When I think about fall, I think about cooler weather, changing leaves, harvest colors, football, getting outside, and making ordinary family moments a little more fun. For my family that hasn’t been happening the way I would like it to.
It feels like I’m stuck inside everyday and don’t get out unless David is off and then its just for errands. We haven’t done anything fun in a while and I’m tried of it. This afternoon when Charlie said he was hungry and that got me thinking about lunch.
Why does a sandwich have to be a plain square? Kids love fun shapes. Maybe not teens but they would survive if there hungry enough. When Charlie was little David used to make pancakes into different shapes, using cookie cutters for cookies, he would turn ordinary food into something special.
So why not do the same thing with sandwiches? I decided I would make fall-shaped sandwiches which are an easy way to make lunch a little more fun without turning it into a complicated recipe. If Charlie doesn’t want them its okay because Gerald and I will eat them. How about you?
I found these fall cookie cutters on Amazon, and that’s what got this idea started.
Find the Fall Cookie Cutters on Amazon although they kept trying to give me Pumpkins or Thanksgiving cookie cutters which I was having no, part of. The great thing is that you don’t have to use these cookie cutters just for baking.
Use them for sandwiches, toast, cheese, fruit, pancakes, or whatever else you can think of. And that’s exactly the kind of thing I love for families: one item that can be used in several different ways. If your #Homeschooling they can be used for Art and also a Cooking Class.
Now, I have a question for you. What kind of sandwich would you make and why? I don’t want to tell you that you have to make one specific sandwich. Make it your way. Kids eat chicken salad. Kids eat tuna fish sandwiches. Kids eat grilled chicken sandwiches.
Some like mayonnaise. Some don’t. Some love mustard and pickles. Others want cheese and nothing else. So take the sandwich your family already likes and make it into a fun fall shape. One of my favorite ideas would be a simple chicken sandwich.
You can use:
Cooked chicken or
Bread or sandwich rolls
Mayonnaise
Mustard
Pickles
Lettuce
Cheese
Coleslaw
Salt and pepper
Any of your family’s favorite sandwich toppings
You can use leftover chicken, rotisserie chicken, or grilled chicken. You can make chicken salad or you can make a grilled chicken sandwich. There really isn’t one right way to do it If your like David and I and you love those crispy chicken sandwiches you get when you’re out?
You can make your own version at home. Think about the sandwiches your family likes from places such as Chick-fil-A, Slim Chickens, or Raising Cane’s and then make your own version. Add pickles. Add cheese. Add coleslaw. Use your favorite sauce. Then grab your fall cookie cutter and make that sandwich fun. Because really, if a pancake can be a horse, why can’t a chicken sandwich be a fall leaf?
How to Make Fall-Shaped Sandwiches
Start with your favorite sandwich.
Place the sandwich on a cutting board and use a fall-shaped cookie cutter to press down through the bread and filling.
Depending on the cutter and the thickness of your sandwich, you may want to cut the bread first and then assemble the sandwich.
Save the leftover bread pieces, too.- You can eat them alongside lunch, use them for croutons, or even toast them with a little cinnamon and sugar for another snack. Or you could feed the Birds.
Make Lunch Feel Like Fall You don’t have to stop with the sandwich. Add a few easy sides such as:
Apple slices
Grapes
Carrot sticks
Cucumber slices
Pretzels
Crackers
Orange slices
Yogurt
A favorite dipping sauce
It doesn’t have to be fancy. Sometimes just changing the shape of the food is enough to make kids excited about lunch. Now I thought I would share a fun family idea with you that you can share with your friends and family.
I could even see making these into a little Fun Sandwich Friday tradition. Let everyone choose their sandwich. Let everyone choose a fall shape.
Then put everything on the table and let the family make their own. One person might want chicken salad. Another might want grilled chicken. Someone else might want tuna. Don’t forget about a PB&J or a Grilled Cheese Sandwich.
That’s okay. We’re not trying to make everybody eat the exact same thing. We’re just making lunchtime a little more fun. Don’t Forget the Kids Can Help Older children can help assemble the sandwiches. Younger children can help choose the cookie cutters and pick their toppings. And depending on their age, they may even be able to help press the cutters into the bread with supervision.
I always like recipes and food ideas that give families a reason to work together. It doesn’t have to be a big cooking project. Sometimes it’s just lunch. Here is another thing I wanted to remind you about Fall Doesn’t Have to Mean Pumpkins
That’s another thing I love about this idea. We’re talking about fall. Leaves. Acorns. Harvest shapes. Fall colors. Crisp mornings. Family time. You don’t have to turn everything into a pumpkin just because Flla or autumn as people likes to call it has arrived.
These cookie cutters give you plenty of ways to celebrate the season without making everything look like Thanksgiving.
