I don’t know if you have a Sonic in your area or not but in ours we have them all over. I thank the LORD for Sonic because they have the best Ice ever. On Tuesday evenings we know we may be having Sonic for dinner because they do 1/2 price Hamburgers. On #Halloween the Corny Dogs used to be 50cents but may be a $1 know. Which is fine because I can feed my family of 4 for $10 making our grocery budget stretch.
I like eating at Sonic because it is one of those places where everybody in our family can find something they like, which is probably why we keep going back. Even Suzzane had her favorite meal here when she was alive which was Chili Cheese Tater Tots which she introduced me to and now its my favorite snack from Sonic.
My family especially likes going in the afternoon during happy hour. Around 2:30 to 3:30, Charlie can get a Route 44 drink for half price, which makes that huge drink a pretty good deal. And if you’ve ever seen a Route 44, you know exactly why I say huge! In fact more times than not it last me two days.
My favorite drink at Sonic has always been the Cherry Dr. Pepper. I love it! I also like a Cherry Coke, but if I’m choosing my Sonic drink, I’m probably going with the Cherry Dr. Pepper. Charlie is more of an Ocean Water person, although he’ll also drink a plain Dr. Pepper. David likes a Cherry Limeade, and Gerald the Unsweetned Tea which is another one of those Sonic drinks that just seems to belong there.
That’s one of the things I like about Sonic. You can have four people order four completely different things and everybody can still get exactly what they want. The Sonic app is another reason we check in before ordering. They regularly have specials and discounts, and depending on the promotion, you can sometimes find some really good drink deals.
I’ve also had friends tell me about getting drinks for as little as 99 cents through the app, so it’s definitely worth checking before you pull into the drive-in. Again I wanted to remind you about Tuesday nights which are another favorite in our house because after 5 o’clock, we can get the cheeseburger special.
And these aren’t just any cheeseburgers. We all have our own way of ordering them. David likes his cheeseburger with no onions and no tomato’s. Mine is no pickles and no tomatoes. Gerald likes everything on his. Charlie usually doesn’t want any vegetables on his at all but he likes Ketup and Mayo.
That’s one of the things I like about Sonic. You can take the same basic meal and everybody can make it their own. But if you ask me what my favorite thing on the Sonic menu is, I’m not going to say the cheeseburger. I’m going straight for the cheese tater tots. Or, even better, the chili cheese tater tots.
There is just something about those crispy little tater tots covered with cheese and chili that I love. The only thing I have learned is that you need to remind them to add extra cheese or extra chili because sometimes there just isn’t enough.
And if I’m ordering chili cheese, I want to taste the chili and cheese! David has his own Sonic favorite. For him, it’s the chili cheese Corn Dog Mustard. I like a chili cheese dog too, but I have to have mine a certain way. If I’m getting one, I’m putting mayonnaise on it. David wants mustard. Charlie wants mustard. Gerald wants mustard. Apparently I’m the odd one in this family when it comes to chili cheese dogs. And that’s okay.
One of the reasons Sonic works so well for our family is that there are so many choices. You can come for breakfast, lunch, dinner, a snack, a drink, or a late-night treat and find something different. They have breakfast items, burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs, chicken, tater tots, fries, drinks, shakes, and all kinds of other choices.
And sometimes the drinks are the reason we’re going. I used to love getting their cranberry apple juice when I was pregnant. I drank it all the time when I was pregnant with Charlie. Unfortunately, at some point I was told that the apple juice came in a box, so they couldn’t make it the way I wanted anymore.
That was disappointing because it was one of those little things I really enjoyed. But Sonic has so many drink choices including milk shakes that there is usually something else to find. And if you’re a milkshake person, you may want to check the menu later in the evening because they sometimes have milkshake promotions after 8 o’clock.
The biggest thing I would tell anyone going to Sonic is check the app first. The specials can make a big difference, especially if you’re feeding several people. We aren’t necessarily going to Sonic because we want to spend a lot of money. We’re looking for the specials that make it worthwhile for our family.
Happy hour drinks, Tuesday cheeseburger specials, app deals, and whatever promotion happens to be running can turn a regular trip into a much better deal. And that’s really what makes Sonic work for us. Charlie has his favorite. David has his favorite. Gerald has his favorite. And I have mine. We can all order something different and still sit down and enjoy a meal together in the comfort of our home.
For me, though, if you told me I could only order one thing from Sonic, I’d probably choose the chili cheese tater tots with a Cherry Dr. Pepper. Just remember the extra cheese. And maybe the extra chili. Because if I’m going to have chili cheese tater tots, I want enough chili and cheese to actually cover those tater tots!
So now I’m curious.
Do you have a Sonic where you live? What’s your favorite thing to order at Sonic? Are you there for the drinks, the burgers, the chili dogs, the tater tots, the shakes, or something completely different? And do you have a special way you order yours? Because in our family, apparently there is no such thing as just ordering a cheeseburger. Everybody has their own version.
Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
