David has been off the past couple days as we tried to get our home cleaned and organized and the new grill set up. While running errands with David yesterday I sat in the car while David went in and fee the cat he is watching.
I was on Facebook and a quiz popped up asking us what Country Songs we knew. I passed the quiz with flying colors because I grew up on class country music thanks to the my family.
That got me to thinking about a new question in our series. I decided to ask ChatGPT What If My Family Were Classic Country Songs? This turned out to be a whole lot more fun than I expected:
Join me as I share the answers ChatGPT showed for my family answering the question if my family were classic country songs? Come share your thoughts on the answer with me and remember I didn’t choose the songs. ChatGPT did.
Once ChatGPT choose there answers I went through the choices, thought about the people they were connected to, I remembered family stories, and decided whether I thought ChatGPT got each person right.
Some songs were immediately familiar. Some were songs I hadn’t heard in a long time so I had to go to YouTube and listen to the songs which was fun. Some of the songs made me say, “Yes! You got that one!”
Others made me scratch my head and say, “Okay, ChatGPT. I’m going to need to listen to that one first.” And honestly, that’s what made this so much fun. Because this isn’t a list of songs I picked for my family. It’s a look at what ChatGPT saw in each of us—and then my honest reaction to whether I thought it was right.
I always ask ChatGPT to begin with David because he is the head of our family. For David — ChatGPT choose “Family Tradition” by Hank Williams. The reason ChatGPT chose the song “Family Tradition” for David was because David is the head of the household which ChatGPT knew from things I’ve shared in the past.
He’s a worker. He’s a provider. He’s somebody who takes his responsibilities seriously. He’s a traditional kind of man, especially when it comes to family. And yes, I agree with that.
David takes being the head of the household seriously. He works hard, takes care of his family, and has always been somebody we can count on. Then I added something ChatGPT didn’t know when it made the choice.
David absolutely adores Hank Williams Jr. That wasn’t part of ChatGPT’s original reason. I hadn’t told ChatGPT that before it chose the song. But when I told ChatGPT afterward, I thought, “Well, now you’ve really got this one!”
It fits David because of the way he approaches his family. And finding out that Hank Williams Jr. is one of David’s favorite singers makes it even better. Although, just for the record, David’s all-time favorite singer is Stevie Ray Vaughan.
As I read through ChatGPT’s answer I wanted to let you know I agree with ChatGPT choice. But when I started thinking about our entire family, I realized “Family Tradition” could actually represent all of us.
Because that’s what we are: Family. We have traditions. We have stories. We have memories. We have things that have been passed down from one generation to another—not only through my family, but through David’s family as well.
So David may have gotten “Family Tradition” as his song, but I think ChatGPT may have accidentally found our family song, too. Jut like Hank Willam’s say All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight that is our family and its why Family Tradition fits David to a T.

Charlie — ChatGPT chose “On the Road Again” for Charlie.- The reason ChatGPT chose “On the Road Again” by Willie Nelson for Charlie was because Charlie is growing into his own life.
He has his own way of doing things and his own interests. He’s creative, a photographer, a gamer, a streamer, and yes, he loves technology. He’s not the little boy we used to watch running around the house anymore.
Charlie is becoming a young man who is figuring out where his own road is going to take him. And ChatGPT said they can see that in Charlie? I just wish he would figure out where and to get another job.
Then I thought about Charlie and the song On The Road Again– As a mom, I thought about Charlie and “On the Road Again” as his song. I know I can sing this song to you with my eyes closed because it’s not just part of our musical journey. It’s part of the trips we’ve taken throughout the years.
And once I started thinking about it, it led to many, many family connections with my family. Willie Nelson has been part of our family’s musical memories for years. I’ve told you about the Willie and Annie cookbook I bought for my mother-in-law.
I’ve thought about the move Honeysuckle Rose and the fact that I don’t think Charlie has ever seen it. And then there’s Grandma. Willie Nelson was the only man Grandma was ever going to marry other than Charlie’s PaPa.
So Willie Nelson already has a place in our family story. But then I started thinking about Charlie himself. I’ve watched him grow from a little boy into a young man. I’ve watched him discover the things he’s good at.
I’ve watched him become more independent. I’ve watched his creativity. I’ve watched him become a photographer, a gamer and a streamer. Now, I watch him climb into his car and say come on mom let’s go to Walmart and I start to hum On The Road Again as we take off on our adventure. And every single day with Charlie is a little different because he’s still changing, growing and maturing.
After listening to it three times, I had my answer “On the Road Again” I totally saw it. I totally agree with ChatGPT. Would this necessarily have been the song I would have chosen for Charlie? Maybe not.
But here’s the funny thing: I honestly don’t know what song I would choose. Charlie and I have several songs we love together, including Selena’s songs and other songs that belong to our memories.
But if you asked me right now to pick one song that represents Charlie, I honestly don’t know what I would choose. And I’m not even sure David would know. Because each and every day with Charlie is a different day.
He’s changing. He’s growing. He’s maturing. He’s becoming his own person. And maybe that’s exactly why “On the Road Again” works. Because one day we may get Dr. Jeykl and the next day we may get Mr. Hyde. Is your teen like this?
Do I agree with ChatGPT? Yes. After listening to the song multiple times and singing it out loud, I totally see it and totally agree with this choice. And now it has me thinking: What song would I choose for Charlie? I honestly don’t know. Maybe that’s something Charlie and I will have to discover together. Or we might have to ask David what he think.

Me — ChatGPT chose “Coat of Many Colors” for me by Dolly Parton—who is one of the women I most admire in the world— and they said they choose this song because this was showing my life isn’t just one thing.
As ChatGPT pointed out, I’ve lived through many different experiences, and all of those experiences have become part of the person I am today. ChatGPT reminded me that I’ve had happy times and difficult times.
I’ve experienced motherhood, family, love, loss, laughter and everything in between. And ChatGPT reminded me that all of those experiences have become part of my story. They’ve helped shape me. They’ve helped make me the person I am today. And when ChatGPT explained the choice that way, I knew their choice was right on.
Now here’s my side of the story.– I didn’t choose “Coat of Many Colors.” ChatGPT chose it for me. If I had been asked to choose my own song, I probably would have chosen the song I use as my motto which is “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten or a Jelly Roll song because he is my spirit animal as I’ve said in the past.
But I can see why ChatGPT chose Dolly Parton. I am who I am because of the things I’ve lived through. I’ve had happy seasons. I’ve had difficult seasons. Just as I’m sure you’ve had.
I’ve experienced motherhood, family, friendship, love, laughter, loss and everything between. Those experiences have become part of my story. They have helped shape me. They have helped make me the person I am today. And ultimately, they are part of why the Lord God is my Savior and my best friend, along with the people I love most in this world.
Do I agree with ChatGPT? Yes. Would I have chosen this song? Probably not. But after hearing ChatGPT’s reasoning, I understand it. And I think Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” is a beautiful way to describe a life made up of many different pieces. Dolly herself has described the song as being rooted in her mother’s love and the idea that her family possessed a richness greater than money. This is what my life is as well.

Suzanne — ChatGPT chose “The Dance” for Suzanne: The reason ChatGPT chose “The Dance” was because Suzanne’s life was a journey that was far too short, but the love and memories she left behind are worth everything.
My reaction: There is more to Suzanne’s story than that, though. One of her best friends Brandon was called home just two weeks before she was. Angie was one of her teachers at Haltom Middle School and Brandon’s mom. The Dance is Angie and Brandon’s song.
And yes, “The Dance” fits Suzanne to a T. But when I think of Suzanne’s music, there are other songs that immediately come to mind. She loved “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” more than anything.
That doesn’t necessarily fit her life, but it was the song she loved. Then there’s “Butterfly Kisses.” That was the last song I ever sang to Suzanne when she was 16. And at her funeral, we played “The Perfect Fan,” which my nephew picked. So Suzanne’s story isn’t just one song. Different songs hold different memories and they all fit her.
Do I agree with ChatGPT? Yes. “The Dance” fits Suzanne. But it isn’t the only song that belongs to her story. Now, I have a question for you do you think we can have more than one song to describe our lives or not?

Gerald — ChatGPT chose “Take Me Home, Country Roads” because it connected Gerald with home, family roots and the feeling of belonging somewhere. The question is does he belong her in Texas or back in Oklahoma?
My reaction: Of course I know this song. How could I not? “Take Me Home, Country Roads” is one of those songs that feels like home. It’s a song that has been part of my childhood listening to it in my Grandmother Dories home.
Do I agree with ChatGPT? Yes. I can understand why ChatGPT connected Gerald with a song about home. Because he is a homebody that loves his family even when he doesn’t want to admit it.

Debbie — “ChatGPT chose “Coal Miner’s Daughter” for Debbie because they connected the song with family roots, people who worked in the mines and the sacrifices connected to that life.
My reaction– This one is complicated because I want to make sure I tell the family story correctly. The coal-mining history is connected to David’s family. Loretta Lynn lived down the street from David’s family in Butcher Hollow.
David’s family worked in the mines, and that history is part of their family story. My sister is David’s sister-in-law, so it isn’t simply my sister’s family history. And Grandma Sherry adopted Debbie.
So there are several family connections here. I can understand why ChatGPT saw the connection. But I’m not sure I would say this song perfectly describes Debbie. What do you think and why?
Do I agree with ChatGPT? I’m still thinking about this one. Although when David was younger she would have reminded you of Dolly Parton because she is tiny but has a big personality and life Dolly she was very stylish.
But I couldn’t see her wearing a coat of many colors could you? But Charlie and I would and we would be proud to show that coat off everywhere we went. How about you? Would you want a coat of many colors?

Renee — ChatGPT chose “Stand by Your Man” because it connected Renee with being someone who stands beside the people she loves. Which she does without a doubt. The choice was about loyalty, commitment, and being there for the people who matter to her.
My reaction– This one made me stop and think. Because if ChatGPT is going to choose “Stand by Your Man” for Renee, there has to be more to the choice than just the title. What was ChatGPT seeing in Renee?
Why this song? Why Tammy Wynette? Those are the questions I want to understand. I can see the idea of standing beside somebody you love. But I’m not sure the title alone tells Renee’s whole story.
And that’s one of the things I have discovered while doing this experiment. Sometimes ChatGPT gives me a song and I immediately understand it. Other times, I have to sit with it for a while.
Do I agree with ChatGPT? Maybe. I’m not ready to say ChatGPT got this one completely right. But that’s okay. I’m going to leave the choice here and let myself think about it some more.

Bear’s song ChatGPT chose was“A Boy Named Sue” because Bear Bear has a strong personality. He’s tough. He’s protective. He’s watchful. And he takes his job as protector of the family seriously.
My reaction: This one has an interesting family connection because “A Boy Named Sue” was Suzanne’s favorite Johnny Cash song. Suzanne loved Johnny Cash. Just as my parents did.
So now Bear Bear has one of Suzanne’s favorite songs connected to him. And that makes the choice mean something different to me. It’s not necessarily just about whether Bear Bear resembles the character in the song. It’s also about the fact that Johnny Cash already belongs to our family’s musical memories because of Suzanne.
Not only that my mom’s middle name is Sue. More times than not on the days I’m missing Suzzane you will hear me listening to and singing this song out loud. Or David may be playing Johhny Cash CD in the car.
Do I agree with ChatGPT?– Yes. Especially because of that Suzanne connection. I may not have picked this song myself, but ChatGPT found a connection I wouldn’t have thought about. And sometimes that’s exactly what this experiment is supposed to do.

Phoebe — ChatGPT chose “Crazy” for Phoebe. ChatGPT chose “Crazy” by Patsy Cline for Phoebe. And I have to admit, my first reaction was: Phoebe isn’t really crazy. She’s quiet. She’s deep. She has her own personality.
So I knew there had to be more behind ChatGPT’s choice than simply thinking Phoebe was a little crazy. If I had picked out Pasty Cline and Crazy I would have picked it out for my sister because she is her favorite singer but Sandy is a lot like my sister so after thinking about that I have to agree this song does fit Pheobie.
My reaction- If I were choosing a song for Pheobie I would have also picked out a Patsy Cline song for Phoebe, because Patsy was strong. She was a woman. She knew her mind. And Phoebe is like that.
Phoebe knows what she wants. She’s quiet, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a strong personality. Then there’s another funny family connection. My Mimi was Crazy Mimi.
And if Mimi were still here, I think she would have loved Phoebe. So there is a connection to the word “crazy” in our family that makes me smile. But does that mean “Crazy” is the perfect song for Phoebe? I’m not sure.
Do I agree with ChatGPT? Maybe. I can see one side of the choice. But I’m not completely convinced yet. And that’s okay. I don’t have to agree with every choice ChatGPT makes which makes these questions more fun.

Sandy — ChatGPT chose “You’re Lookin’ at Country” for Sandy because it saw Sandy as a country girl at heart. I really believe this is true because Sandy loves being able to go outside and run and run and run.
My reaction– But that immediately made me ask: How does ChatGPT know Sandy is a country girl? I never told ChatGPT that. So why did it see that in her? Well, after thinking about it, I can actually see where ChatGPT was coming from.
Sandy not only needs a yard I bet you if she could talk she would say she wants a yard.. She needs grass. She needs somewhere to run. She needs space to be outside. That’s definitely a country-girl quality!
But there’s so much more to Sandy than that. Sandy has a voice. She sings. She sings a lot. Sometimes she even sings when she should be sleeping. So maybe ChatGPT saw something in Sandy that I hadn’t put into words yet.
Do I agree with ChatGPT?– Maybe, I definitely agree that Sandy needs a yard and grass. But I’m not sure yet whether “You’re Lookin’ at Country” is her perfect song. That’s something I’ll have to think about.

Gunner — ChatGPT chose “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” for Gunner because Gunner has that country-boy spirit. But once again, I had a question: How does ChatGPT know that? I never told ChatGPT Gunner was a country boy. So what did it see?
My reaction– Gunner is a bully dog and before you ask me what is a bully dog I have no, clue. He’s got a big personality. He’s strong. And right now, we’re fostering him for a month.
He comes to us a couple of times a year, so I’m sure being in a different house can be confusing. He’s trying to figure out where he is, what’s happening, and who is going to take care of him.
So when I think about Gunner, I don’t immediately think cowboy. That’s why I’m not completely sure about this choice. If ChatGPT sees a country-boy spirit in him, I’d love to know what made it see that
Do I agree with ChatGPT? Maybe. Maybe not. I’m not ready to call this one a perfect match. But that’s okay. That’s part of what makes this experiment fun. ChatGPT doesn’t always have to be right. Sometimes it gives me a choice that makes me stop and think.

And That’s Our Country Music Experiment– And there you have it. ChatGPT picked a country song for each of us. Some were obvious. Some surprised me. Some made me laugh. Some made me think about people I’ve lost. Some brought back childhood memories.
And some made me discover songs I didn’t even realize I knew. But the biggest thing I learned is that I don’t have to agree with ChatGPT. That’s actually the fun of this challenge and why I hope you will join us.
You don’t have to do anything ChatGPT makes the choice. We listen to the song. We think about the person. We remember the stories. And then we decide whether ChatGPT got it right.
Sometimes the answer is absolutely yes. Sometimes it’s maybe. And sometimes I’m still scratching my head. But every song gives me another reason to remember somebody I love.
