Welcome to our series sharing Food Holidays: June 5th, 2022. Today is National Ketchup/ Catsup Day and in our home when Suzzane was alive Ketchup was a staple in our home and she wouldn’t eat without Ketchup Fast forward and she is gone and Charlie is here and Charlie and David are the same way. As for me I can take Ketchup or leave it and it wouldn’t bother me. How about you. Do you have to have Ketchup at ever meal? What is your favorite dish to put Ketchup on and why? For me and Charlie it’s French Fries.
- Ketchup (often spelled Catsup in American English) is the dominant term in American English and Canadian English, with “Catsup” being the prominent term in some Southern US States.
- The spelling Catsup first appeared in 1730 in a Jonathan Swift short story.
- The Webster’s Dictionary of 1913 defined ‘Catchup’ as: “table sauce made from Mushrooms, Tomatoes, Walnuts, etc
- Ketchup likely entered the English language from the Malay or Chinese word Kicap (pron. “Kichap”) meaning “Fish sauce.”
- Ketchup in the U.S. is labeled “Fancy”. This is a USDA grade, related to thickness. Fancy Ketchup has a higher Tomato solid concentration than other USDA grades.
