Devoted in Death by J.D. Robb is a book I wouldn’t pick up on my own to read but the front page captured my attention and I thought David would enjoy the story. It’s part of the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series and J.D. Robb is the pseudonym of bestselling author Nora Roberts, who has written more than 200 novels. That really surprised me and wasn’t something I was expecting to find out especially when I love other books she has written.
When I picked up Devoted in Death, I was immediately drawn to the book jacket. I love how it gives readers quite a bit of information about the storyline while also showcasing other books they might enjoy reading. Which is why you would find it in my TBR list.
This book appears to be a suspenseful, dramatic thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. The storyline follows Lieutenant Eve Dallas as she investigates a series of brutal murders committed by a couple who seem to be dangerously devoted to one another.
Ella-Loo and Darryl are crazy in love, although they might just be crazy, too! Just like David and I without the killing. Their relationship, combined with their sense of entitlement and willingness to commit increasingly disturbing crimes, makes for an intriguing storyline.
As they travel toward New York, leaving a trail of violence behind them, Eve Dallas and her team are determined to stop them. I found the storyline interesting, especially the way the author explores the darker side of obsession and what can happen when someone’s idea of love becomes twisted.
One thing I did notice is that the book contains sexual content. I had originally thought about sharing it with David, but I felt a little funny about handing him a book with that kind of content. Although we’re married, I often find myself reading books aloud to him, and with other people in the house, I would be embarrassed reading some of those passages out loud. So I’m still undecided about whether I’ll share this one with him.
Devoted in Death sounds like a highly engaging crime thriller with a compelling storyline, suspense, unexpected twists and turns, and characters who take their devotion to an entirely different level. Although this book may not be for everyone, particularly readers who prefer to avoid sexual content or graphic violence, I wouldn’t want my personal preferences to discourage anyone else from checking it out.
