National No Bra Day: Burn Your Bra and Let Those Girls Breathe!

Butercup.. Ladies can we have a little heart-to-heart today? Because I have a question for you. Have you ever walked through your front door after a long day, taken off your bra, and flung that thing across the room like you were competing in the Olympics? Please tell me I’m not the only one!

Today is National No Bra Day, also commonly associated with the playful idea of Burn Your Bra Day. Before anybody gets excited, we’re not actually setting fire to our bras around here. If I did Charlie and David would probably have a few choice words about that, especially if I accidentally set something else on fire in the process.

I’m just talking about that wonderful feeling of finally taking off something that has been bothering you all day. Now, I know every woman is different, and some women are perfectly comfortable going without a bra. Others prefer wearing one. And then there are women like me.

I’m a very, very voluptuous woman up top, and let’s just say a bra is pretty much a necessity in my everyday life. I need the support, but that doesn’t mean I have to enjoy wearing one! Sometimes those things hurt. Sometimes the straps dig into your shoulders, the band feels like it’s trying to cut you in half, and by the time you get home, you are more than ready to be done with the whole arrangement.

There is just something about getting comfortable in your own home, putting on your favorite comfy clothes, and letting your body relax. And if that means your bra ends up flying across the bedroom, well, I’m not here to judge! Speaking of bras and other unmentionables, this seems like the perfect time to share a story about my husband, David.

If you’ve been around Greatful Moments for any length of time, you already know that my husband has a way of making ordinary days a whole lot more entertaining. Back in the day, my sister was staying with David and me for a little while because her house had caught on fire. Let me make one thing clear: there is absolutely nothing funny about someone losing their home to a fire. That was a difficult situation, and we were glad she had somewhere to stay.

The funny part came later, courtesy of my goofy husband. My sister needed to do some laundry, so she put a load in the washing machine. Unfortunately, she forgot to take it out and put it in the dryer before she left for work. Me, you can’t live with them and you can’t live without them.

If your like my family you’ve forgotten a load of laundry at one time or another, haven’t you? We put it in, get busy doing something else, and suddenly remember it hours later. Laundry has a way of becoming one of those never-ending chores for my family.

Well, David came home and decided he needed to wash some clothes of his own. There was just one little problem. My sister’s clothes were still in the washer, and David needed that machine. You would think the solution was simple. Take her clothes out, put them in the dryer, and get on with his day. Oh, no. Not my David!

He absolutely refused to touch my sister’s laundry because, in his words and his mind, she might have had some unmentionables in there. And apparently, handling a woman’s laundry was where he drew the line! Now, I wasn’t home to rescue him from this terrible predicament. I was at work, minding my own business, when my phone rang.

Guess who was on the other end? David. He was practically freaking out because he needed to do laundry, my sister’s clothes were in the way, and he wasn’t about to take them out himself. I can just imagine the conversation from his side. He had a perfectly good washing machine sitting right there in his own home, but he couldn’t use it because a load of laundry might contain something he didn’t want to touch.

And what did my resourceful husband decide to do? Did he take a deep breath and move the clothes? Did he wait until I got home? Did he call my sister and ask her to come take care of her laundry? Nope! My husband walked across the street to the laundromat and spent money to wash his clothes rather than take my sister’s clothes out of our washing machine! I still laugh thinking about it.

Here was a grown man who was perfectly capable of doing his own laundry, but the possibility of encountering a bra or some other unmentionable had him packing up his clothes and heading to the laundromat.

I mean, David, honey, what exactly did you think was going to happen? Was the bra going to jump out of the washing machine and attack you? Lord, help me! Now, before anybody gets upset with David, remember that this is a story about my husband and his own particular brand of silliness. We all have our quirks, and his refusal to handle my sister’s laundry certainly gave me a family story worth telling years later. And trust me, there have been plenty of other stories along the way!

Today, I’m raising a figurative glass to every woman who has ever come home, kicked off her shoes, changed into something comfortable, and breathed a sigh of relief when she finally took off that bra. For those of us who need the support, we know that feeling of relief is real. We may need our bras when we’re out and about, but that doesn’t mean we’re not counting the minutes until we can get comfortable again.

And if your husband happens to be anything like mine, you might want to keep an eye on the laundry situation. You never know when a perfectly ordinary load of clothes might send him on an unexpected field trip to the laundromat! As for David, I’m pretty sure he would still tell you he made the right decision that day. And knowing my husband, he would probably defend it with a straight face, too. That’s just David being David.

Now it’s your turn!– Ladies, do you look forward to taking your bra off as soon as you get home? Do you have a funny story about your husband, laundry, or something he absolutely refused to do? Share your stories in the comments. I’d love to hear them, because I’m betting David isn’t the only man who has ever gone to ridiculous lengths to avoid dealing with a woman’s unmentionables! Until next time, remember to be grateful for the little things, laugh at the funny moments, and never underestimate the stories your family will give you to tell.

Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed.
