The other day David, Charlie and I went to Walmart to purchase groceries and cleaning supplies for the kitchen and the bathroom. While in the store I found a can of Comet that took me back to my parents and even my grandparents home because some products take me right back to another time.
For me, Comet is one of those products. When I was growing up, I remember Comet as the powder cleanser that came in a can. You would shake it out, sprinkle it where you needed it, add a little water, and start cleaning. It was one of those everyday household products that seemed to always be under the kitchen or bathroom sink.
So when I saw Comet Soft Cleanser With Bleach in a squeeze bottle, I have to admit I was surprised. The product I remembered from my childhood had received a modern update. I showed it to David and he was as surprised as I was. I Comet Soft Cleanser With Bleach, comes in a a 24-ounce cream cleanser. Charlie and I decided to give it a try in our upstairs restroom to see if it worked as good as I remembered.
This version is a scratch-free cream cleanser designed to help remove tough stains, soap scum, grease, and grime. It can be used on many household surfaces, including sinks, tubs, tile, countertops, porcelain, stainless steel, fiberglass, and more. Charlie and I used it in the upstairs toilet and in the bathtub.
The directions are simple enough for anyone to use. Just shake the container before use, flip open the cap, apply directly to the surface or onto a damp sponge, gently rub, and wipe clean. I decided to try it on our commode because I wanted to see if it would help with some buildup that other products I had been using were not completely removing. I was honestly impressed because it cleaned better than some of the other cleaners I had tried.
One thing I always mention in my cleaning reviews is that everyone’s home and everyone’s body reacts differently to cleaning products. I personally have to be careful with certain strong cleaners because some products can bother my breathing. Charlotte has similar issues, so David usually handles most of the heavier cleaning in our home.
When I do use cleaning products, I pay attention to how I feel and make sure I am using them carefully. Since Comet Soft Cleanser With Bleach contains bleach, anyone who is sensitive to bleach like I am or strong cleaning products should take that into consideration before using it. Always follow the directions on the label and use cleaning products safely.
I have to admit, part of what made me enjoy trying Comet again was the memory attached to it. It made me think about my parents and my grandparent’s and even David’s mom Sherry and wonder what they would think if they saw Comet today. A product they knew as a powder in a can has changed into a liquid cream cleanser in a squeeze bottle.
While the packaging has changed, the purpose remains the same: helping families keep their homes clean. Now, when it comes to which version our family prefers, everyone has their own opinion. Personally, I think I still prefer the original dry Comet that comes in the can. I like being able to shake out exactly how much I need, add a little water, and make it work the way I remember.
David, on the other hand, prefers the Comet Soft Cleanser With Bleach. He likes the convenience of the squeeze bottle and feels like it does a great job cleaning. And Charlie’s opinion is probably the simplest of all: either one is fine as long as it gets the job done and doesn’t leave more of a mess for us to clean up.
That is one thing about families — we can all live under the same roof and still have completely different favorites. Sometimes a simple cleaning product can do more than clean a surface. Sometimes it can bring back memories, remind us of the people who taught us how to care for our homes, and show us how everyday items continue to change with the times.
For me, Comet is a little bit of both: a childhood memory and a helpful cleaning product for today.
