I was blessed to be able to have lunch with my best friend Debbie Finney Sutton the other day and she shared what she was doing for her Godson Austiin since they celebrate #Harvest instead of #Halloween which was a dinner built around Charlie Brown’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and how she would be doing the same thing for Christmas.
As I thought about this I thought how fun it would have been to have done this with Suzzane and Charlie when they were #Homeschooling. Since Charlie was out of town for Halloween. I was thinking about doing this when he returns. Would you want to have dinner with us as we celebrate dinner with Charlie Brown and his friends which is allowing us to create a new family tradition which will be filled with books, movies and memories.
Come and join me as we build a new tradition with a favorite book while others begin with a movie, a family dinner or a simple Sunday afternoon spent reading the comics together. I don’t know about your family but for my family, Charlie Brown has been part of our story for as long as I can remember.
My son Charlie has been known as Peanuts since he was a little boy. In fact, his nursery was decorated around Charlie Brown, and he’s been called Peanuts since before he was born and as he got older he became known as Charlie Brown practically since day one!
So you can imagine why Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the Peanuts gang hold such a special place in our hearts. But there’s another reason these stories mean so much to me. When my daughter Suzzane was little, we would sit together and read the Sunday comics. Those little moments, sharing the funny stories and enjoying the characters, became part of our family memories.
Today, one of my children is celebrating life here on earth, and the other is in Heaven. I can’t bring those childhood days back, but I can continue celebrating the traditions and memories that connect us. And that’s what inspired me to introduce this new series at Greatful Moments with you were we will be having Dinner with Charlie Brown and Friends!
I want families to have an opportunity to enjoy these classic stories in a new way. We’ll bring together the books, movies, holiday specials, family dinners, crafts and activities that make an ordinary evening something special. We’ll read a book together, for our 10 Minute Reading Challenge. Then we will watch the movie or television special, prepare foods inspired by the characters and create our own holiday decorations.
We’ll even use inexpensive butcher paper or construction paper to make our own holiday tablecloths, letting children decorate the table before everyone sits down to eat. We’ll begin with Halloween and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, because it’s never too late to enjoy a favorite story!
Then we’ll move into fall, football, Thanksgiving, Christmas and eventually Valentine’s Day, Easter and other family celebrations. This isn’t about making elaborate meals or spending a lot of money. It’s about making time for one another. It’s about passing along favorite stories, sharing laughter, creating traditions and giving children memories they can carry with them as they grow.
And for me, it’s also a little way of keeping some very precious childhood memories close. So pull up a chair, grab a book, choose a movie and join us for dinner! Because the best family traditions aren’t always about what’s on the table. They’re about who’s gathered around it and the memories we make together. With love from our family to yours.
Grateful. Thankful. Blessed.
