NASSP Reacts to New Executive Order to Combat Firearms Threats

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) issued the following statement on today’s actions to reduce gun violence from the Biden Administration:

“The Biden Administration’s focus on combating emerging firearms threats and improving active shooter drills is a step in the right direction for school safety,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “These critical measures will provide valuable resources and guidance to school leaders. However, we urge Congress to build on this momentum by investing in mental health resources and educator professional development to help prevent and heal from gun violence, which requires the commitment of a long-term investment. A comprehensive approach is essential to create truly safe and supportive learning environments.”

“As school leaders, we appreciate the administration’s efforts to improve active shooter drills,” said Michelle Kefford, a member of the Principal Recovery Network and principal of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. “This guidance will help all educators conduct more effective and age-appropriate drills while minimizing potential trauma to students and staff and ensuring drills are modified to best support those with specific and special needs. Coupled with additional funding and measures to address new firearms threats, these changes empower educators and law enforcement professionals to work in partnership for the implementation of all school safety initiatives.”

Representatives from NASSP and the Principal Recovery Network are attending the announcement of the executive order, highlighting the commitment to including school leader voice in recovery and prevention efforts.
