I haven’t been feeling that well this week so it seems like forever I sat down and did something that was fun just for me. Then I thought about the What If Questions I’ve been asking ChatGPT. I thought we might take a little trip Into the Hundred Acre Wood which is where Winnie the Pooh and his friends live.

For my family sometimes a simple question brings back a memory you didn’t even realize you were carrying. Which is what has been happening as I’ve been working on our “What If I Was…?” series, and after thinking about which Disney characters would fit the people in our family, I started wondering something else:

What if the Cates family lived in the Hundred Acre Wood? Who would we be? Would we be Pooh? Why? Who would Tigger be? Why? Who would Eeyore be? Why What about Piglet and Rabbit?

And then I remembered something that made this question even more special. When the kids were little, our family actually picked our own Winnie the Pooh characters. I was Eeyore. My sister was Winnie the Pooh. Suzanne was Tigger and David Michael was Piglet.

So this isn’t just a personality game. It’s also a little piece of our family history. And when I started matching everyone today, I couldn’t help but smile at how many of these personalities still seem to fit.

Me — Eeyore– I have to start with Eeyore because that’s who I chose when I was younger. And Eeyore has always been my favorite Winnie the Pooh character. He’s thoughtful, loyal, sometimes a little dry, and much more tenderhearted than he lets people see.

But there’s another funny connection here. When I started matching everyone today, I originally thought I might be Kanga because of the nurturing, family-centered part of my personality.

And I can see that. But when it comes down to it? I’m still Eeyore. Maybe some things really don’t change.

David — Eeyore– David being Eeyore makes me laugh because Eeyore is my favorite character—and David is one of my favorite people. David is steady, loyal, dependable, and doesn’t need to be the center of attention.

He’s simply there. And sometimes that’s the greatest kind of person to have in your life. So yes, David is Eeyore. And apparently, there can be more than one Eeyore in our family. Can’t there?

What do you think. Is David Eeyore or am I? Or are we both Eeyore?

Charlie — Tigger- He’s energetic, creative, independent, and always doing something. Tigger doesn’t sit still for long. He bounces into life. Charlie has that same energy and that same ability to follow his own ideas.

But there’s an interesting twist to this one. Because the person I originally thought of as Tigger was actually Suzanne. And that brings us to…

Do you think Charlie is Tigger or is he someone else?

Suzanne — Tigg– Not just because Tigger is fun. Not just because Tigger bounces. But because Tigger was Suzanne’s favorite character. And Suzanne never seemed to stop. She was always bouncing, moving, doing something, and bringing energy into the room.

So there really isn’t any question. Suzanne is Tigger. And now there’s another little connection that makes me smile. Sandy reminds me of Suzanne. Sandy bounces. Sandy has opinions.

Sandy is stubborn. Sandy makes herself known. And sometimes watching Sandy makes me think of Suzanne. So perhaps Tigger didn’t disappear from our family. Maybe she just showed up in a new form.

Do you think Suzzane is Tigger or is Sandy?

Gerald- is Rabbit because he likes things done a certain way. He notices things. He has opinions. And he isn’t afraid to share them. But underneath all of that is someone who cares deeply about his little community.

I can definitely see Gerald in Rabbit. Can you?

Debbie — Owl And this one became even more special when I thought about our family history. My mom used to collect owls when she was younger. My sister and I still collect them. So somehow Owl already has a little place in our family. Owl is thoughtful, knowledgeable, and always seems to have something to say or a story to tell. That makes Debbie a pretty wonderful Owl. Doesn’t it?

Is Debbie Owl or somethig else?

Renee — Christopher Robin– Christopher Robin can be the person everyone follows. He’s part of the group, but he also understands all the different personalities around him. He can step into the Hundred Acre Wood and somehow become part of everyone’s story.

I can see that in Renee. Can you?

Sandy — Tigger– Yes, I know we’ve already given Tigger to Suzanne. But Sandy deserves this one, too. She bounces. She makes noise. She’s stubborn. She’s energetic. She has opinions. And she definitely does things her own way.

But now that I think about how much Sandy reminds me of Suzanne, I actually love this match even more. It’s almost like Sandy carries a tiny reminder of Suzanne with her.

Bear Bear — Winnie the Pooh This one feels easy. Bear Bear is sweet. He’s loving. He’s comforting. He’s loyal. And he just wants to be part of the family. There’s something about Pooh that makes people feel safe and loved. That’s Bear Bear.

What do you think. Is Bear Winnie the Pooh?

Gunner — Roo– Playful. Curious. Affectionate. Ready to be part of whatever adventure is happening. Roo has that happy, youthful energy that makes him hard not to love. I think Gunner fits right into that spot.

Phoebe — Rabbit’s Best-Kept Secret– I didn’t want to force Phoebe into a character simply because we had a list to finish. So I’m giving her a special place: Phoebe is Rabbit’s best-kept secret. She’s her own little character. Sometimes the people—and pets—we love don’t fit neatly into one box. They simply belong. And Phoebe belongs.

Don’t you agree?

Maybe that’s why people love Winnie the Pooh because The Hundred Acre Wood has room for everybody. There’s room for the bouncy ones. The quiet ones. The worriers. The thinkers. The dreamers. The organizers. The hungry ones. The adventurers. And the ones who simply make the place feel like home.

Looking back, I think maybe that’s why our family chose our characters when we were younger. We weren’t just choosing cartoon characters. We were recognizing little pieces of ourselves.

I was Eeyore. My sister was Pooh. Suzanne was Tigger. David Michael was Piglet. And now, years later, I’m looking at our family again and finding those same little pieces of personality in all of us.

Maybe that’s the real magic of Winnie the Pooh. The characters change. The stories change. We grow older. But some things—and some people—we carry with us forever. So if the Cates family lived in the Hundred Acre Wood, I think we’d fit right in.

And knowing us, there would probably be plenty of bouncing, a little bit of chaos, some good stories, and definitely something to eat. Just like every good family gathering. Come and join us in The Hundred Acre Woods and let’s see who you are.
