For me a home is so much more than the walls that surround us. A home is not just the furniture we choose, the decorations we hang, or the address written on a piece of mail. A home is built from the moments we share, the stories we tell, and the memories we carry with us long after the years have passed.
When I think about what truly makes a home, I don’t think about perfect rooms or everything being in its place. I think about the sound of laughter coming from the kitchen, the smell of a favorite meal cooking on the stove, and the quiet moments when everyone gathers together after a long day. That includes our dogs.
Some of my families favorite memories are not the big celebrations or expensive moments. They are the ordinary days that seemed simple at the time but became the stories we still remember. For my family more times than not that might be sitting around the table sharing a meal. Or a child running through the house with a smile on their face.
It could be a holiday tradition that started years ago and continues because someone said, “Let’s do this again next year.” Some of those moments may have come from mine or David’s childhood or even Suzzane’s that we’ve begun to use with Charlie as we create our new memories with him. For my family those are the moments that turn a house into a home.
Our home holds pieces of the people who have walked through its doors. It holds the photographs on the walls, the handwritten notes tucked away in drawers, the recipes passed down from one generation to the next, and the little reminders of the people we love. Sometimes we don’t realize we are making memories while they are happening.
We are simply living our lives. We are making dinner, helping with homework, celebrating birthdays, comforting someone who is hurting, or enjoying a quiet evening together. But years later, those are the moments we treasure. The truth is, the memories that make a home are not always the ones we planned. They are the ones that happen naturally. They are found in the everyday moments when love is present.
A home is where we learn, grow, forgive, laugh, and love. It is where we create traditions and where our stories begin. It is where we gather together and where we remember those who are no longer sitting beside us but will always have a place in our hearts. The walls of a home may change. Families may grow and move into different seasons of life. But the memories remain. Because in the end, a home is not measured by what we own. It is measured by what we have loved.
Those memories are the pieces of our lives that stay with us forever. They remind us of where we came from, who walked beside us, and how blessed we are for every moment we were given. A home is made of love. And the memories we create are what make it last. Come and share one of your families favorite traditions with us.
Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed
Thank you,
