Life is funny because when I first talked to Charlie and David about helping me make a Denton’s Scary Chairy Orchard for Denton’s 31 Days of Halloween they weren’t to keen on helping me. Then I asked Bradley if Ghost would be able to help me design my chair and before I knew it Charlie and Bradley become excited and we’ve gone from one chair to 2.
Before I know what was happening Bradley and Charlie started talking about the designs we can do on our chairs. I just hope they know what there doing and someone can draw because they came up with some pretty elaborate ideas but if they work out the way I hope our chairs will be amazing.
Now I’m sitting here thinking… “Okay, boys. I guess we’re making two chairs!” 😂 And honestly? I couldn’t be happier. Because this is exactly what I hoped would happen when I first saw Denton’s Scary Chairy Orchard.
I wanted something that would get our family creating together. Something where we could take an ordinary old object and turn it into something completely different. Something that would give us a reason to laugh, work together, disagree about our ideas, change our minds, and hopefully end up with something we’re proud of. And now Bradley and Charlie are already thinking about what their chairs could become.
There’s just one little problem. We don’t have two chairs yet. So now I need to get David to take me to Goodwill. I asked on Facebook for old chairs and no, one responded and now I need to ask my family if they have chairs we can have. Or we’re going chair hunting!
And I’m actually excited about this part. We’re not looking for beautiful chairs. We’re not looking for expensive chairs. We’re looking for the kind of chair that makes you stop and think: “Hmmmm…I wonder what we could do with that?”
According to the official Scary Chairy guidelines, chairs need to be made from materials such as wood, plastic, or metal, and they need to be appropriate for outdoor display. So we’re going treasure hunting. And who knows what we’ll find?
I can’t wait to see what we can turn into something new? Which is the part I love most. I want these chairs to be about creativity and repurposing. As well as allowing us to bond and create new memories and to get off our phones for a while and talk.
Maybe we’ll find something at Goodwill. Maybe we’ll discover something at a thrift store. Maybe someone has something sitting in their garage that they don’t want anymore. Maybe there’s an old Halloween decoration that has been sitting in a box for years.
Maybe someone has leftover craft supplies. Artificial flowers. Garden decorations. Plastic toys. Ribbon. Pieces of wood. Metal pieces. Something completely random. If you think it might belong on a crazy Halloween chair, we want to hear about it! One person’s junk might be exactly what one of our chairs needs.
Now I want to hear from you. Since Bradley and Charlie are already coming up with ideas, I want to open this project up to our Greatful Moments readers too. What would YOU turn an old chair into? Would you make it spooky? Funny? Weird? Cute?
Would you create a character? A creature? A Halloween scene? Would you use things that normally would have gone into the trash? And if you have something you think we could use, tell us about it! We’re going to be sharing this adventure as we go, so maybe something one of our readers suggests will actually end up on one of these chairs.

The official Scary Chairy Orchard opens October 1 and will be displayed through October 31 at the Denton City Hall courtyard. Be sure to read the official rules before you begin so your chair meets the requirements for display.
I don’t know what these two boys are going to come up with. Actually, that’s not entirely true. I’ve already heard enough ideas to know that these chairs are probably going to be something! 😂
And that’s what makes this so much fun. We’re not buying something off a shelf. We’re not ordering a kit. We’re starting with an old chair and seeing where our imaginations take us. And now we have two projects instead of one.
Two chairs. Two sets of ideas. Two opportunities for Bradley and Charlie to create something completely different. And This Is Only the Beginning We still have a lot to figure out.
First, we need the chairs. Then we’ll need supplies. Then we’ll have to decide which ideas we’re actually going to use. Then Bradley and Charlie have to build these things. And eventually, we’ll take them to Denton and put them into the Scary Chairy Orchard.
I’m already imagining what these two are going to come up with. And knowing Bradley and Charlie… and I’m sure David will chime in to. I have a feeling these chairs are going to be interesting. 😂
