The other night David wasn’t feeling well so he asked Charlie to pick up dinner if he sent him money. Charlie said he would. I was working and still not dressed to leave the house when Charie comes into the office and says come on mom we need to go get dinner.
This allowed my Charlie & Mom adventure to continue from the night before, and let me tell you, this one took a few unexpected turns. We were driving down the street, and we passed Cane’s.
I looked over at Charlie and asked: “Where are we going?” He looked at me like this was the most obvious thing in the world and said: “I wanted to go to Walmart.” Well, okay then! Apparently, Charlie had decided he wanted to look at hair dye because we’ve been talking about him changing his hair back to pink.
He’s got that white section in his hair right now, and he’s been talking about having some fun with the color before eventually letting it go back to brown. So naturally, Mom was interested.
Because let’s be honest… I wanted to see him dye his hair pink. Not only would I get to see it, but I’d get some new content out of the whole adventure! Unfortunately, Charlie had other plans.
He left his wallet in the car. Now, as a mother, I was actually pretty proud of him. He went into Walmart knowing exactly what he wanted to look at, but without his wallet, there was no temptation to buy anything.
Very responsible. But it completely defeated my purpose. I wanted the pink hair! So we looked, talked about it, and eventually left Walmart without the hair dye. And our adventure continued.
Since we were already out and getting hungry, we headed down Rufe Snow to find a Wing store we knew was there. We pull in and its Buffalo Wild Wings and we couldn’t remember if it was the same one David usually goes to over on Denton Highway or not.
Charlie decided not to go in and we went over to Cane’s. That became our dinner stop, which turned into the food review I shared with you. I got my Box Combo. Charlie got his Caniac.
I traded my coleslaw for extra bread because, as I have already established: Cane’s bread is AMAZING. I sacrificed Chick Fil A because they were busy and Charlie didn’t have to use more gas with us getting food at the same restaurant.
We ate, talked, laughed, and enjoyed our one-on-one time together. But our adventure wasn’t over. Because then we had to head over to Buffalo Wild Wings for David and Gerald’s dinner.
After finding Buffalo Wild Wings on Rufe Snow and going on over to Denton Highway we discovered they were the same restaurant. That was okay with me because it gave me extra time with Charlie.
Sometimes you can drive around town long enough that everything starts looking like a completely different restaurant. But we made it. And as we were walking through the door, I noticed something that immediately caught my attention.
Five FREE Wings! Apparently, if you sign up for the Buffalo Wild Wings app, you can get five free wings. Well… Guess who’s signing up before our next visit? Me! I love finding those little deals after we’ve already decided we’re going back.
We walk in. Charlie looks at me. And says: “Order.” I looked at him. He looked at me. And we both realized the problem. I don’t know what to order! I don’t even eat wings! So what did I do? I called Gerald.
Because if I’m going to stand there looking at a menu full of wing flavors, I need somebody who actually knows what they’re talking about. I started going through all the different flavors and choices. And that’s when the fun began.
Charlie ordered 10-piece boneless wings with fries for David. We went with the mild flavor for him. And because David wasn’t feeling well last night, those wings went straight into the refrigerator when we got home.
So he’s got dinner waiting for him tonight. Or, knowing this family, Charlie might end up helping him with them. Either way, nobody has to figure out dinner tonight. And honestly, that’s exactly why we went out to get food in the first place. David wasn’t feeling good, and we wanted to make sure he had something to eat.
But Let’s Talk About Those Fries! Buffalo Wild Wings has some really good fries. I didn’t get the seasoning put on them because sometimes they can put a little too much seasoning on them for my taste.
But even without all that extra seasoning? I could eat those fries for dinner. And that’s saying something because I don’t even eat wings! Give me a basket of those fries and I’m good.
Of course, I’m also trying to watch what I eat, so I had to remind myself: “You don’t need extra fries.” But let’s be honest. Who can really turn down fries? Not me! The Lord knows I like fries.
Gerald went with lemon pepper. And this time, instead of getting boneless like he had the last time, I got him bone-in wings. And he told me that’s actually what he prefers. The lemon pepper was perfect for him.
It wasn’t overloaded with seasoning. It had enough flavor without being too much. And Gerald says lemon pepper is his favorite. Although he did mention that he might venture out and try another flavor next time. We’ll see. Once you find a flavor you love, it’s hard to convince somebody to experiment!
Here’s the funny part. I don’t really eat wings. But I was looking through that menu. And I started thinking maybe I should try something. If it wasn’t a hickory-smoked barbecue flavor, I might actually consider trying some. Or I could get some naked wings and add my own sauce when we get home..
The naked ones caught my attention because they reminded me of little chicken legs. And they immediately made me think about the old Long John Silver’s “peg legs” we used to have when I was a kid.
Does anybody else remember those? That little food memory sent me down a completely different road. And then I started looking at some of the other flavors. There was a Hawaiian flavor that made me stop and think.
I wondered if it might taste something like the sweet-and-sour chicken my grandmother used to make. And now I’m curious. Could I get David to try that one someday? I don’t know.
That’s a conversation for another day. But that’s one of the things I like about looking at a menu. Sometimes you discover something you didn’t even know you might want to try one day.
One thing my family really liked about Buffalo Wild Wings was that the food was cooked to order. We weren’t getting something that had been sitting around waiting for somebody to pick it up.
The wings were cooked after we ordered them. That meant they were piping hot when we got home. And that’s important when you’re bringing food home. There’s nothing worse than getting home with dinner and finding out everything is already cold.
These were hot and fresh. David’s mild boneless wings were cooked perfectly. Gerald’s bone-in lemon pepper wings were cooked perfectly. And the flavor was just right for him and like me he loved the Fries.
Would We Go Back? I think so. Especially now that I know about the five free wings for signing up for the app. That’s definitely something I’m going to take advantage of before our next visit.
And now I know where the Rufe Snow location is. Although apparently, I already knew where it was. I just didn’t know I knew where it was! Isn’t that funny how that happens? That shows you we eat out to much when you can’t remember where a resturant is.
But Again, This Wasn’t Really About the Wings Just like Cane’s, this was another part of our Charlie & Mom adventure. We started out going to Walmart to look at pink hair dye. Charlie left his wallet in the car, so we didn’t buy anything. Mom was secretly disappointed because I wanted that pink hair content.
Then we went to Cane’s. Then we went to Buffalo Wild Wings. We drove around. We listened to music. We talked. We figured out dinner. We called Gerald for flavor advice. And somewhere along the way, we made another ordinary evening into a memory.
That’s what I love about these little adventures. They aren’t planned vacations. They aren’t expensive outings. Sometimes they’re just: “Mom, let’s go.” And I say: “Okay, let’s go.” No, matter the time of day or night or what I’m doing I go.
And About Those Fries… I have to admit something. I had my Cane’s fries. So I didn’t need the Buffalo Wild Wings fries. And that’s probably a good thing because we’re trying to make better choices and watch what we’re eating.
But… Who can turn down fries? Seriously. Not me. I’ll try. I’ll tell myself I don’t need them. I’ll even say out loud: “I don’t need another fry.” And then somebody puts a basket of hot fries in front of me. And suddenly all my good intentions disappear. So let’s just say I exercised some restraint. Some.
Our Buffalo Wild Wings Thoughts; Chicken: Fresh and cooked to order. Fries: Really good, and even better without all the extra seasoning for my taste. Gerald’s Lemon Pepper: A hit! He says it’s his favorite. David’s Mild Boneless Wings: Cooked just right and waiting in the refrigerator.
Hawaiian: Now I’m curious! Cane’s vs. Buffalo Wild Wings: Completely different meals, but both gave us something good to bring home. Would we go back? Absolutely — especially after I sign up for those five free wings! And maybe… just maybe… next time I’ll try a wing. Or maybe I’ll just order the fries.
Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
