Today’s Down-Home Cooking: Sausage Pizza Day

When I was in high school, pizza was one of those foods that always sounded good to me. Even now, when I think about making pizza at home, it brings back memories of those days. And the other night, we decided to make biscuit pizzas right here at home! This is something I’ve made with both Charlie and Suzzane and it always let’s us create new memories as well as relieve memories from times in the past when we’ve made Biscuit Pizza’s.

My family loves making biscuit pizzas because everybody can make their own. You don’t have to make one big pizza and hope everybody likes the same toppings. Instead, you can open a can of Pillsbury biscuits or Grands biscuits, put out the pizza sauce and cheese, and let everybody make dinner their own way.

I could have sausage and cheese. The next time, I might want a meat lovers pizza. Or maybe I would just want cheese because sometimes simple is best. Charlie could have cheeseburger pizza. David could have his meat lovers pizza with mushrooms. And Gerald? Well, if he doesn’t want pizza, he can have his burritos or whatever leftovers we have in the refrigerator.

That is the wonderful thing about making your own pizzas. Everybody gets something they enjoy, and Mom doesn’t have to be a short-order cook all evening and in our home its David that doesn’t have to become a short order cook although, Gerald might try and turn David into one.

The nice thing is when your making pizza’s for your family you don’t have to use biscuits, either! You can buy refrigerated pizza dough, prepared pizza crusts, or whatever you find at the grocery store. Use what works for your family and your budget. You don’t have to make everything from scratch to make a meal special.

I also like the idea of turning pizza day into a family movie day. Let everybody choose their toppings, get the pizzas into the oven, pick out a favorite movie, and settle in together. If you have children, let them help with the toppings and make their own little creations. Just have an adult handle the oven and hot pans.

And if you are planning Sunday dinner and having company over, remember that it doesn’t have to be an elaborate meal. You don’t have to spend all day in the kitchen trying to impress everybody. Sometimes the best memories come from something as simple as homemade pizza, a movie, and everybody gathered together.

So today, why not celebrate Sausage Pizza Day? Make biscuit pizzas, roll out some pizza dough, or use a prepared crust. Put out the sauce, cheese, sausage, mushrooms, and whatever other toppings your family enjoys. Make it fun. Make it easy. And most of all, enjoy the time you spend together. That’s how we do things here at GreatfulMoments.com, where we believe in being Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed.
