John Mellencamp: The Songbook: 50 Years of Song and Poetry
As I sat down this morning, looking through the mail and books that had come my way, my mind started wandering. I found myself looking at John Mellencamp: The Songbook: 50 Years of Song and Poetry. I found myself wondering when he first began his music career because, honestly, I cannot remember a time when I didn’t hear one of his songs playing somewhere.
Not only for me but for David as well his music has been part of the soundtrack of my life for so long that sometimes I don’t even have to think about the words. They just come to me. And when you grow up listening to music like that, certain songs don’t just remind you of a singer. They remind you of the time in your life when you first heard them, the memories you made, and all the years that have passed since then.
Now, imagine my reaction when I discovered that this book wasn’t just about John Mellencamp and his music. The foreword was written by Stephen King! OMG! Can you imagine putting John Mellencamp and Stephen King together in one book? I honestly feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven!
If you’ve followed Greatful Moments for any length of time, you know how much I love books, music, movies, and the little things that bring back memories. My family and I have followed Stephen King’s work for years, and John Mellencamp’s music is another one of those familiar pieces of life that never seems to disappear.
So when I had the opportunity to look inside John Mellencamp: The Songbook: 50 Years of Song and Poetry, I knew this was a book I wanted to spend some time with. I originally had plans to save it as a Christmas present for David, but the more I thought about it, the harder it became to leave the cover closed.
Sometimes a book comes along that makes you curious. Sometimes it brings back memories. And sometimes, when you’re lucky, it does both. This morning, I decided it was time to open the book and see what was waiting inside. And once I opened the book, I found myself getting lost in the pages. This wasn’t just a book about John Mellencamp and his career. It was an opportunity to revisit the songs he had taken the time to write, along with his notes, handwritten drafts, poetry, and the stories behind the music.
For my family there was something special about seeing the actual words behind songs we’ve listened to for years. I may have sung them hundreds of times, but seeing them written down, along with the notes and thoughts that went into creating them, gives you a different appreciation for the person behind the music.
Of course, I couldn’t look through this book without stopping when I came across Jack and Diane. Oh my goodness! I was a teenager when that song was part of the music playing around me, and I can still sing it word for word. Tell me I’m not the only one who hears the opening and immediately wants to sing along!
As I turned the pages, I found myself remembering the songs and saying their names out loud. Before long, Charlie joined in with comments of his own, telling me he knew this song and that song, too. I laughed because, of course, he did! He’s grown up hearing this kind of music, and here we were, sharing memories through songs that connected our generations.
That is one of the things I enjoyed most about opening this book. It wasn’t just about looking at photographs or reading lyrics. It was about remembering where I was in my own life when these songs became familiar, and discovering details about the writing that I hadn’t stopped to think about before. Sometimes the best part of a book is the way it takes you back in time without your ever having to leave your chair.
