David and I’ve been watching more mystery shows on TV but there hasn’t been any new shows lately and you can only watch the same shows so many time. Which is why I was excited to find Treachery In Death by J.D. Robb in a sack of books Lisa Marie Bird loaned me.
One thing I wanted to point out is there is 32 books in this series which will give David and I plenty or reading time for our 30 minute reading challenge. For someone that believes there is no, shame in asking for help David did need it as times when reading the book but that was okay because it helping him learn to read.
With Christma and Halloween around the corner I can’t wait to purchase more books in the series for David. Because these books are the perfect books to read on our date-nites when we don’t go out somewhere.
Treachery in Death is the 32nd book in J. D. Robb’s In Death series, and once again Detective Eve Dallas finds herself dealing with a case that reaches much deeper than it first appears. One ting I wanted to share about Treachery in Death is it is the 32nd book in the In Death series, the mystery itself can be followed without reading all the previous books.
However, readers who are new to the series may miss some of the character history and relationships that make Eve, Peabody, Roarke, and the rest of the team so much fun to follow. So even though we read this book I wish we had read them in order which I plan on doing soon.
In this story Peabody is getting her chance to take the lead on a case involving the senseless murder of an elderly grocery owner. Three stoned punks killed him for nothing more than kicks and snacks. This is Peabody’s first case as the primary detective, and Eve knows she has learned from one of the best.
But Peabody soon finds herself in a completely different kind of trouble. After a hard workout, Peabody is alone in the locker room when she hears the door open. She hides inside a shower stall and overhears two fellow officers having a conversation. She can’t see them, but she hears enough to realize that something is very wrong.
These aren’t just officers who have made a mistake. They are corrupt, and their corruption goes much deeper than Peabody could have imagined. Murder is involved, and the people responsible are willing to do whatever it takes to keep their secrets from coming to light.
Peabody immediately calls her live-in boyfriend, EDD Detective Ian McNab, to come get her. From there, she takes what she has learned to her partner and commanding officer, Lieutenant Eve Dallas, and Eve’s husband, Roarke.
Before long, Eve’s home becomes headquarters for an operation involving Commander Whitney, IAB Lieutenant Don Webster, Captain Feeney of EDD, Roarke, and others who have to figure out exactly who can be trusted.
And that becomes one of the biggest questions in the entire investigation: Who can you trust when the people you’re investigating are police officers themselves? That is one major question you will find yourself asking as you read the book.
Eve believes Renee Oberman’s office may be bugged, which creates another problem. Can EDD and Roarke work their magic and gather the evidence they need without tipping off the people they’re investigating?
And perhaps the biggest question of all is what happens when the people who are supposed to uphold the law are the ones breaking it. No, I’m not going to tell you because I believe you need to read the book to find out.
I found Treachery in Death to be a suspenseful mystery with plenty of interesting developments.David and I especially enjoyed watching the characters deal with their own pasts while trying to figure out the difference between the people who do the right thing and those who believe they are entitled to whatever they want.
Dallas is strong, independent, and strategic. She knows how to use her anger as a source of determination when she believes something needs to be made right. Peabody is diligent and empathetic, but this case also gives her another opportunity to see that she is stronger and more capable than she sometimes believes.
And, of course, we get the EDD crew and Roarke doing what they do best—using their particular talents and resources to help Eve put the pieces together. I don’t want to give away the secrets because discovering them is part of what makes this book fun to read.
There are plenty of questions along the way, and I kept wondering how Eve and the others were going to prove what they knew without compromising the investigation. I can’t wait to see if there will be more books in the series.
And Then There’s That Cover… Which I have to talk about the because I really love it. The turquoise background with those big red J. D. Robb letters immediately catches your attention. Then you get down to those gorgeous red stiletto heels.
And then you notice the butcher knife. A butcher knife sharper than just about anything I have sitting in my kitchen, complete with a lock on it. The shoes and the knife certainly make you wonder what the three have in common, and that alone makes you want to open the book and find out.
I honestly thought this one might keep me up at night, but thankfully, it didn’t. It’s suspenseful, but it didn’t leave me lying awake worrying about what was going to happen next. And I’m certainly not going to tell you the secrets!
If you want to know how Eve, Peabody, Roarke, McNab, Feeney, Whitney, and the rest of the team handle corrupt cops who are willing to kill to protect themselves, you’ll have to pick up Treachery in Death and read it for yourself.
This is another enjoyable installment in the In Death series, especially if you’ve been following Eve and Peabody’s relationship as partners and watching Peabody continue to grow into her own as a detective which she is doing.
If you’re already reading the In Death series, this is one you’ll want to add to your reading list.
