When talking to Charlie and David more times than not the conversation turns to cars and what they would like to have or to do to there cars. Sometimes this is the question that make me go, “Huh?” because it isn’t aren’t really about the answer its about the conversation they’re having while spending time together.
Sometimes those question takes you somewhere you didn’t expect. So here’s today’s question:
If you had to choose between a Dodge Charger and a Ford Mustang, which one would you choose? Why?
For our family, that question brings back a lot of memories. When Suzanne was alive, she always wanted the Dodge Charger that Dom drove in The Fast and the Furious because she didn’t think she would be able to afford a black Cadilac Escalade and neither would I. Even though I would have tried to get her anything she wanted. And honestly, I understand why. That is a beautiful car.
There was even a time when I had hoped I would be able to leave Suzanne’s services in a Dodge Charger like Dom’s from The Fast & the Furious. It would have been such a special moment, knowing how much she loved that car. But it didn’t work out that way. The LORD and Suzzane had other plans for me that day.
Instead, I was able to leave in a 1964½ Mustang. And that just happened to be my dream car. A 1964½ Mustang is the car I ‘ve always wanted, and someday I’m going to own a Candy Apple Red Mustang with a white racing strip. You just wait and see and no, it isn’t going to be a Hot Wheel car like David and Charlie think.
If you’re asking me to choose between a Mustang and a Charger, you already know where my heart is going. Give me the Mustang. But then there’s Charlie. If you ask Charlie which one he would choose, he would pick the Charger hands down. There wouldn’t even be much of a discussion. And honestly, I think David would probably choose the Charger too.
David loves that car more than life itself. But if you really made him choose between the two, I think he would choose the 1964½ Mustang because he knows how much I love it. David is the kind of person who would want to make me happy. So even if the Charger is his favorite, I think he would look at that Mustang and say, “That’s the one she wants.”
And then there’s another Mustang sitting right in our family story. Charlie’s grandmother has a Mustang in her garage down on her property on Wall Street, and they’re getting ready to sell it. Charlie would give just about anything for that car. So apparently the Mustang versus Charger debate isn’t quite as simple as I thought.
Suzanne loved the Charger. Charlie wants the Charger. David loves the Charger. But there’s a Mustang sitting in the family that Charlie would love to have. And I have a dream Mustang of my own. Funny how one question about cars can bring up so many memories. For me, cars aren’t just about horsepower, how fast they go, or what they look like.
Sometimes a car becomes connected to a person. A favorite movie. A dream. A goodbye. A memory. Or something you’ve wanted for years and still hope you’ll have someday. That’s what makes these questions fun. You start with something as simple as Mustang or Charger? And before you know it, you’re remembering the people you love, the things they dreamed about, and the things you still dream about yourself.
So now it’s your turn. If you had to choose between a Dodge Charger and a Ford Mustang, which would you choose—and why? Would you choose the powerful, classic look of the Charger? Or would you take the Mustang? And if you could have your dream version of either one, which year and model would you choose?
For me, there’s really no question. I’ll take my 1964½ Mustang. And someday, I hope I’ll finally have one sitting in my driveway.
Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
