Oklahoma Sooners Boomer Warm Pal: A Soft Reminder of Suzzanne

This morning I want to share something that is much more than just another product review for me. When I first saw the Oklahoma Sooners Boomer Warm Pal, I honestly wasn’t sure what kind of animal he was. But I knew exactly who he reminded me of.

You might be wondering, “Glenda, you live in Texas. Why aren’t you talking about the Dallas Cowboys?” Well, anyone who knows me knows that I don’t follow sports. Not football. Not basketball. Not baseball. Really, sports of any kind. Although back in the day when we had true #DallasCowboys like Troy Ackman and his Coach I could understand why people where #fans but not now.

But there is one team that will always have a special place in my heart — the Oklahoma Sooners. And that is because of Suzanne.

Right before Suzanne passed away, she told me that when she finished her time in the Army as a cook, she wanted to go to the University of Oklahoma and become an OU Sooner. She wanted to become a kindergarten Christian teacher. She was following a dream, and in many ways she was following in the footsteps of my Uncle Chuck and my dad.

So when I saw this little Warm Pal wearing his red Oklahoma Sooners shirt with the number one, I knew immediately that he belonged in our family. I could see him being a wonderful remembrance gift for David, but I also immediately thought about my best friend Debbie’s husband, Curtis, because he is a diehard OU Sooner, too.

And then I held him. Oh my goodness, he is so soft and furry! I wish you could see his little white hands and those big blue eyes. They are so pretty. I already know he’s going to look beautiful sitting on my OU memorial shelf. But what makes him even more special to me is knowing that he isn’t something I will simply put on a shelf and look at. He is something I can actually use.

On the days when I’m missing Suzanne especially badly, I can pick him up and hold him close. And because he’s a Warm Pal, he can be heated in the microwave for warm snuggles or cooled in the freezer when you need a refreshing chill. I can already see how useful that could be on those days when my shoulder is bothering me. And I’m sure David is going to appreciate him when his knees are bothering him. He’s also infused with lavender, which makes him especially nice for those evenings when we’re having trouble settling down and getting some sleep.

Now, before you start your Christmas shopping, there is something I want to point out. This is not a child’s toy. I think that’s important because when you first see a soft, furry character like this, you might automatically think of buying it for a child. But I really see this as a gift for an adult, teenager, college student, grandparent, spouse, sports fan, or someone who could use a little comfort.

The Oklahoma Sooners Boomer Warm Pal is $32.95. And I’m going to be completely honest with you. If I were shopping for Christmas and $32.95 was all I had available for one person’s gift, I might stop and think about it. Would I want to spend the entire amount on a Warm Pal and simply hand someone a stuffed animal and say, “Merry Christmas”? Probably not.

And if I were buying this for myself, I can’t honestly say that $32.95 is an amount I would normally spend on a stuffed animal. But this isn’t really just a stuffed animal. That’s what changed my mind about him. I can see us using him 365 days a year — probably 24/7!

David could use him when his knees are bothering him. I could use him when my shoulder is acting up. Charlie could pick him up and use him, too. And because he’s something that can be warmed or cooled, he’s something our whole family can share. That’s what I like about him. He doesn’t have to belong to just one person.

One day he can be sitting on my shelf reminding me of Suzanne. The next day David can be using him. And another day someone else in the family can grab him when they need a little warmth, comfort, or relief. So when you’re looking at the $32.95 price tag, I think it’s important to look at what you’re actually getting and how often it can be used, rather than thinking of him as simply a stuffed animal.

For our family, I think he has the potential to become one of those things that gets passed around the house all year long. And that’s a lot different from buying a toy that gets played with for a few days and then forgotten. For me, though, there is still another reason this little Sooner means so much.

On the days when I’m missing Suzzane especially badly, I can pick him up and hold him close. Sometimes a product comes into your home and becomes much more than a product. Sometimes it becomes a hug. And I think that’s exactly what this little Sooner is going to be for me.

I sure wish they made one for the LA Lakers for Charlie, because I know he would love having one of his own. But until they do, I’m claiming this little Sooner for our family. Although I have already identified one problem. I’m going to have to hide him from the dogs!

Because the minute they see something this soft and furry sitting around the house, they’re probably going to decide that this isn’t Mom’s Warm Pal at all. They’re going to think it’s their new toy. And I’m not taking any chances even though there are a lot of others I would like to have and Santa, David or Charlie could bring me them but I’m still not giving them to the dogs.

So for now, Boomer is going to have a special place on my OU memorial shelf — right where I can see those big blue eyes and remember my sweet Suzzane and the dreams she carried in her heart. I hope you will take the time to check out Warm Pals as your doing your Christmas Shopping.

I plan on taking Sant and Mrs.Claus there own Warm Pals when I go to help Charlie load the SLEIGH. Because I bet he ends up hurting at the end of the night from the cold weather. Plus, Mrs. Claus can cuddle up with her Warm Pal as she waits for Santa to return.
