Earlier today I shared the first part of our series What If and in it I shared my immediate family. Now I would like to share Part B: What If I Was a Place? Part B: Family & Friends. In this question I asked ChatGPT to choose an actual physical place for our immediate family.
Not a city. Not a town. Not a state. A real place you could walk into, sit down in, or visit. Now we’re moving into Part B: Family & Friends. This section includes Gerald, Debbie, and Renee.
As before, I’m giving you ChatGPT’s complete reasoning first, followed by my thoughts. Because the fun isn’t simply hearing what ChatGPT picked. It’s seeing whether I agree. Then asking you to leave a comment and let us know your thoughts.
Gerald — ChatGPT chose a fishing dock for Gerald because a dock is a quiet place. It is away from the noise. It is a place where someone can sit without having to constantly interact with other people.
You can watch the water. You can think. You can talk if you want to. Or you can sit quietly and not say anything at all. A fishing dock can also represent memories of childhood, family, and simpler times.
And Gerald doesn’t necessarily have to be an avid fisherman for the place to fit him. The dock represents peace, privacy, and a place where nobody is bothering you. A place from our childhood.
My Thoughts– I laughed when I first saw this because I would have thought David would be the fishing dock. But then I thought about Gerald. He could sit there quietly. Nobody would be around him. Nobody would bother him. He wouldn’t have to deal with people.
And then I remembered that my dad used to take us fishing when we were kids. So maybe there really is a little bit of family history in this one, too. I’m not sure Gerald would actually fish. But I can definitely picture him sitting on that dock. And maybe that’s the point.
Do you think this place fits Gerald or is there somewhere else you would choose and why?
Debbie — ChatGPT chose a cozy kitchen for Debbie because a kitchen represents warmth, family, food, conversation, baking, and being surrounded by people you love. But the deeper meaning isn’t necessarily about being the person doing all the cooking.
A kitchen table is a place where people gather. There may be baking happening nearby. There may be food being prepared. There may be recipes. But most importantly, there are people. It is a place for conversations, laughter, family stories, and spending time together. So the kitchen becomes less about cooking and more about connection.
My Thoughts; This one made me laugh. Debbie does like to bake. But she is not the cook in our family. I’ve always been the cooker. I did the holidays. I collected the recipes. I was the one always making the food and putting everything together.
Debbie cooked once in a while, especially when my parents were visiting because my apartment, was to little for everyone to fit in it comfortably. I don’t know if that would describe her as the family chef.
And as far as recipes being passed around? I’m the one who likes to collect the recipes and things. I give them to her. What she does with them after that, I have no idea. 😂 But I can see her sitting at a dining room table talking with the people she loves. So I’m keeping the cozy kitchen table idea. Just don’t expect Debbie to cook dinner or even have anything for you to drink.

Renee — ChatGPT chose a library for Renee because a library is filled with information, possibilities, projects, ideas, and things waiting to be discovered. It is a quiet place where someone can research.
It is a place where you can sit in a corner and work without a lot of distractions. And a library can represent the beginning of a new chapter. You go there looking for information, answers, inspiration, or something you didn’t know you needed. It represents curiosity and the willingness to figure things out.
My Thoughts– Life is funny because I honestly don’t even know if Renee reads. But I do. Which is why at first I thought, “A library?” But then I thought about what she’s doing right now and her new business she’s getting ready to launch.
And suddenly I could picture her sitting in a quiet corner of a library, researching projects, looking things up, figuring things out, and working on something new. So maybe it isn’t about books. Maybe it’s about research and possibilities. And that makes the library make a lot more sense.

What Did We Learn?– Three people. Three places. And three completely different ways of looking at a person. Gerald’s fishing dock is about peace. Debbie’s kitchen table is about connection. Renee’s library is about discovery. And that’s exactly why I enjoy asking questions like this.
Sometimes we know somebody so well that we only see them one way. A silly question like “What physical place would you be?” can make us look at them from another angle. And sometimes that little change in perspective is enough to make us say: “You know what? Maybe ChatGPT was onto something.”
