Fall Shower Curtains: A Fun and Unexpected Way to Decorate Your Home for Thanksgiving

David and I’ve been discussing Thanksgiving even thought its a while off so we can make sure we have money in the budget to either cook or go out to dinner. Since David’s dad isn’t here this year I’ve been worried about what Granny Sherry will do. I’ve come to the conclusion that I will cook dinner.

I know David’s mom will want to know what she can bring and I would rather do all the cooking myself than have someone bring something for us to eat. Now, I have a question for you. What if I asked my Thanksgiving guests to bring shower curtains instead of another pie?

I know that probably sounds a little unusual, but hear me out! When you’re hosting Thanksgiving, it seems like everybody wants to bring something. Someone offers a pie, somebody else volunteers to bring a cake, and another person asks whether you need another side dish. Before you know it, you’re trying to find room in the refrigerator for everything.

Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate people wanting to help. But what if, this year, we asked for something a little different? I’ve been looking at all the pretty fall-themed shower curtains available, and I started thinking about how we could use them to decorate our home for Thanksgiving.

Instead of buying traditional curtains for every doorway, we could use seasonal shower curtains to add color, create separate spaces, and make our home feel festive for the holidays. And no, we don’t have to make everything match! Now, let me explain why we would use shower curtains as Fall Decorations?

If your like my family when you think about shower curtains, you probably picture a bathroom. Then the more I started noticing shower curtains I started looking at them a little differently because of all the beautiful fall designs. If you haven’t noticed you can find shower curtains featuring pumpkins, colorful autumn leaves, harvest designs, and other seasonal patterns. Depending on the material and design, they might work beautifully as decorative panels in other parts of the home.

For our family, this would be a future decorating project. I haven’t purchased the curtains yet, but I have already started imagining where we could put them. The idea is to use seasonal decorations in places where we might not ordinarily think to decorate. And if we can reuse them next year, even better!

Five Places We Could Display Fall Shower Curtains

  1. Hide the Stairway With a Seasonal Curtain– One of the first places I thought about was the opening to our stairway. A fall shower curtain could add a splash of seasonal color and help screen the view of the stairs from the rest of the house. Rather than leaving the opening plain, we could choose a curtain with pumpkins, leaves, or another autumn design. It would be a simple way to bring Thanksgiving decorating into an area we might otherwise overlook. Any curtain used here would need to be mounted securely without blocking the stairs, creating a trip hazard, or interfering with an emergency exit.

2. Give the Dining Room Its Own Personality– Our dining room is its own space, and a seasonal curtain at the entrance could make it feel even more separate from the living room. Imagine walking toward the dining room and seeing a beautiful fall design welcoming you to Thanksgiving dinner. We could choose a harvest pattern, colorful leaves, or something that makes us smile. It doesn’t have to match the other curtains in the house. The goal is to make the dining area feel warm, welcoming, and ready for family time.

3. Hide the Kitchen Mess While We Eat– Now, here’s a practical idea! When Thanksgiving dinner is ready, the last thing I want to worry about is whether everyone can see the dirty dishes, pots, and pans waiting in the kitchen. A decorative curtain at the kitchen entrance could help screen the view of the work waiting for us after dinner. We can sit down, enjoy our meal, and spend time with the people we love without staring at the kitchen mess. Of course, we still have to wash the dishes eventually. A curtain won’t make them disappear, although it might make dinner a little more relaxing! Keep any curtain away from cooking appliances and heat sources, and make sure it doesn’t obstruct access to the kitchen.

4. Change the Blue Curtains at the Back Door– We already have blue curtains hanging at our back door, and I’ve been thinking about changing them for the season. Why not replace them with something that feels more like fall? We could choose a shower curtain with colorful leaves, pumpkins, or a Thanksgiving harvest design. When Christmas arrives, we could switch to something with Christmas trees, snowflakes, or another holiday pattern. That gives us a way to change the look of our home without having to buy a completely new set of traditional curtains.

5. Let Every Room Have Its Own Look– Here’s something I especially like about this idea: the curtains don’t have to match! One person might choose pumpkins. Someone else might prefer colorful autumn leaves. Another person might want a harvest design. Rather than making every doorway look the same, we could let each area reflect the person who chose it. Our home doesn’t have to look like a furniture catalog. It can look like our family, with different personalities, different tastes, and plenty of love.

Instead of me choosing every curtain and deciding where everything goes, I thought it would be fun for each of us to pick a spot and a curtain we’d like to display. David has a design he’d choose: Take a look at David’s shower curtain choice on Amazon.

Charlie has his own idea: See Charlie’s first choice on Amazon. And I have a design I’m considering, too: See one of my shower curtain choices on Amazon. These are possibilities we’re considering for a future project. We haven’t purchased the curtains yet, and we’re still deciding which designs would work best in our home.

I like the idea of letting everyone have a say in how our home looks for the holidays. David gets to choose his favorite, Charlie gets to choose his, and I get to choose mine. Then we can decide together which curtain belongs in each spot. Who knows? We might end up with three completely different designs, and that might be what makes the whole thing fun!

This is where my idea gets a little different. When people ask what they can bring for Thanksgiving, we could tell them we’re working on a seasonal decorating project and would love a fall-themed shower curtain Instead of bringing another dessert we might not need, a guest could contribute a curtain for one of the doorways we’re decorating.

Of course, if someone has a favorite family recipe they want to bring, we can still make room for that. This isn’t about turning away food or making anyone feel obligated to buy something. It’s simply another option for people who genuinely want to help which we would be grateful, thankful and blessed to have.

You could even share a few designs you’re considering so guests have an idea of the colors or patterns you like. If several people want to participate, you can coordinate ahead of time rather than ending up with more curtains than you need. And if you don’t want to ask guests to purchase anything, you can always look through your own closets, shop secondhand, or wait until you find a curtain that fits your budget.

Once we’ve chosen our curtains, we can make decorating a family activity. Everyone gets to pick a spot, help decide where their curtain belongs, and see how the different designs come together. We could take pictures of our finished decorations and keep them to look back on next year. Maybe we’ll decide to change everything next Thanksgiving, or perhaps we’ll discover a few favorites that become part of our holiday tradition.

The important thing is that we do it together. Sometimes the best memories come from the simplest ideas. We don’t have to spend a fortune or make every room perfect. We just need a little imagination and a willingness to try something different. And if we can make our home feel more festive while finding a practical use for something unexpected, that’s even better.

Now We Need Your Help! We’ve been thinking about the stairway, the dining room entrance, the kitchen doorway, and the back door. But we’d love to hear what you would do! Here are a few questions for you: Would you use a fall shower curtain as a decorative panel in your home?

Would you choose pumpkins, autumn leaves, or a harvest design? Would you let each family member choose a different curtain, or would you want everything to match? What kind of curtain should we choose for our back door? Leave a comment and help us decide!

I’d love to hear your ideas, especially if you’ve found an unusual way to decorate your home for Thanksgiving. Sometimes we just need to look at everyday things a little differently. Who would have thought a shower curtain could inspire a Thanksgiving decorating project?
