What If I Was a Place?

As much as I love asking ChatGPT a question and it picking out a answer for each of us my favorite part is when it add’s us all together and tells us what my family is. Join me for Part D: of What If I Was a Place? The Family. Then leave me a comment and let me know what you think of ChatGPT’s answer.

I’ve asked what physical place ChatGPT would choose for each person. I’ve looked at our immediate family. I’ve looked at family and friends. I’ve even given the dogs their own section.

Now comes the final question. If our entire family were one physical place, what would we be? ChatGPT’s answer surprised me because it wasn’t something fancy. It wasn’t a famous landmark. It wasn’t a vacation destination. It wasn’t a giant house. It wasn’t a castle. It wasn’t anything glamorous at all. ChatGPT chose:

ChatGPT chose a family kitchen table because a kitchen table is where everybody has a place. It is where people eat. It is where people talk. It is where plans are made. It is where stories are told.

It is where arguments happen and sometimes get worked out. It is where holidays happen. It is where ordinary days happen. A kitchen table can become a classroom. A game table. A workspace. An office. A place for homework. A place for family meetings.

And sometimes, when someone is no longer there, an empty chair becomes part of the table’s story. A kitchen table isn’t simply furniture. Over the years, it becomes a record of the people who have gathered around it.

It holds the fingerprints of family life. It holds the conversations. It holds the laughter. It holds the tears. It holds the meals. It holds the memories. And that’s why ChatGPT chose the kitchen table for our family.

My ThoughtsChatGPT absolutely got this one right. Our kitchen table has been so many things. At one time just as it was in my childhood it was the place where everyone ate dinner and would thank the LORD for the day and the things that happened.

It was where we homeschooled. It is where we’ve played board games. Half the time, we watch television there. It used to be my office. We sit there and talk. At times we’ve used it as a pillow.

David and I make plans for the week there. I’ve had some of my best conversations with Charlie there. I’ve had conversations with Bradley there. And my dad used to sit there and tell stories.

It’s where we’ve eaten with friends and family. It’s where we’ve celebrated holidays. It’s where we’ve made memories. And yes, it’s where we’ve argued and gotten mad at each other.

But it’s also where David or Charlie would come sit with me and try to talk things out. That’s what makes a kitchen table a family place. It’s not that everybody is always happy around it.

It’s that everybody has a place around it. And now there is another part of that table that makes it even more important to me. My dad’s chair is still at the end of the kitchen table. He’s no longer here. But that chair is still there.

And it isn’t going anywhere. Maybe someday Charlie will have his own house and decide to kidnap the chair for himself. But until then, that chair stays exactly where it belongs. And the table stays, too.

Even though we live in a tiny two-bedroom apartment. Even though there are times when we desperately need the extra space. Even though sometimes I look around and think, “We really need to move this thing.”

I’m not getting rid of it. Because you can’t measure the value of a kitchen table by how much floor space it takes up. You measure it by how many lives have happened around i with who and when.

Our table has been a classroom. A dining room. A game room. An office. A meeting place. A storytelling place. A holiday table. A place to make plans. A place to solve problems. A place to laugh. A place to cry. A place to remember. And a place where new memories are still being made.

The memories were made there yesterday. They’re being made there today. And they’ll be made there tomorrow. That’s why, if ChatGPT asks me what physical place our family would be, I agree completely. Although, I also think a front porch is us. What do you think and why?

We are the kitchen table. Because a family doesn’t have to have the biggest house, the fanciest furniture, or the perfect amount of space. Sometimes all a family really needs is a table where everybody has a place.

And as long as there’s a chair for you, a chair for me, a chair for David, a chair for Charlie, a place for the people we love, and a little room somewhere underneath for the dogs to get into trouble… there’s still a home.

What If I Was…? Sometimes the best way to learn about ourselves isn’t to ask who we are. Sometimes it’s to ask where we would be. And sometimes the answer is sitting right in front of us.

Do you think ChatGPT was right about my family or would you have chosen another place and why?

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
