Double Cheeseburger Macaroni: Our Family Review

Living on one income when grocery shopping for my family meals are built around what we can find on sale more times than not. Which is what happened when I made dinner the other night. Before you say anything yes, I did make dinner.

Being in a hurry I wanted to remind you the best meals are the ones that are inexpensive, easy to make, and somehow keep feeding your family for days. That was definitely the case with the Double Cheeseburger Macaroni Hamburger Helper I recently made.

I originally had my eye on the new Cheesy Ranch Cheeseburger by Hamburger Helper with the twisty noodles. My brother wasn’t sure about the ranch flavor, though. Gerald said to make one box of it and then 2 boxes of another flavor.

I really wasn’t in the mood to make two different Hamburger Helper meals just in case someone didn’t like one of them. So when it came time to choose, he picked the Double Cheeseburger Macaroni.

I’m actually glad he did. We normally make two boxes of Hamburger Helper at a time, but with our family we’ve found that two boxes just aren’t enough anymore. Depending on what we’re making, we’ve started making three or sometimes even four boxes. This time, I made three boxes of Double Cheeseburger Macaroni along with hamburger meat.

And let me tell you—this meal lasted! We ended up having it for at least four days, which is unusual in our house. David had some and said he liked it, although he still prefers the original Cheeseburger Macaroni. Charlie felt the same way and preferred the original.

But I really, really liked the Double Cheeseburger Macaroni. I didn’t eat as much of it as I normally would because I’m trying to be more mindful of how much I’m eating, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it.

Gerald, on the other hand, really loved it. He had it for lunch and dinner several times, and after all of that, we still had about half a bowl left! I’m pretty sure Gerald will finish that for lunch today.

This where we can talk About a Budget-Friendly Meal! One of the things I loved most about this meal was how far it went. I bought 3 single boxes of Double Cheeseburger Macaroni at WinCo for 99 cents each. When I went back yesterday, they had gone up to $1.39 a box, so I’m really glad I bought them when I did.

For three boxes, that meant I paid only about $2.97 for the Hamburger Helper. I also had a three-pound roll of hamburger meat that I had found on clearance at Kroger for about $6.99.

So we’re talking about roughly $10 for the Hamburger Helper and hamburger meat, and that gave us approximately five to eight meals, depending on how we counted individual servings.

For a family, of 4 and 2 of them who eat as much as I don’t think that’s bad at all.

For a family, of 4 and 2 of them who eat as much as David and I do together I didn’t think that was bad at all. In fact, this is exactly the kind of meal I look for when I’m trying to stretch our grocery budget.

It’s inexpensive, easy to prepare, and—at least with this particular flavor—my family was willing to eat the leftovers several days in a row. It’s also a meal Charlie or Gerald could prepare if I was busy.

There is one thing I’ve learned after making Hamburger Helper for years: the directions on the box aren’t necessarily the way my family likes it. The boxes give you measurements for the water and milk, but we don’t always use the exact amounts listed.

I don’t like Hamburger Helper that’s too soupy, so we start with a little water and a little milk and add more as we need it. We keep adjusting it until we get the consistency we like.

That’s one of the nice things about making meals like this at home. You can make it your own. There is one part of the directions that we don’t mess around with, though: the noodle cooking time.

I absolutely hate noodles that are still half-cooked, and I don’t like them overcooked either. So when it comes to the noodles, we pay attention to the cooking time and make sure they’re just right. Once we’ve got the noodles cooked and the sauce at the consistency we like, we’re ready to eat.

I’m sure your asking if we would we would purchase the Double Cheeseburger Macaroni Hamburger Helper again. Absolutely. Even though David and Charlie still prefer the original Cheeseburger Macaroni.

I really enjoyed the Double Cheeseburger Macaroni. Gerald loved it, and the fact that we were able to stretch three boxes into several days of meals makes it a winner in my book. I also love that it gave us another inexpensive meal option to keep in our pantry.

At 99 cents a box, this was an especially great WinCo find. Even at the $1.39 price I saw when I went back, I still think it’s a good option when you’re looking for a quick, inexpensive family meal.

Three boxes made a surprisingly large amount of food for our family, and we were still eating leftovers several days later. That’s a win for me. Before you come at me with its not healthy that may be true but sometimes its okay to splurge and use it when your in a hurry and other times you can make Homemade Cheeseburger Maccaroni which we do most of the time.

Our family verdict: The Double Cheeseburger Macaroni is definitely something we’ll be buying and making again. It may not completely replace the original Cheeseburger Macaroni for everyone in our house, but it earned a spot in our meal rotation—and that’s saying something when a meal lasts us four days!

Prices mentioned in this post are the prices I personally paid or saw at WinCo and may vary by store and date.

Now, I have a question for you. Does your family eat Hamburger Helper and if you do do you have a favorite flavor?
