as we move into a new month I wanted to welcome you to November. For my family there is nothing quite like a busy morning when everyone seems to need something at the same time. Even though Charlie has graduated there is still mornings in my home when someone cannot find their shoes and more times than not that is me, or someone forgets something important, breakfast is running behind if I can even get people to eat, and suddenly the clock seems to be moving faster than anyone expected.
It doesn’t matter if you are getting children ready for school, heading to work, managing a homeschool schedule, or simply trying to get everyone started on the right foot, mornings can sometimes feel overwhelming. At least they can for my family more times than not.
The good news is that mornings do not have to be rushed and stressful every day. A simple routine, a little preparation, and a willingness to give yourself some grace can make a world of difference. Which is something I’m grateful, thankful and blessed for because it keeps the stress and drama down.
While my own son has graduated from high school, I still see the everyday challenges families face through my nieces, nephews, and the many families we are blessed to encourage. David and I know that every family has different schedules, responsibilities, and needs. But one thing we can all benefit from is finding little ways to make everyday life easier. Here are a few simple morning routine ideas that can help your family start the day feeling more prepared and less stressed.
1. Start the Night Before– One of the easiest ways to improve your mornings is to prepare ahead of time. A few minutes in the evening can save a lot of frustration the following morning.
Here are some things families can do before bedtime:
- Choose clothes for the next day.
- Gather backpacks, purses, and work bags.
- Prepare lunches or snacks.
- Set out shoes and jackets.
- Check the family calendar for appointments and activities.
- Gather anything needed for the following day.
It might not seem like much, but those little preparations can make a big difference when morning arrives which can keep drama at bay.
2. Give Everyone a Job– A family routine works best when everyone participates. Depending on their ages, children can have responsibilities that help the household run more smoothly.
Some simple ideas include:
- Putting dirty clothes in the laundry basket.
- Filling water bottles.
- Packing backpacks.
- Choosing outfits.
- Helping prepare breakfast.
- Picking up their belongings before bedtime.
These little responsibilities help children develop independence while teaching teamwork. And remember, families work better when everyone helps rather than expecting one person to do everything.
3. Keep Breakfast Simple– Busy mornings do not always leave time for a big breakfast, and that is okay. Having a few easy breakfast options available can help everyone get something to eat before starting the day.
Some family-friendly ideas include:
- Yogurt and fresh fruit.
- Breakfast sandwiches.
- Homemade muffins.
- Oatmeal.
- Smoothies.
- Toast with favorite toppings.
- Grab-and-go breakfast options.
You do not have to prepare a fancy breakfast every morning. Sometimes the simplest meals are the ones that work best.
4. Build Extra Time Into Your Morning– One thing that can make a busy morning even more stressful is feeling like you are constantly racing against the clock. If possible, give yourself a little extra time. Even an additional 10 or 15 minutes can make room for unexpected moments.
Someone might need help finding something, breakfast might take longer than expected, or plans might change. Having a little breathing room can help everyone feel less rushed. And if you are someone who struggles with mornings, try making small changes instead of completely changing your schedule overnight.
5. Remember That Every Family Is Different– There is no single morning routine that works for every household.
A family with children attending public school may have a completely different schedule from a charter school or online school family. Homeschool families may begin their mornings with breakfast together, household responsibilities, or learning activities at home.
Families with grown children may have different routines altogether. Some parents work early shifts, while others work from home. Some families have several activities scheduled throughout the week, while others enjoy slower mornings. There is no perfect way to organize your day. The best morning routine is the one that works for your family and helps everyone feel prepared.
6. Make Room for Life During the Holidays– As the holidays approach, mornings can become even busier.
Between Thanksgiving preparations, shopping, family gatherings, school activities, work responsibilities, and Christmas planning, it is easy to feel like there is never enough time. This is when having a simple family routine can be especially helpful. Try keeping a family calendar, preparing things the evening before, and making a short list of the most important things that need to get done.
You do not have to accomplish everything in one day. Sometimes the best thing you can do is slow down, enjoy a cup of coffee, spend a few minutes with your family, and remember what matters most. The holidays should be about making memories, not exhausting ourselves trying to make everything perfect.
7. Create Peace Before the Day Begins– The most important part of a morning routine is not perfection. It is creating a home where everyone feels loved, encouraged, and ready to take on a new day.
Some mornings will be messy. God only knows that! Someone will forget something. Plans will change. Breakfast might not turn out the way you expected. That is part of family life. Give yourself grace. Celebrate the little victories. Remember to encourage one another.
And most importantly, make room for faith. Before the busyness of the day takes over, take a moment to pray, reflect, and be thankful for another day. We cannot control everything that happens throughout the day, but we can try to choose how we approach it.
Now, I wanted to give you a little reminder as we start each day. Life is busy, families have responsibilities, and some days are simply harder than others. But we do not have to begin every morning worrying about everything that could go wrong we can stay positive.
We can take things one step at a time, make room for unexpected moments, and remember that we are blessed even when life feels a little chaotic. As we move through November and begin preparing for the holidays, I want to remind myself and our Greatful Moments family of something important:
We are walking in faith, not fear. That does not mean we will never feel afraid or overwhelmed. It means we can turn to God, ask for guidance, and trust Him through the moments we cannot control. You do not need a perfect morning to have a beautiful day. Sometimes all you need is a little preparation, a grateful heart, and the willingness to begin again.
