Putting It in the Lord’s Hands
It’s Sunday morning, and before the day began I was already working on pitches for the Holiday’s and Charlie’s Birthday. Now, I’m sitting here looking around at everything that needs to be done and wondering, “Am I really going to get all of this finished today?”
I’ve got new content to work on, (check it’s done), birthday plans to think about (check there done and so much more), Christmas Gift Guide posts to get ready ( which will be the next thing I work on), reviews to write ( they are done to), companies to pitch ( done as well), and several new series we’re working on (done)as we get ready to celebrate some very special birthdays.
And my goal? I’d really like to be done by 3:00. We’ll see how that goes. But today, I’m trying not to worry too much about it. I’m putting it in the Lord’s hands. The kitchen is done and dinner has been taken out. Charlie is up and the dogs are playing and I have one more post and then I’m done for the day.
David worked another crazy-long day yesterday. He almost didn’t get home until after 8:00 at night. I wasn’t feeling very good and had a terrible headache. I didn’t even watch a movie last night, which tells you I really wasn’t feeling like doing much of anything. Then David stopped at Walmart and picked up Hot Dogs for dinner then he came home and made us hot dogs.
It wasn’t anything fancy. But sometimes those simple things mean more than anything else. Someone you love walks through the door after a long day, sees that you’re not feeling well, and makes sure you have something hot to eat. That’s love. And I’m grateful for it. Even though he forgot my Candy but did offer to go back and get it for me which I wouldn’t let him do.
This morning, Charlie got up and swept my room and the bathroom. For those who know Charlie, you understand why that made me smile. There have been plenty of mornings when getting him motivated to do anything wasn’t exactly easy. But today, he saw I was working and he got up and helped me.
And with his driver’s-license test coming up this week, I’m already thinking about how quickly this young man has grown. Nineteen years ago, I couldn’t have imagined sitting here talking about driver’s tests, birthdays, video games, Christmas gifts and all the things that come with having a grown son. Time really does fly.
So, yes, there will be plenty of prayers going up this week. And as I sit here writing this, the doggies are all laying down and being good. That might sound like a little thing. But if you’ve ever had a house full of dogs, you know that a quiet dog is a blessing and its something I’m grateful for.
For the moment, everyone is settled. The television is playing in the background. The house is quiet. And I’m taking a moment to breathe. Dinner? That’s Another Story I took hamburger meat out yesterday. That was as far as I’ve gotten with today’s dinner plans.
God only knew what I was going to cook. And honestly, I just don’t feel like cooking today. Maybe I’ll find inspiration later. Maybe we’ll make something simple. Maybe someone else will have an idea. Then I went downstairs to get something to eat and the dishwasher had been loaded and I took Hamburger Helper out for dinner which Gerald helped me find.
I’m learning that not every detail has to be figured out at noon. Sometimes you just take the next step. I’ve got a lot I want to accomplish today. But I also know that I can’t control everything. I can’t control how quickly the work gets finished. I can’t control what happens this week. I can’t control everything going on with friends and family. And I certainly can’t control how quickly my children grow up.
What I can do is wake up, do what I can, love my family, pray for the people who need prayer, and trust God with the rest. So today, I’m putting it in the Lord’s hands. If I get everything finished by 3:00, wonderful. If I don’t, there is always tomorrow. The important things aren’t always the things sitting on my to-do list.
Sometimes the important things are a husband who comes home and makes hot dogs when you’re not feeling well. A son who gets up and cleans your room. Dogs laying quietly beside you. A television playing in the background. A quiet Sunday morning. And the reminder that even when you don’t know exactly how everything is going to work out, God does.
Today, I’m also thinking about some friends and family members who are going through difficult things. I don’t know everything each person is facing, and I don’t need to. God knows. So I’m asking Him to be with each person who needs comfort, strength, healing, wisdom, peace or simply a reminder that they aren’t walking through their situation alone.
And if you need prayer today, please let me know. You don’t have to tell me everything. You can simply say, “Please pray for me,” and I’ll know what you mean. I’ll add you to my prayers. And if you’re reading this on a Sunday morning, afternoon or evening, I hope you take a few minutes today to stop, breathe and remember the blessings sitting right in front of you.
Even on the days when life feels overwhelming, there is usually something we can be grateful for. Today, I’m grateful for my family. I’m thankful for the little things. And I’m blessed to be sitting here, putting another day in the Lord’s hands.
