As I begin my morning I thought I would bring back our What If Questions and ask ChatGPT this morning what if my family was a song? Then again if you know my family, we wouldn’t be just one song. We would probably be an entire playlist and the band too.
Every person in my family has a different personality, a different story, different memories, and a different place in my heart. Some people bring laughter. Some bring steadiness. Some bring a little chaos. Some carry memories that reach all the way back through our family history.
And then there are the people who may not be physically beside us anymore but are still very much part of our story. So, as part of my “What If I Was…?” series, I decided to ask a fun question: If my family was a song, what would each of us be? And because music is even better when you can actually hear it, I’m going to add a YouTube video for each song so you can listen along with us. So turn up the volume, grab a cup of coffee or sweet tea, and join me on the porch as we meet my family through music.
Me — ChatGPT choose “The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert “The House That Built Me” feels like the right choice. Because so much of who I am has been built by the people and experiences that have been part of my life. But the funny thing is as much as I love Miranda Lambert I couldn’t remember this song so I had to sit down and listen to it this morning.
My family and my childhood. The places I’ve lived. The people I’ve loved. The people I’ve lost including Suzzane and my parents. The memories I’ve collected. The recipes we’ve made. The traditions we’ve passed down. The ordinary days that didn’t seem important at the time but somehow became the memories I treasure most.
I’ve always been someone who holds onto those things. Maybe that’s why I love telling family stories. I’m not just writing about what happened. I’m trying to preserve pieces of our lives. Because someday, those little stories may be the things somebody else wishes they could remember.
The funny part as I sat and listend to the song I knew it and like her I would like to go back to my old home one more time because Sandy and Lucy is buried in that yard.

David — ChatGPT choose “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers
David gets “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers. This was another song I hadn’t heard of but once I listened to this song it made me smile because it fits his steady, dependable side. As it played the chorus I new it and even found myself singing along to the song.
If you know anything about David you know he is the kind of person who keeps going. He gets up and he goes to work. He does what needs to be done. He keeps showing up. There’s something about this song that says, I’m going to keep going, and I’m going to be there. And sometimes that’s what love looks like.
It isn’t always some huge romantic gesture. Sometimes it’s simply having someone beside you who keeps showing up through all the ordinary days. The good ones. The hard ones. The busy ones. The exhausting ones. The days when life doesn’t go according to plan. That’s David. He’s part of the rhythm of my life.
Charlie —ChatGPT choose “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts Life is funny when I think of Rascal Flatts I think of the song from Cars. I wasn’t sure I knew this song but as soon as it began playing I knew it was perfect for Charlie because the song reminds me of a mother’s song for her son.
I’ve watched Charlie grow up. I’ve watched him graduate young, start working, develop his interests, and begin figuring out what comes next. And that’s one of those things nobody really prepares you for as a parent. You spend years helping your child grow.
You teach them. You protect them. You worry about them. You celebrate their accomplishments. Then suddenly, they’re becoming an adult and starting to build a life of their own. And what do you want for them? You want them to be happy. You want them to find their purpose.
You want them to chase their dreams. You want them to know that they are capable of more than they may realize. And most of all, you want them to know that wherever life takes them, their mom will always be cheering them on. That’s why “My Wish” belongs to Charlie.
Suzzane — “In My Life” by The Beatles It’s funny ChatGPT choose a Beatles song for Suzzane because they are one of my favorite groups. Some songs are easy to choose but for Suzzane it wouldn’t have been for me but ChatGPT picked out the perfect song and as soon as it began to play I felt a peace because it was the perfect song for her.
Suzanne’s wasn’t difficult at all “In My Life” by The Beatles. Perfect. Suzanne is part of my life. She is part of our family’s story. She is part of the memories I carry. There are people who become woven so deeply into a family that you can’t tell your story without them.
They become part of the traditions. Part of the stories. Part of the conversations. Part of the things that make you smile unexpectedly. Part of the memories that can bring tears just as quickly. Suzzane’s place in our family didn’t disappear. Life changed. Our family changed. But the love and memories remain.
That’s why “In My Life” feels so right. The Beatles released the song on Rubber Soul in 1965, and its focus on remembering the people and places that remain part of our lives makes it especially meaningful here. And when I think about Suzanne, I think about exactly that. She will always be part of my life.

To keep their spirit. To continue making memories. To stay connected to the people who love them. And maybe that’s what makes songs so powerful. Sometimes they say things for us that we don’t quite know how to say ourselves. “Forever Young” feels like one of those wishes.
Renee — ChastGPT choose “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars I’ve been doing that more and more as we build the new site. Because every family has people who simply show up. They help. They step in. They make things happen. They are there when you need an extra hand.
They may not always make a big announcement about what they’re doing. They just do it. And knowing there is somebody you can count on is one of the greatest gifts family can give us. That’s why Renee gets this song.
The Four-Legged Members of Our Family– Of course, I couldn’t possibly make a family playlist without including the dogs. Because around here, our dogs aren’t just pets. They’re family. Bear — ChatGPT choose “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” That fits Charlie and Bear to a T because he is Charlies best friend. A companion. Someone who is happy to see you. Someone who doesn’t care whether you’ve had a good day or a terrible day. Someone who doesn’t care what you’re wearing, what you accomplished, or whether you got everything done.
They’re just happy you’re there. Dogs have a way of reminding us that sometimes love doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it just sits beside you. That’s Bear. If you don’t believe me ask Charlie and David.

After choosing a song for everyone, I started thinking about the bigger picture. Maybe my family isn’t really one song. Maybe we’re a playlist. Each person has a different melody. Each person brings something different to our house and that is what creates a home.
Some songs are happy. Some are funny. Some are sentimental. Some bring back memories. Some remind us of people we miss. Some remind us of where we’ve been. And some remind us that we’re still making our story. But if I had to choose one song to represent all of us together, I think there is only one answer: “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge. Because that’s what we are.
Family. We aren’t perfect. We don’t always agree. We don’t always live under the same roof. Life changes. People grow. Children become adults. Families lose people. Families gain people. Dogs become family. And memories become more important as the years go by. But through all of it, there is still that thread connecting us.
We belong to one another. We have a history. We have stories. We have inside jokes. We have traditions. We have photographs. We have recipes. We have celebrations. We have difficult days. We have beautiful days. And we have people who will always be part of our story. Even when they’re no longer physically here.

The more I thought about this, the more I realized something. A family isn’t really one song. It’s all the songs. It’s the song that reminds you of your childhood. The song that reminds you of your spouse. The song that makes you think of your children. The song that brings back someone you miss.

They become your family’s soundtrack. And if I could listen to my family’s soundtrack from beginning to end, I wouldn’t skip a single song. Because every person has added something. Every memory has added a verse. Every season has added another melody. And somehow, through all the changes life brings, the song keeps going. That is my family. That is our story. And that is why I am Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed.
