My dad, Suzzane and I hav e always been a avid book reader along with my Aunt and my mother in law and my friends which is why I was wondering about different genre of books when I came up with the what would my family be questions.
For me a good book can take you somewhere you’ve never been, introduce you to people who don’t really exist, and somehow make you feel like you know them. So for today’s “What If I Was…” question, I decided to ask ChatGPT something a little different.
We’ve already asked what we would be as colors, seasons, flowers, songs, places, and other things. But today, I wanted to know: What if I was a book? And not just any book. Today, we’re going to find out: What if I was a romance book?
I asked ChatGPT to choose a romance book for each member of our family based on what it knows about us, our personalities, our relationships, and the things I’ve shared. Because romance books are my favorite type of book to read.
If my dad had asked the question he would have asked about Western Books and TV Shows. If you were going to ask this question what genre of book would you have chosen and why?
Then I asked one more question: What would our entire family be if we were one romance book? Some of these choices I immediately understood. Some made me laugh. Some were books I had never heard of. And one choice turned out to have a very special meaning that ChatGPT could never have known when it made the selection. So let’s see what ChatGPT chose.

These aren’t books I’m recommending just because they are popular. These are books ChatGPT chose for the people in my family, and many of them are books I now want to read myself. So apparently, this “What If I Was…” question has also created a new reading list for me! Which is perfect for our 30 minutes of reading challenge you can join us in.
ChatGPT chose: The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks for me because ChatGPT said I remind them of a love story that isn’t just about romance; it’s about remembering, enduring, losing, loving, and continuing on. There is a deep emotional connection to family and the people who become part of my story. ChatGPT said The Notebook feels like me because my heart tends to hold onto people and memories.
My Notes It’s funny that ChatGPT picked The Notebook for me because that is one of my all-time favorite movies. And there is something else that makes this choice incredibly special. The Notebook was the very last movie Suzanne ever saw.
So when ChatGPT chose this book for me, it immediately became much more meaningful than simply being a romance book that fits my personality. I actually believe I already have the book. If I don’t, I plan on buying it because I definitely want it in my collection.
And I also want to let you know that The Notebook is the movie starring James Garner, Gena Rowlands, Ryan Gosling, and Rachel McAdams. James Garner and Gena Rowlands play the older Noah and Allie, while Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams play the younger couple.
If you’ve never seen the movie, OMG, you are missing out! It is one of those movies that stays with you. And for me, it will always have an extra special place in my heart because it was the last movie Suzanne ever watched. Not only that in a way the story reminds me of mine and David’s story.

If David Were a Romance Book ChatGPT chose: The Bridges of Madison County thsi book is written by Robert James Waller. Why ChatGPT chose it: David feels like a quieter, more complicated love story.
He’s not flashy. He’s not necessarily full of grand speeches. It’s about choices, responsibility, devotion, and the things people carry quietly inside themselves.
And David has a lot of things inside. There’s a maturity to this one that feels like David. Sometimes love isn’t about making the biggest declaration. Sometimes it’s about what a person chooses, what they carry, what they sacrifice, and what they don’t necessarily say out loud.
My Notes: I think that is a really good choice for David. I don’t think I’ve one hundred percent sat down and read The Bridges of Madison County, or watched the movie but I plan to one day because I’ve heard so many good things about it.
And yes, I believe the movie has Clint Eastwood in it. But when ChatGPT explained why it chose this book, I immediately understood. David really is a quieter, more complicated love story.

If Charlie Were a Romance Book ChatGPT chose: The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon Why ChatGPT chose it: Charlie needs something younger and more unexpected. This is a story about two people’s lives colliding and how one encounter can change the direction of a person’s life.
It fits Charlie’s independent, adventurous, figuring-it-out stage of life. Especially as he and Mikaela are figuring out their relationship and what comes next. Charlie is independent. He’s adventurous. He’s at that stage of life where he’s figuring out who he is, what he wants, where he’s going, and what relationships are going to mean to him as he grows.
My Notes: This is a book I’ve never heard of but it reminded me of a movie I think I’ve seen. But I really like the reason ChatGPT chose it. The idea of two people’s lives colliding and how that can change one person’s life really does make me think about Charlie and Mikaela as they try to figure out their relationship.
Charlie is definitely independent. He’s adventurous. And he’s at a stage of life where he’s figuring things out. Who he is. What he wants. Where he’s going. And what relationships are going to mean to him as he grows. So I’m definitely going to check this book out. And now I’m curious to see whether I think ChatGPT got this one right after I read it.

If Gerald Were a Romance Book: ChatGPT chose: The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion Why ChatGPT chose it: Gerald gets the romance with the humor. He’s never even had a girlfriend, so maybe that makes this choice even more interesting!
The Rosie Project is quirky, unconventional, and funny, with a lot of heart underneath the funny moments. It doesn’t follow the usual formula. And maybe that’s exactly why it fits Gerald.
If Gerald ever does find his own love story, I have a feeling it probably won’t be ordinary or predictable. It will probably be a little quirky. Just like him. Now, the question is do you think he will be able to find a girlfriend or not?
My Notes: This one made me think, Oh wow! Gerald has never even had a girlfriend, so giving him a romance book is kind of funny in itself. But then I thought about what ChatGPT said.
Quirky. Unconventional. Funny. And yes, Gerald is definitely quirky and unconventional. He can certainly be funny. So maybe this one really does fit him. And maybe when Gerald eventually does have his own romance story, it won’t look like everybody else’s.
Maybe it will be a little different. A little unexpected. And probably a little quirky. Just like Gerald. While allowing me to have piece of mind because he would have someone to take care of him.

If Debbie Were a Romance Book ChatGPT chose: Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. Why ChatGPT chose it: Debbie gets a story about strength, compassion, difficult circumstances, and loving someone even when you can’t control the outcome.
Sometimes we love people and want to fix everything for them. We want to make the hard things easier. We want to change the outcome. But we can’t always do that. Sometimes loving someone means being there through circumstances we can’t control. It’s emotional and complicated, but ultimately about how profoundly one person can affect another person’s life.
My Notes: I’ve watched Me Before You, but I’ve never read the book but I can definitely see why ChatGPT chose this one for Debbie her strength. Compassion. Difficult circumstances. And loving someone even when you can’t control the outcome.
Oh yes. Sometimes we love someone and want to fix everything for them. We want to make everything better. But we can’t always change the circumstances. Sometimes all we can do is love someone and be there. This is another book I want to read now, especially since I’ve already seen the movie.

If Renee Were a Romance Book: ChatGPT chose: One Day by David Nicholls. Why ChatGPT chose it: Renee gets a story about relationships that change over time. It’s about friendship, timing, growing up, changing, and the people who keep finding their way back into each other’s lives.
Not every important relationship is about instant fireworks. Sometimes people become important to us slowly. Sometimes circumstances change. Sometimes life takes people in different directions. And sometimes people find their way back into the story.
My Notes; This is another book I’ve never heard of or read. So apparently, I have a lot of new books to check out after asking ChatGPT this question! But I can see why it chose One Day for Renee.
Friendship. Timing. Growing up. Changing. Relationships that change over time. And people finding their way back into each other’s lives. That really does make sense. Not every relationship starts with fireworks. Sometimes people become important slowly. Sometimes life changes. And sometimes people find their way back into one another’s stories.

If Gunnar Were a Romance Book ChatGPT chose: A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron. Why ChatGPT chose it: Gunnar absolutely had to get a dog story! His isn’t about romantic love in the traditional sense.
It’s about unexpected love, loyalty, finding your people, and discovering where you belong. Sometimes the best love stories aren’t the ones we plan. They’re the ones that happen when someone—or in Gunnar’s case, a dog—comes into your life unexpectedly and somehow becomes part of your family and steals your heart. If only I could keep him.
My Notes: This was a movie, too, and I love anything about dogs, which my family watched together and we loved the movie and I love this explanation for Gunnar. Unexpected love. Loyalty.
Finding your people. Discovering where you belong. That is Gunnar for a T. His story isn’t about romantic love. It’s about finding the people who become your family and knowing where you belong. And I think that can be just as powerful as any romance story.

If Phoebe Were a Romance Book ChatGPT chose: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows Why ChatGPT chose it: Phoebe gets a warm, comforting story where relationships grow in unexpected places.
It’s about community, kindness, connection, and finding family in people you didn’t expect. That fits Phoebe beautifully. She is a rescue dog who found her way into our hearts.
And she’s not just loved by us. Everyone in this apartment complex loves her. Sometimes family doesn’t happen because you’re related by blood. Sometimes family happens because a little soul comes into your life and you simply can’t imagine your world without them anymore.
My Notes I really like this choice for Phoebe. She is a rescue dog, and she found her way into our hearts. But she didn’t just become part of our family. Everyone in this apartment complex and even David’s mom and her neighbors along with my sister and her grandkids loves Phoebe.
So the words community, kindness, connection, and finding family in people you didn’t expect really fit. Sometimes family isn’t about blood. Sometimes family is the people—or the animals—who find their way into your heart. And Phoebe definitely did that.

Because of Winn-Dixie is about how one dog can bring people together and create connections that weren’t there before. That’s Sandy. She didn’t come into our lives with a plan to change anything.
She just arrived. And suddenly there was another personality, another set of paws, and another little heart to love. Sometimes a new family member doesn’t replace anything. They simply add another chapter. That’s what Sandy has done.
My Notes: This one is Sandy all the way. And I think David and I’ve seen Because of Winn-Dixie as a movie. Sandy is a new chapter. She came into the family and changed things simply by being there.
That’s exactly what she did. She didn’t replace anybody. She didn’t erase any of the chapters that came before her. She simply added another chapter. Another personality. Another little heart. Another set of paws. And another dog to love. That is Sandy.

If Bear Were a Romance Book ChatGPT chose: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein Why ChatGPT chose it: Bear gets the emotional, fiercely loyal love story. It’s about protection, love, family, loss, and staying beside the people you belong to.
Bear is fiercely loyal. He’s protective. And he stands beside the people he loves. Sometimes love isn’t about what you say. Sometimes love is simply staying. Bear knows how to do that.
My Notes– Yes. I can definitely see why ChatGPT chose this one for Bear. The Art of Racing in the Rain is a movie, my family has watched and it is a tearjerker. The emotional part makes sense.
The fiercely loyal part makes sense. The protection, family, loss, and staying beside the people you belong to all make sense. And Bear definitely stands beside the people he belongs to.
Especially Charlie. That is something I notice about him. Bear is protective, and he’s loyal. Sometimes you don’t need somebody to say a single word. You just need them to stay beside you. And Bear does that.

What If Our Whole Family Were a Romance Book? Now we get to my favorite question. I asked ChatGPT: If our entire family were one romance book, what book would we be? At first, ChatGPT considered The Bridges of Madison County.
But then it changed its mind. And I’m glad it did. ChatGPT chose: The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom Why ChatGPT chose it: The entire family deserves a story that isn’t about two people falling in love.
Your family would be The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom not because the story itself is your family’s story, but because of its central idea: our lives are connected in ways we don’t always understand, and the people we love leave pieces of themselves in us.
That feels especially right for your family because your family story includes people who are here, people who have joined along the way, pets who became family, and people whose absence doesn’t mean they’re forgotten.
They’re still part of the story. They’re still part of you. Our family isn’t a perfect love story. It’s a real one. It’s about loving people through every chapter.

My Notes: I haven’t heard of The Five People You Meet in Heaven before. So yes, this is another book I’m going to have to check out. But I really like why ChatGPT chose it for our family.
Our lives are connected in ways we don’t always understand. The people we love leave pieces of themselves in us. And that is so true. Our family isn’t just the people who are here today.
It’s the people who came before us. It’s the people who are here now. It’s the people who came into our lives unexpectedly. It’s the people who became family even though they weren’t necessarily born into it. And it’s the people we have loved who are no longer physically here.
They’re still part of our story. They’re still part of us. And that is one reason this book feels like such a perfect choice. Especially because of Suzanne. She may not be here physically, but she is still part of our family story.
She is still part of our memories. She’s still part of who we are. And that’s what I love about the idea behind this book. The people we love don’t simply disappear from our story because their chapter ended.
We carry them with us. We remember them. We tell their stories. We love them. And we keep writing. Our family isn’t a perfect love story. It’s not supposed to be. It’s a real story created by people who love each other.
There are happy chapters. There are difficult chapters. There are chapters that make us laugh. There are chapters that break our hearts. There are people who come into our story unexpectedly.
There are people we never wanted to lose. There are new chapters we never expected to write. And there are still plenty of blank pages ahead. That’s why I think The Five People You Meet in Heaven may be the perfect book for our family. Not because we’re perfect. Not because everything always works out. But because love connects us.

I wanted to share what I learned about my family through GPT. I started this morning by asking ChatGPT one simple question: What if I were a romance book? Then I asked it what if each member of my family was and then use as a whole family.
Instead, I ended up with a whole new reading list.
Some of these books I’ve read. Some I’ve only seen as movies. Some I’d never heard of. And some are books I’m now determined to find and add to my collection. But what I really loved about this question was that it wasn’t just about books.
It was about people. It made me think about what makes each person in our family unique. It made me think about the relationships we have. It made me think about the dogs who became family. It made me think about people we’ve loved and lost.
And it reminded me that every family has a story. Sometimes it’s funny. Sometimes it’s complicated. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking. Sometimes it’s beautiful. But every family has one. And our family story is still being written.

When we created our family romance-book questionnaire, somehow we accidentally left Suzanne out. I couldn’t leave her out, so I asked ChatGPT what romance book it thought Suzanne would be.
The answer was The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. At first, I asked why ChatGPT chose that particular book for Suzanne. The answer was that it pictured a romance that was deeply emotional, sentimental, and centered around a love that lasts through a lifetime.
And you know what? ChatGPT got this one right.
Suzanne was deeply emotional and incredibly sentimental. She was the kind of person who could cry at the drop of a hat. She felt things deeply, and she loved deeply. But there is another reason this choice means even more to me.
The Notebook was the very last movie Suzanne ever watched with her big sister from Big Brothers Big Sisters. So when ChatGPT chose that book for Suzanne, neither of us could have known just how meaningful that choice would be.
A love that lasts a lifetime. That is Suzanne. Even though Suzanne isn’t here with me anymore, my love for her hasn’t disappeared. If anything, I think losing someone you love teaches you just how enormous love can be.
I love Suzanne more than life itself. So if ChatGPT were asked, “What romance book would Suzanne be?” I think The Notebook is a beautiful answer. Not simply because it is a love story.
But because Suzanne’s story reminds me that some love stories don’t end when someone leaves this world. Some loves last forever. And Suzanne will always be one of mine and her friends and family who miss her just as much as I do.
