David finally conceded Charlie and I were going to get another dog. So we went to the Haltom Dog Pound but couldn’t find a puppy like Charlie wanted. The next day we decided to venture into another Animal Shelter in Richland Hills, which is right around the corner from my home. As we walked into the Animal Shelter I wanted to let you know sometimes a place finds its way into your story before you ever actually walk through the door.
That is exactly what happened with Pit Coffee. Before I share my thoughts I wanted to let you know David thought it said pet because of his reading. I hate to admit it but Charlie and I started laughing and had to tell him it was Pitt Coffee—P-I-T. Reading has always been one of David’s struggles, so it became one of those little family moments that made us laugh. We continued into the shelter that day because we were on a puppy mission, and I didn’t get a chance to stop at the coffee shop.
But I remembered it.
Then, this weekend, my sister and I headed out on one of our little adventures. After stopping at Clove Coffee Shop, we came back by Pit Coffee. This time, we walked inside. And I’m glad we did. The Dog Caught My Attention the guests were petting before I got very far inside and I wanted to stop and play with it. Charlie would have wanted to take the dog home with us.
One of the first things I noticed was the personality of the shop. I loved the selfie wall, and I especially loved the logo with the dog right in the middle of the circle. It immediately made sense when I learned more about Pit Coffee and its connection to local pets and animal organizations. I fell in love. That shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows me. After all, we had just been at the Richland Hills Animal Shelter looking for a puppy. and yes, we brought one home who is named Sandy.
My sister and I noticed different things about the seating. She liked the little conversation area toward the back. I immediately noticed the bench because it looked like a place where I could actually sit down with my computer and get some work done. And that matters to me. I love finding coffee shops where I can sit for a while instead of simply grabbing a drink and leaving. I can see myself taking my computer to Pit Coffee, working on the blog, visiting with friends, or just spending some time somewhere different.
While we were there, I mentioned to the owner I had seen on Facebook that they hosted a back-to-school game night. Of course, that caught my attention because I used board games when #Homeschooling Charlie and I can see sharing this event with local Homeschoolers looking for something new to do.
I asked whether they planned to have more events, and I was told they did. I also learned that Pit Coffee works with the animal shelter and local pet communities, which made even more sense after seeing how much the dogs are part of the shop’s personality. I really like businesses that want to become part of their community.
And I could see Pit Coffee becoming a place where people meet, visit, play games, work, and make connections. That got me thinking about hosting a blogging, small business event and inviting the community out so we can help each other be seen and grow. If you own a business would you like to join us?
Here’s the funny part. I didn’t try anything. Not because I didn’t want to. I actually decided I wanted to wait. I want to take Charlie and David back with me. After David’s first accidental introduction to the Pit Coffee sign, I think it will be fun for him to actually see the place. And next time, I want to sit down and explore the menu. Because Pit Coffee offers specialty coffees, teas, lemonades, energizers, and other specialty drinks, so there appears to be plenty to explore.
But that brings me to something I still want to learn. What Can You Eat at Pit Coffee? Before recommending any coffee shop, I want to know what is actually available. Do they have pastries? Desserts? Which I didn’t see but my sister said she saw a Cookie and a Muffin which sounds so good. Breakfast items? Snacks? Something for a child who doesn’t want coffee?
I looked online. I checked the website. I even looked at Facebook. And I still wasn’t able to find a clear food menu. The QR code I tried while I was there wasn’t working for me, either. It just took me back to the website which made me feel like I had fallen down the rabbit hole again. That made me stop and think.
I’m comfortable enough with technology to keep looking, but what about someone who isn’t? If a customer wants to know what they can order before making the trip, they shouldn’t have to hunt for the answer. And that isn’t meant as a criticism. It’s something I hope the business will consider because I think Pit Coffee has something special going for it.
The seating made me think about another possibility. I can picture business owners meeting here. I can picture friends getting together. I can picture homeschool families meeting here. I can picture someone sitting with a laptop and working for an hour or two. But there are still a few things I want to know.
If someone is going to spend several hours working at the coffee shop, can they bring their own snack or lunch? Do they have Wi-Fi and electrical outlets? Can people reserve space for meetings? And what is the policy on bringing your own dog? I saw dogs there when I visited, so I know dogs are part of the Pit Coffee atmosphere. But I don’t yet know whether customers are allowed to bring their own pets inside. Those are the kinds of questions that are helpful for customers to know before they visit at least they are for me.Meeting the Owner
One of my favorite parts of my visit was getting to talk with the owner. She was friendly and willing to talk with me about the coffee shop, how it came about, and some of the things they hope to do in the community. She also told me she was open to doing more events in the area. That made me even more interested.
I don’t just want to write about a coffee shop. I want to tell you about places that become part of the community. And I think Pit Coffee has the potential to do that. I also like learning they have a second location over close to TCU which I can visit when I’m on that side of Town. Would you like to go with me?
I plan on going back in the near future because as I said earlier I didn’t order anything this time because I want to come back with David and Charlie. I want to sit down. I want to try something. I want to bring my laptop if I’m able to get one and work without being disturbed by family and dogs and phone calls.
And maybe I’ll bring some girlfriends another day. Maybe we’ll play a game. Maybe I’ll work. Maybe I’ll meet another dog that I immediately want to take home. And maybe David will finally get the name right. Pit Coffee. P-I-T. Although I may have to remind him. And that’s okay because I love him and we all stumble over names at times.
Those are the little moments that turn an ordinary coffee stop into part of a family story. For now, I’m leaving Pit Coffee with a smile, a few questions, and a reason to come back. Because sometimes the best local discoveries aren’t about finding a perfect place. They’re about finding a place with potential—and getting to know the people behind it.
