The other day I was working when Charlie asked me if I wanted to go anywhere. I didn’t but if he was asking me if I did I knew he wanted something. I stopped and said no, but if you want to go somewhere we can.

Charlie said let’s go to QT and if you know me you know I’m not going to turn a 49 cent drink down. I got up and started to look for shoes when Charlie reminded me the crocks was in the car.

We headed downstairs put the Roast back into the Ice Box. Asked Gerald if he needed anything and headed out to the car. As we was leaving I asked Charlie if he was hungry. He said no, not really but he would still eat if we got something.

I reminded Charlie we didn’t need a fancy restaurant to have a really good meal. Jack n the Box was at the end of the Street and Sonic was across from the Dollar Tree was going to. I asked Charlie if he wanted either of them and he picked Whataburger.

Then we had to decide which location we wanted to go to. We decided to go down to Beach Street because we could eat. Then go across the Street for our QT drinks. Plus, there was a Md Donalds there and Taco Casa.

Sometimes Charlie and I want a place where the menu is big, the food is down-home, the waitresses are friendly, and you can sit down and enjoy a good breakfast without feeling like you have to dress up for the occasion.

As we got close to Whataburger Charlie said mom I know your not much for fast food breakfast so let’s just go to Blue Mound Cafe because they have old fashioned breakfasts and we would be able to go inside and eat. That’s one of the reasons our family likes Blue Mound Cafe.

If you haven’t have the opportunity to try them out there is several locations in Fort Worth including Rufe Snow but the Blue Mound Cafe – we visited is located on Belknap at 3701 E. Belknap St., Fort Worth, TX 76111. The Belknap location is currently listed as open from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

And here’s one of the things I really like about it: You can get breakfast all day. So if you wake up wanting eggs and hash browns at lunchtime, you don’t have to settle for a sandwich just because it’s past breakfast hours. That’s my kind of restaurant.

And the menu? It is huge. I’m not exaggerating when I say there are lots and lots and lots of choices. There are omelets, breakfast plates, pancakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy, breakfast tacos, burgers, sandwiches, salads, chicken-fried steak, chicken-fried chicken, meatloaf, pork chops, fish, vegetables, desserts, and plenty more.

The menu is also easy to read, which I appreciate. You don’t have to sit there forever trying to figure out what you’re looking at. Plus, there are signs with there specials on the outside wall and on menus throughout the restaurant.

And if you like down-home cooking, there are plenty of choices that feel like they belong on a family kitchen table instead of a fancy restaurant menu. They also have daily lunch specials, so there’s usually something different to look forward to.

And Wednesday is a particularly good day to stop in if you’re a fan of comfort food because they offer their chicken-fried steak and chicken-fried chicken special. Don’t forget the desserts that are slap yo” mamma good. Buttercup…

Now, let me tell you about our family favorites. David, Charlie, Gerald, and I don’t necessarily order the same things when we go. Gerald likes the chicken-fried steak, especially when they don’t get too heavy-handed with the pepper.

I have my own favorites, too, including their French Toast And one of the things David, Charlie and I enjoy is the quad appetizer tray where you get to pick 4 items out for it. I just miss the Steak bites they used to have.

For my family there is something about sitting down at a place like this and sharing an appetizer while you’re deciding what you want to eat. The other thing I have always noticed at Blue Mound Cafe is the staff.

The waitresses are so nice. The staff is friendly. And that matters to me. You can have great food, but when the people serving you are kind and welcoming, it changes the entire experience. While waiting on your food don’t forget to check out the signs.

And that brings me to our latest visit. Yesterday, Charlie and I went to Blue Mound Cafe for one of our Mom & Me adventures. We couldn’t decide where to go. I had actually wanted Waffle House, and we had already talked ourselves out of Blue Mound Cafe once.

But somehow, we ended up there anyway. And I’m glad we did. We both ordered water because we didn’t need to spend money on drinks. I found the $5.50 menu and ordered over-medium egg, sausage, and hash browns.

It was more than enough for me. Charlie ordered two over-medium eggs with bacon and a biscuit. His meal came with gravy, which meant I got to steal some of his gravy for my hash browns.

That’s what I call making breakfast better. But then came the part that had nothing to do with the restaurant. I had gone outside before Charlie, and I let him handle the money. I’m trying to help him become more comfortable and efficient with those everyday responsibilities, so I let him pay when we’re out.

Even when we’re using a credit card, I often let Charlie be the one to handle it. He’s the man of the family, and I want him to learn those things. When he came outside, he had brought his biscuit with him.

For me. He knew I like that kind of breakfast. And he knew I would be happy to have the biscuit and jelly the next morning. Some people might look at that and think, “It’s just a biscuit.” But to me?

That’s love. He remembered what his mom likes. He remembered that I would eat it the next morning. And he helped keep us from wasting food. While saving money by drinking water.

That’s important to me because there are so many people in this world who are hungry. If we can save food instead of throwing it away, I’m going to do that. A leftover biscuit might seem like a little thing.

But little things can say a lot. And yesterday’s breakfast said something else, too. It said, Mom and Charlie finally got their breakfast together. Just us. I’ve wanted that for a long time.

Every time I say I want to go have breakfast with Charlie, David will say, “Wait, I’ll go with you.” And I know he means it lovingly. But sometimes a mom just wants time with her son. Not because she doesn’t love her husband.

Not because she doesn’t want David there. But because Mom & Me time is different. Yesterday, we finally got it. And I believe that was one of those little God winks. We couldn’t decide where to eat. We almost went somewhere else.

We had already ruled Blue Mound Cafe out. And somehow, we ended up sitting across from each other, eating breakfast, talking, laughing, sharing gravy, and making a memory. Without being rushed to vacate the booth.

That is what I love about Blue Mound Cafe. It’s not just the food. It’s the kind of place where our family has favorites. It’s the kind of place where you can get breakfast all day. It’s the kind of place where you can find a daily lunch special.

It’s the kind of place where Wednesday might be your day for chicken-fried steak or chicken-fried chicken. It’s the kind of place where the menu gives you so many choices that everybody at the table can find something they like.

And it’s the kind of place where friendly service makes you want to come back. But for me, yesterday, Blue Mound Cafe became something more. It became the place where Charlie and I finally got that Mom & Me breakfast I’d been wanting.

The restaurant gave us the meal. Charlie gave me the biscuit. And God gave me the moment. I’ll take that kind of breakfast any day. Even though we spent $20 we shouldn’t have spent the LORD knew Charlie and I needed that time together and has replaced the money I spent. Buttercup…
