They’re made to keep going. That’s David. So, ChatGPT… You got this one right on the money! Do you think ChatGPT got it right or wrong?

Me ChatGPT picked: New Balance because New Balance represents someone who is steady, determined, practical, strong, and always moving forward. It said New Balance isn’t necessarily about being the newest or trendiest shoe.

It’s about finding something that fits, something you can depend on, and something that helps you keep going even when life doesn’t go exactly as planned. ChatGPT saw me as someone who has been through a lot but keeps putting one foot in front of the other.

ChatGPT said I am the person who keeps my family connected, keeps the stories alive, keeps creating, keeps asking questions, and keeps finding something new to be grateful for.

It also said New Balance fits because I’m not afraid to be myself. I have my own style, my own opinions, and my own way of doing things. I don’t have to follow whatever everyone else is doing.

And just like a good pair of New Balance, ChatGPT saw me as someone who is built for the long haul—comfortable enough for everyday moments but strong enough for the miles that life sometimes asks me to walk. It picked New Balance because I’m dependable, resilient, family-centered, and always moving forward.

What I Think About Me– Now, this one surprised me. ChatGPT got me right. I just never would have thought of myself as a pair of New Balance shoes! And honestly, that makes this even more fun because now I want to go shopping. 😂👟

I do try to be steady. I’m determined. I’m practical—or at least that’s something I’m working on! 😂 I am strong, and I am always moving forward. I’ve definitely been through a lot in my life, and I try to keep putting one foot in front of the other, just like the Little Engine That Could.

I think I can. I think I can. I think I can. And I hope I’m really built for the long haul, because I want to be here for Charlie. That’s important to me. I want to keep making memories, keep telling our family stories, keep learning, keep creating, and keep moving forward with the people I love.

And yes, I am definitely family-centered. So while I never would have picked New Balance for myself before this little experiment, after reading ChatGPT’s reasoning… I can see it. And now I’m just wondering what color New Balance I should go shopping for! Okay, ChatGPT.

You got me right, too. Now Charlie and I need to go to the mall to buy me a new pair of New Balance shoes. Would you want to come to the mall with us? We can stop for a drink and a Cookie once we finish shopping.

Charlie – ChatGPT said Charlie would be a pair of Nike because Nike represents someone who is driven, energetic, creative, competitive, independent, and always looking toward what’s next.

It said Nike isn’t just about a shoe you put on your feet. It’s about movement, ambition, and pushing yourself to do something bigger. Nike has a personality that says: “I’m going to do this my way, and I’m going to keep moving forward.”

ChatGPT saw Charlie as someone who doesn’t necessarily want to follow the path everybody else has already taken. He’s interested in technology, gaming, photography, creating things, and building his own ideas.

It also said Nike fits because Charlie has a combination of creativity and determination. He can take an idea and turn it into something of his own, and he’s willing to put in the work to make things happen. And there’s another side to the Nike choice.

Nike shoes can be bold and expressive. They’re designed to stand out, and ChatGPT saw that same quality in Charlie. He’s not afraid to have his own interests, his own style, and his own way of doing things.

ChatGPT said Charlie would be the kind of Nike that you look at and think: “He’s going somewhere.” Not necessarily because he has everything figured out today, but because he’s always learning, experimenting, creating, and looking for the next opportunity.

So ChatGPT’s reasoning was that Charlie is active, ambitious, creative, independent, forward-thinking, and always ready for the next challenge. That is Charlie to a T if you ask me but what do you think and why?

What I Think About Charlie– I think ChatGPT did a pretty darn good job with Charlie. Charlie is definitely driven, energetic, and competitive. In fact, if you ever decide to play a video game with Charlie, you’d better be prepared! 😂 You might get cussed out one minute and praised the next. That’s Charlie.

He definitely has that competitive side. He does look for what’s next, although probably not quite as much as everybody else in the family. But he is definitely movement. He’s never still! He has ambition, too.

I do wish sometimes that he would push himself a little harder, because I know there’s so much more he’s capable of. There are times when he really does push himself to move forward, and other times when I’m thinking, Come on, Charlie! You can do this! 😂

But one thing ChatGPT absolutely nailed is his love of technology, gaming, photography, creating, and building his own things. That’s Charlie. He’s creative. He’s determined. And, oh my goodness, is he bold and expressive!

We’re actually getting ready to do his hair pink again, so that should tell you something right there. Charlie is definitely one of a kind. He thinks outside the box. And if I had to describe his personality sometimes? Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. You never quite know which Charlie you’re getting!

But one thing I can agree with ChatGPT about completely is this: Charlie is definitely going somewhere. Now, as for Nike… Nike is actually a shoe we’ve looked at numerous times. I’m sure we’ve bought a pair or two over the years, although I honestly can’t remember exactly when or where.

Because more times than not, Charlie and I are looking at the same shoes. We love matching. That’s one of those little things we do together. And sometimes, we don’t even have to buy matching shoes because one of us just steals the other one’s shoes! 😂

Sometimes I’ll steal Charlie’s shoes, and sometimes Charlie steals mine. Evern though I wear a 8 or 8 1/2 and Charlie wears a 11. We make it work. Because it just depends on whose shoes are where and where we’re going. That’s just how we are. So yes, ChatGPT… Nike actually works pretty well for Charlie.

Don’t you think so?

Suzanne — ChatGPT said Suzanne would be a pair of Skechers because they represent someone who is comfortable, genuine, dependable, and quietly strong. If you knew Suzzane you would know that is here.

It said Skechers aren’t necessarily about trying to be the center of attention and she never wanted to be. They’re about being comfortable in your own skin, enjoying everyday moments, and being a dependable presence for the people you love.

ChatGPT saw Suzanne as someone with a warm, approachable personality—the kind of person who didn’t have to be flashy to make an impression. There was something familiar and comforting about her, much like slipping on your favorite pair of shoes and knowing immediately that they feel right.

It also said Skechers fit because they’re practical but still have personality. They can go almost anywhere, they’re made for everyday life, and they’re the kind of shoes you reach for because they’re dependable and comfortable.

What I Think About Suzanne There is a lot I would change about ChatGPT’s answer. First of all, Skechers weren’t just a personality choice for Suzanne. Skechers were the only shoes Suzanne would wear besides her flip-flops.

And when I say flip-flops, I mean Suzanne was ride-or-die for her flip-flops. Those flip-flops were her shoes 24/7, 365 days a year. Rain. Sleet. Snow. Shine. It didn’t matter. If Suzanne could wear her flip-flops, she was wearing her flip-flops! And when she passed away, she had her overalls and her flip-flops with her. That’s just Suzanne.

Every once in a while, though, you would find her rocking a pair of Skechers. And here’s something else I love about this answer: Suzanne was the one who introduced me to Skechers.

So when ChatGPT picked Skechers for me earlier, I never would have thought about that connection until we got to Suzanne. Now I see it. But ChatGPT did get something wrong. It said Suzanne never wanted to be the center of attention. Nope. Not that part. Suzanne definitely didn’t want to be the center of attention! But more times than not she was because of her kindness and her personality everyone flocked to her.

But the rest? Absolutely. She was very comfortable. She was dependable. She was strong—even though she didn’t always like to show that strength. And she was genuine. Suzanne had such a warm, approachable personality. She never met a stranger. Honestly, she never met anyone she didn’t like. That was Suzanne.

She could make people feel comfortable, and she had a way of accepting people for who they were. So while Skechers may not have been Suzanne’s everyday shoe—that title belonged firmly to those beloved flip-flops—Skechers still feels like a pretty perfect choice.

And now I’m smiling because I can just picture Suzanne in her overalls and flip-flops, probably wondering why we’re having an entire conversation about shoes when she already knew exactly what shoes she wanted to wear.

ChatGPT got the brand right. It just didn’t know the whole Suzanne story. And that’s exactly why I love doing these “What If I Was…” questions. Because sometimes ChatGPT can look at what we tell it and make a pretty good guess… But family remembers the details that make the person who they really were. While allowing me to share stories of those I love.

Gerald ChatGPT said Gerald would be a pair of Reebok because Reebok represents someone who is strong, straightforward, practical, independent, and dependable. It saw Gerald as having a solid, down-to-earth personality.

He’s not someone who needs a lot of attention or recognition. He’s practical, capable, and the kind of person who can be counted on to do what needs to be done. ChatGPT said Reebok has a rugged, hardworking quality to it.

It’s functional, durable, and designed to get the job done without needing to be flashy. It also saw Gerald as independent and capable—someone who is used to taking care of himself and figuring things out on his own.

Overall, ChatGPT saw Gerald as someone who values function over fuss, doesn’t need to show off, and would rather have something that works than something that’s simply popular.

What I Think About Gerald– I can actually see Gerald in a pair of Reebok. Now, would Gerald actually go out and buy a pair of name-brand Reeboks? Absolutely not! 😂 Gerald is much more of a Walmart shoe kind of guy.

He would never spend a bunch of money on name-brand shoes if he could find something at Walmart that did the job. But what’s funny is how well ChatGPT described his personality.

Gerald is strong. He’s straightforward. He’s practical. He’s independent. He’s dependable. He’s solid and down-to-earth. And there is definitely a rugged, hardworking quality about him.

He’s got that hardworking quality I remember from my dad. Gerald is also independent and capable. He used to take care of himself without thinking twice about it as well as my mom and dad/

But now, with his eyesight getting worse and worse and him becoming blind, things are becoming harder and harder for him. And that’s where I think ChatGPT doesn’t quite know the whole story.

Because even though things are harder for Gerald now, he still doesn’t give up. He still takes care of us. He still does the dishes. He still finds things he can do to help other people. He still wants to contribute. He still wants to be useful. And that’s Gerald.

His circumstances may be changing, but his determination hasn’t gone away. He has that solid, down-to-earth personality ChatGPT talked about, and he has a strength that doesn’t always announce itself.

But I will tell you one thing ChatGPT definitely didn’t mention… When Gerald gets mad—OH MY GOSH! You better watch yourself! Because that calm, practical, down-to-earth Gerald can definitely let you know when you’ve crossed the line.

So, ChatGPT… I think you did pretty good with Gerald. You may have picked a shoe he would never spend his money on, but the personality? Reebok actually fits him pretty darn well. What do you think and why?

Debbie ChatGPT said Debbie would be a pair of Adidas because Adidas represents someone who is active, caring, adaptable, stylish without trying too hard, and comfortable being herself.

It saw Debbie as someone who has a combination of strength and warmth. She can handle responsibility, take care of the people around her, and still have her own personality and interests.

ChatGPT said Adidas fits because the brand has a balance between practicality and personality. It’s a shoe that can be comfortable and useful for everyday life while still having a little bit of style.

It also saw Debbie as someone who is loyal and supportive, the kind of person who cares about the people she loves and shows that through what she does rather than simply what she says.

ChatGPT’s overall reasoning was that Debbie would be a shoe that is dependable enough for everyday life but still has personality and individuality. I believe that is correct. Do you think it is?

What I Think About Debbie I can see Debbie as an Adidas, although I would make a couple of changes to ChatGPT’s description. Sometimes Debbie is comfortable being herself. Other times, she’s not.

Sometimes she goes into herself, and when she does, it can be really hard to pull her back out. But she is caring. She can be active. And when she was younger, she definitely tried to be stylish.

These days, though? She really doesn’t care as much. I think she’s become much more comfortable just being herself. And I do think she’s gotten stronger. She’s dependable. She’s got personality. And she definitely has her own individuality.

But what’s really funny about ChatGPT choosing Adidas is that Adidas is already part of one of our family memories. One time, Debbie, David, Charlie, and I were shopping at Sears looking for a pair of shoes for Charlie.

And Debbie spotted a pair of Adidas with fire on the side. Well… They fit Debbie and Charlie. And those two wanted those shoes so bad! That’s the kind of thing Debbie would do. Especially for her nephews. Charlie who is her ride or die just like Suzzane was.

There were times when Debbie would work all night, come over to my house, sleep for maybe two hours, and then spend the entire day with Charlie. Or she’d pick Charlie up on a Friday and head straight to Oklahoma with him

That’s the kind of aunt she is and grandma too. She would make the time. She would show up. She would put the people she loved first. Now, Debbie and Charlie aren’t as close as they used to be, and that’s just part of life.

But let me tell you something: If one of them needs something, they drop whatever they’re doing and are there for each other. That part hasn’t changed. And that’s why I can see how Adidas fits Debbie.

Maybe it’s not because she’s always the most stylish person or because she’s always comfortable being herself. It’s because Adidas has that combination of personality, individuality, strength, and dependability that I see in Debbie.

And that little memory of Debbie and Charlie wanting those Adidas with the fire on the side? Well, that makes me smile. Because sometimes a shoe isn’t just a shoe. Sometimes it becomes part of a family memory. So, ChatGPT… You got Debbie pretty darn close. Don’t you think so?

Renee — ChatGPT said Renee would be a pair of Converse because Converse represents someone who is independent, creative, individualistic, dependable, and a little unconventional.

It said Converse has never really been about fitting into everybody else’s idea of what you should be wearing. They’re shoes with personality. You can dress them up, dress them down, make them your own, and wear them in a way that reflects who you are.

ChatGPT saw Renee as someone who thinks differently and isn’t afraid to do things her own way. She has an independent streak and doesn’t necessarily need everyone else to agree with her before she makes a decision.

It also said Converse fits because they’re timeless and adaptable. They’re not dependent on whatever happens to be the newest trend. They have their own identity and have been around for generations.

ChatGPT’s overall reasoning was that Renee would be a shoe that says: “I’m going to be myself, and I’m going to do things my way.” It’s a shoe with personality, individuality, creativity, and a little bit of an unexpected edge.

What I Think About ReneeSpot on. Renee is definitely a little unconventional. She lives in a holler in a little bitty town, so that probably tells you something right there! She’s dependable. She’s individualistic.

She loves to make things, so she’s definitely creative. She’s very independent, and she absolutely thinks differently. And Renee is not afraid to tell you if she doesn’t like something! Trust me on that.

She isn’t going to pretend to like something just because everybody else does. If she doesn’t like it, she’ll tell you. If she wants to do something differently, she’ll do it differently. And honestly, that is part of what makes Renee, Renee.

ChatGPT also said Converse is timeless and adaptable. Yep. That fits her, too. She’s going to be herself, and she’s going to do things her own way. In fact, I think that whole description should be her Jon Bon Jovi song: “I’m going to be myself, and I’m going to do things my own way.”

She has personality. She has individuality. She has creativity. And she definitely has an unexpected edge. So, ChatGPT… You got Renee spot on! I can’t wait to see what Renee thinks about her being a Converse. Do you think it fit her?

Now Let’s Talk About the Dogs!

Because if you’ve been reading along, you already know that the dogs aren’t just part of the household. They’re family. So ChatGPT had to choose shoes for them, too and the funny part is Bear does have a pair of yellow Crocs Charlie bought her she refuses to wear.

Bear — ChatGPT said Bear would be a pair of Timberlands because Timberlands represent someone who is strong, sturdy, dependable, protective, outdoorsy, and built to handle whatever comes their way.

It saw Bear as the kind of dog who has a solid presence. She’s not delicate or easily intimidated. She’s the type who could walk through anything, handle a little mud, and keep right on going.

ChatGPT said Timberlands fit because they’re known for being rugged and durable. They’re made for adventure. They’re practical, dependable, and built to last. It also saw Bear as protective and loyal, the kind of family member who may not need to be the center of attention but is always aware of what’s happening around her. Overall, ChatGPT said Bear would be a shoe representing strength, loyalty, durability, dependability, and a little bit of toughness.

What I Think About Bear– You know what? ChatGPT did pretty darn good with Bear. The outdoorsy part definitely caught my attention because Bear loves to lay outside. She would love outside if we would let her, and that’s just Bear.

She’s strong. She’s dependable. And protective? Oh my goodness, yes! Especially when it comes to Charlie. You cannot get between those two. Even with our new puppy Sandy, Bear is still Charlie’s baby. That relationship hasn’t changed.

And when ChatGPT said Bear is built to handle whatever comes her way, I think that’s especially true because Bear has been through some things. She’s lived through the loss of her mom and Sandy’s passing, and she’s still here.

She’s still part of our family, still doing what Bear does, and still being Charlie’s girl. She definitely has a solid presence. She’s loyal. She’s dependable. And she’s got just a little bit of tough in her. Actually, maybe more than a little bit!

Because Bear has no problem putting these other dogs in their place when she thinks they need to be reminded who’s boss. And that’s where I think Timberland makes sense. I would have never thought of Timberland for Bear.

Honestly, I had almost forgotten about that brand of shoe! And that’s funny because David has looked at Timberlands more times than not as a work shoe. They’re just more expensive than what we usually like to spend on work shoes.

But now that ChatGPT has said it… I can see Bear as a Timberland. Rugged. Strong. Dependable. Outdoorsy. Protective. Built to last. And definitely not afraid to get a little tough when somebody needs putting in their place. So, ChatGPT… You surprised me with this one, but I think you got Bear right.

Phoebe — ChatGPT said Phoebe would be a pair of Vans because Vans represent someone who is playful, independent, expressive, a little quirky, and completely comfortable being themselves.

It saw Phoebe as the kind of dog who has personality. She’s not necessarily trying to be the biggest or toughest dog in the family. Instead, she has her own way of doing things and her own little quirks that make everybody recognize her as Phoebe.

ChatGPT said Vans fit because they’re casual, fun, and individualistic. They’re the kind of shoes that don’t take themselves too seriously, but they still have a strong identity. It also said Phoebe would be the kind of “shoe” that can go from hanging around the house to getting into a little mischief without missing a beat. 😂 Overall, ChatGPT saw Phoebe as representing individuality, playfulness, personality, adaptability, and a little bit of quirkiness.

What I Think About Phoebe– You know what? ChatGPT did pretty good with my Phoebe. Phoebe can be clingy but more times than not she want’s to be left alone. She’s definitely independent. And expressive? Oh my gosh, yes!

She can be a little b.a….h when she wants to be, too. And I think that’s where the quirky part comes in. She is completely comfortable being herself. And personality? OMG, YES! Phoebe has a personality all her own.

When she wants to be left alone, she wants to be left alone. But she’s also a little skittish and scared sometimes, and I think that’s because someone may have hurt her before we got her from the shelter.

So there’s another side to Phoebe that ChatGPT couldn’t possibly know just from a personality description. She’s independent, but sometimes she’s clingy. She’s expressive. She’s adaptable. She’s quirky. She’s got individuality. And she has personality with a capital P! 😂

She loves David but is a pure momma’s girl and sometimes a Charlie or Granny Sherry girl as long as she can see me and that’s what makes my Phoebe my Phoebe. Now, would I have ever thought of a pair of Vans for her? Nope! That one surprised me.

Vans is another brand of shoe that I think Charlie has looked at before, but it’s not a brand we’ve actually purchased. And I’ll tell you something else I’m noticing as we go through these answers.

I am surprised only Renne got Converse! I really thought somebody in my family would end up being Converse. But you know what? That’s okay, too. That’s life. This isn’t about making ChatGPT pick the shoes we actually own. It’s about seeing what it comes up with when it looks at our personalities.

And sometimes it surprises me. Sometimes it’s wrong. And sometimes it makes me stop and say… “You know what? I never would have thought of that, but I can actually see it.” And Vans for Phoebe? I can see it.

Sandy — ChatGPT said Sandy would be a pair of Crocs because Crocs represent someone who is fun, adaptable, comfortable, playful, practical, and unapologetically themselves. It saw Sandy as the kind of dog who brings a little bit of chaos and a whole lot of personality into the family.

Crocs aren’t necessarily trying to look sophisticated or traditional. They’re different. They’re recognizable. And they have a personality all their own. ChatGPT said Crocs fit because they’re easygoing and adaptable.

You can wear them around the house, outside, running errands, getting wet, getting dirty, and just about anywhere else. They’re built for everyday life and don’t require you to take them too seriously.

It also saw Sandy as playful and curious, the kind of dog who wants to investigate everything and be part of whatever is happening. And just like Crocs can be customized and made your own, ChatGPT saw Sandy as having a personality that’s still developing and becoming her own as she settles into the Cates family.

Overall, ChatGPT said Sandy would represent playfulness, adaptability, comfort, curiosity, individuality, and a willingness to jump into whatever adventure comes next. Boy oh boy did they ever get that right. What do you think?

What I Think About Sandy– Okay, this one is hilarious. Because Bear Bear already has a pair of yellow Crocs. And let me tell you… Bear Bear refuses to wear them! Before you ask no, Bear can’t give them to Sandy because her feet make two of Bear’s little puppy feet!

But when it comes to the personality ChatGPT described? Oh, yes. Sandy is definitely fun and playful. Would I have picked Crocs for her? I’m not sure. But unapologetic? Absolutely! Sandy does what she wants, when she wants, and where she wants.

But she’s a puppy, so I guess that’s part of the job description. She definitely creates chaos. And she has a whole lot of personality. She is playful. She’s curious. And let me tell you something: Sandy doesn’t know what “no” means!

You can tell her no, and she just looks at you like, “That’s an interesting word. What does it mean?” Then she jumps right into whatever she was doing. She jumps into everything. But that is understandable because she is a puppy.

If there’s something happening, Sandy wants to be part of it. If there’s something she hasn’t investigated, she’s going to investigate it. If there’s something she probably shouldn’t be doing… That’s probably exactly what she’s going to do. Then just look at you and dare you to say something.

So while I’m still not sure I would have chosen Crocs for Sandy, I have to admit ChatGPT got the personality pretty darn close. She’s adaptable. She’s curious. She’s playful. She’s individualistic. She’s unapologetically Sandy.

And she’s definitely willing to jump into whatever adventure comes next. So, ChatGPT… I’ll give you this one. But I’m still laughing that you picked the exact shoe that Bear Bear already owns and refuses to wear!

Gunner — ChatGPT would pick: New Balance because he’s quiet, calm, dependable, understated, and comfortable staying in his own space. He’s not trying to be the loudest dog in the room.

He doesn’t need to be the center of attention. He has a peaceful presence and seems perfectly content to observe what’s happening around him. New Balance also fits because it’s a practical, comfortable, dependable shoe.

It’s not necessarily about showing off. It’s about having something that feels good, works well, and can be counted on. And there’s something else about Gunner that makes the choice work: he has his own quiet individuality.

He’s beautiful, especially with that gorgeous golden coloring, but he doesn’t need to demand attention to be noticed. He’s just Gunner. Quiet. Calm. Beautiful. A little reserved. And happy to stay to himself.

Gunner is our foster doggie, and we watch him for the airline stewardess David works with a couple times a year. He’s part of our family in his own special way. And although we couldn’t recover the original shoe ChatGPT had picked for Gunner, this fresh choice feels like a pretty good fit. I have to agree what do you think?

And Now the Big Question: What If Our Entire Family Were One Tennis Shoe?

After going through every person and every dog, I asked the biggest question of all: “If our entire family were one tennis shoe, what brand would we be—and why?” And this time, the answer surprised me.

The Cates Family — If the entire Cates family were one pair of tennis shoes, ChatGPT would choose Skechers. Why? Because there family isn’t defined by everybody being alike.

They’re defined by being comfortable enough to be ourselves while still showing up for one another. Skechers fit because they’re practical, dependable, comfortable, and made for everyday life—but they’re also adaptable.

They can be worn by different kinds of people for different reasons. They’re not trying to be the fanciest shoe in the store, and they don’t have to be. That’s our family and I wouldn’t change them for a million dollars.

David brings the dependability and practicality. He’s the person everyone can count on. ChatGPT says I bring the determination, resilience, family-centered heart, and the willingness to keep putting one foot in front of the other. That is more true than anyone knows.

Charlie brings the energy, competitiveness, creativity, technology, gaming, photography, boldness, and that “I’m going to do things my way” personality and again that is spot on and Charlie to a T.

Suzanne brings the warmth, genuineness, strength, and the memories that remain part of our family story. And there’s something especially fitting about Skechers because they were her favorite shoes. Telling me GOD had a hand in these choices.

Gerald brings strength, independence, toughness, and that down-to-earth determination that keeps him helping others even when life has become harder. Which is also true and he isn’t going to give up no, matter what life throws at him.

Debbie brings caring, loyalty, individuality, and the willingness to show up for the people she loves. Renee brings creativity, independence, unconventional thinking, and that unmistakable “I’m going to be myself” attitude.

And then there are the dogs. Bear brings loyalty, protection, strength, and that tough streak that keeps the other dogs in line. Phoebe brings individuality, quirkiness, independence, expressiveness, and plenty of personality—with a little clinginess and skittishness mixed in.

Sandy brings the puppy chaos! She’s curious, playful, unapologetic, adventurous, and apparently has never heard the word “no.” And Gunner brings the quiet, calm, beautiful presence—the one who doesn’t have to make a lot of noise to be part of the family.

Put all of that together and you don’t get a family that’s polished and perfect. You get a family that’s real. A family that’s been through loss. A family that has changed. A family with strong personalities.

A family that sometimes disagrees. A family that can make each other crazy. A family that can laugh together. A family that shows up when somebody needs help. And a family that keeps putting one foot in front of the other.

That’s why I think Skechers makes sense for the entire Cates family. They’re comfortable. They’re dependable. They’re practical. They’re made for everyday life. And most importantly… They keep you moving.

And maybe that’s the biggest thing about our family. We keep moving. Even when life changes. Even when somebody is gone. Even when somebody is struggling. Even when the road gets hard. We keep going.

And there’s one more little connection that makes this choice feel almost perfect. Skechers were Suzanne’s favorite shoes. So if the whole Cates family were one pair of shoes, having the family shoe be Skechers means that, in a funny little way, Suzanne gets to walk with all of us again.

Now It’s Your Turn!

After all of that, I want to hear from you. Did ChatGPT get my family right? Did it miss something? Did one of its choices make you laugh? Did one make you say, “Oh my goodness, that’s exactly right!”

And I especially want to know what you would have picked. If you were choosing a tennis shoe for David, what would you choose? What about me? Charlie? Suzanne? Gerald? Debbie? Renee? And what shoe would you give Bear, Phoebe, Sandy, and Gunner?

And then there’s the biggest question: If your entire family were one tennis shoe, what brand would you be? Don’t just think about the shoes you actually wear. Think about your personality.

Are you practical? Comfortable? Dependable? A little flashy? Built to last? Maybe you’re a bargain shoe from Walmart. Maybe you’re a pair of Skechers Go Walks. Maybe you’re Jordans.

Maybe you’re Converse. Maybe you’re Nike. Maybe you’re Adidas. Maybe you’re New Balance. Or maybe you’re something completely unexpected! Tell me what ChatGPT—or even your family—would choose for you!

Because you never know. You might learn something about yourself along the way. That’s what I love about these silly little questions. Sometimes we start with something as simple as: “What if I was a tennis shoe?”

And somehow we end up talking about the people we love, the things that make them unique, the memories we’ve shared, the things we’ve lost, and the things that keep us together.

That’s more than a shoe. That’s family. So grab your morning coffee or sweet tea, pull up a chair, and let’s have a little fun with another “What If I Was…” question. And remember, we’re not trying to solve the world’s problems. We’re just having a little fun.

Because sometimes a silly question can turn into a pretty interesting conversation. What if YOU were a tennis shoe? What brand would you be and why?

Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
