When Being Bored Wasn’t a Bad Thing

Now, that the site is back up and supposed to be working I thought I would ask you a question this morning. Do you remember when being bored wasn’t a bad thing? It meant to go find something to do because if our parents had to find us something most likely it would have been a job of some kind.

Back in the day there was a time when being bored wasn’t an emergency. It was a time when you didn’t automatically reach for a phone. There wasn’t a tablet sitting nearby waiting to entertain you. Sometimes you just went outside, found a friend, grabbed a book, made something, rode your bike, or simply figured it out.

And you know what? We survived. More than that—we made memories. That’s what inspired this new series here at GreatfulMoments.com. This isn’t a series about telling you that everything was better “back then.”

It isn’t about saying technology is bad. And it certainly isn’t about telling another family how they should spend their time. It’s about remembering the simple things that made childhood special—and looking at how some of those same things can still happen today.

Because kids still need imagination. Families still need time together. And sometimes the simplest things become the memories we carry for the rest of our lives. So I’m taking you on a little trip down memory lane through the years with my family.

We’re going to talk about rainy days, cardboard boxes, homemade crafts, family evenings, neighborhood adventures, wrestling, video games, sprinklers, books, boredom, and all the little things in between.

And maybe, while you’re reading, you’ll remember a few things from your own childhood. Maybe you’ll remember something your mom or dad used to tell you or maybe you’ll remember a game you played.

Maybe you’ll remember sitting on a porch, riding a bicycle, making a fort, watching television with your grandparents, or running through a sprinkler on a hot summer day. Maybe you’ll even find yourself saying, “Oh my goodness, I remember doing that!” That’s exactly what I hope happens.

I hope you will join us on Our 10-Article Journey and that you will share these post with your friends and family. Grab your favorite reading spot, a snack or two and your favorite beverage and let’s get to reading.

Here is where we’re headed:

1. When “I’m Bored” Meant “Go Find Something to Do”– The story that started it all—and the lesson my mom an dad and even grandparents taught me when I complained that I was bored that carried over to Suzzane and Charlie.

2. The Days Before Screens Were Everywhere– We will be sharing what childhood looked like when there was one television, neighborhood games, bicycles, and a streetlight telling you it was time to come home.

3. When a Cardboard Box Could Become Anything– Because sometimes a box wasn’t trash. It was a robot, a fort, a spaceship, or whatever your imagination decided it should be.

4. Rainy Days Before We Had a Screen for Everything– Running through the rain, making mud pies, dancing outside, and discovering that a rainy day didn’t have to be an indoor day.

5. When Making Something Was Better Than Buying Something– Crafts, baking, homemade fun, and the simple joy of making something with your own two hands.

6. When the Whole Family Was Home and Nobody Had a Schedule– Those evenings when nobody was rushing somewhere and being together was enough.

7. What Happened When We Had to Make Our Own Fun– Neighborhood adventures, bicycles, friends, snacks, sprinklers, and figuring out what to do when nobody handed you a schedule you had to follow.

8. The Simple Things Kids Remember– The cookies, books, porches, music, friends, family, and little moments that somehow stay with us long after the years have passed.

9. Then & Now: How We Keep Ourselves Entertained– Because some things really do follow us from one generation to another—from watching wrestling with Grandma to watching it with Charlie, from Pac-Man to today’s video games, and from swimming pools back to the simple sprinkler.

10. What We Can Still Learn From Being Bored– A final look at why boredom doesn’t have to be something we immediately fix—and what we might discover when we give ourselves room to figure things out.

I would like to invite you to come take the trip with me and remember you don’t have to read all ten articles at once. That’s the beauty of a series like this. Pull up a chair. Grab a cup of your favorite beverage.

Maybe call your sister or brother. Send one of the stories to your best friend. Sit down with your child or grandchild and ask them what they remember. And if you’re reading one of these and suddenly find yourself thinking about something from your own childhood, tell me about it. I want to hear it.

Because that’s what GreatfulMoments.com has always been about for me. Stories. Memories. Family. Faith. The things that make us stop for a minute and say, “I’m grateful, thankful and blessed that I remember that.”

So let’s take a little trip back. Not because we want to live in the past. But because sometimes looking back helps us notice what is still worth carrying forward. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll discover that being bored wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

Come on, Buttercup. Pull up a chair. Let’s remember together. Then let’s share this series with our friends and family.
